The Hawks are going to end up with Marvin Williams. I can feel it. He's gonna be a bust. He couldn't start for UNC over some other people in this draft, how is he going to start for an NBA team?

He didn't start for UNC because Roy Williams kept him hidden on the bench...out of fear he would leave early. Duke kept Maggette on the bench during his freshman season as well.

I didn't see much from Bogut either...dunno if he's worth the #1, but then again, who in this draft is head and shoulders better than anyone else (serious question)?
Maybe the Stoudamire guy from Arizona?

Considering how Maggette turned out for Orlando, I don't feel much better.

And Portland dealt their pick to Utah...

He played a whopping ONE season in Orlando, on a team with no talent and helped to lead them to a 41-41 record. He is now a 20 ppg scorer. Pretty darn good.

He didn't play very well or very much as a rookie in Orlando. Then they traded him for nothing. I can easily see the Hawks fumble Williams the same way if he does show some talent.
Besides, both of our forward spots are filled, with Harrington and Smith. Chris Paul or Andrew Bogut would be far better fit for us.

Orlando's loss...one year should not make a career, especially when drafting high schoolers or underclassmen.
I agree that Paul and Bogut would be better fits. O

Yeah, but if you stick with them you might get stuck with Kwame Brown. There's almost no winning with 18-19 year olds that don't show immediate returns. Even the ones that pan out usually don't do it for their drafting teams.

It is an interesting balance. You have to show talent early, but you are up against the learning curve...teams need to win, but they take raw talent over more proven commodities.

Teams looking to win it all aren't worried about rookies. The four teams in the conference finals had one rookie among them. In the free agency era, you're better off taking more proven players and letting someone else develop the raw talent.

I like the Bogut = Brad Miller comparison.
Hopefully he will help to raise the profile of basketball down here. |

My initial point, to which you responded, was about the balance, specifically in regard to Maggette, discussed earlier in the thread. It wasn't as if Orlando was a playoff team the year before (not that I recall, anyway).

Nobody has become a playoff team by drafting HS players. Better to draft college kids and sign the HS players after the Clippers are through with them.
