I would be super interested to know about any postseason bonuses that Jessica Shepard and Marina Mabrey have in their Italian contracts that would have made it more or less profitable to win or lose today. |
I wonder if any of them just have hard end-date get-outs in their contracts. Surely you don't drag the team to the Finals and then go "nope, I'm done, see ya"? |

Onyenwere apparently leaving Avenida to head back to the US for camp, right after the Spanish semis but before the Finals. And that from a player with only two Years of Service, so not subject to Prioritization rules. Interesting to see. |

I know that Spain was making some qualification tweaks, but I am not sure if Avenida clinches a EuroLeague regular season spot if they do not win this series. |

From a Spanish newspaper article about Onyyenwere's status.
The WNBA rules are already beginning to affect European basketball, and what has happened in Salamanca is a clear example of the effect of the new rules in the American league.
Michaela Onyenwere played her last game of the Endesa Women's League season in the playoff semifinals against Barça CBS.
The American has to leave PerfumerÃas Avenida to join Phoenix Mercury and participate in the WNBA training camp.
This regulation of the United States competition means that the players have to be together with their franchises to prepare for the season.
The training camp begins on April 30, the preseason on May 5 and the season on May 19, being the key dates in the WNBA next month.
Onyenwere's case, despite having a training camp contract but for the season, has a lot of competition. They currently have 19 players on the Phoenix roster and Michaela will want to secure a spot on the team.
Onyewere also does not have a guaranteed contract with the Mercury and has not played with the team since being traded during free agency. So she has to convince Phoenix to get into the final roster.

Yeah, unfortunately a lot of that is nonsense (with some allowances for loss in translation). Onyenwere's situation is exactly the same as it would've been last season, under the old rules. She only has two Years of Service, so isn't affected by Prioritization rules. Also, Phoenix's roster is hideously thin, so she's making this team.
All this when she's leaving a team that has another North American - who is subject to Prioritization fines - who's sticking around for their Finals. |

Well 3% means more when you're on the max. Carleton's only being fined $910 a day; Mabrey's over 2 grand. That said, I have heard talk that in certain cases European teams have agreed to pay the Prioritization fines in order to get their WNBA players to stick around. |

Carleton injured her back in the past game for Avenida(Only played 8 minutes). She was treated by the doctor and trainers, stayed at the bench but stood all game.
Now this.....Bridget Carleton has not trained with the team due to a lower back problem and her participation in the final will depend on the evolution in the next few hours.

World of Basketball:

In something that does not really fit into any category, one of the funny stories of non-FIBA sanctioned basketball has been the Southeast Asian Games. Cambodia naturalized nearly a whole lineup of relatively known players since they were hosting, but still came away without any medals after basically giving up on 3x3 after the Truong twins led Vietnam past them in the semifinals and then could only manage one win in 5x5. |

France:

Where is Gabby Williams? is not the game that I thought that I would play this morning. If I was FFBB, I might insinuate that I would magically misplace Victor Wembanyama's Letter of Clearance until after the Summer League if the NBA does not tell the WNBA to handle the situation in a way that does not embarrass the LFB.
Other recent tidbits:
Clubs from Russia and Belarus are not going to be able to participate in next season's FIBA Europe competitions.
Israel is changing their rules so that one of the three import slots can only be filled by a European player.
Sopron is very unhappy with the arbitration decision surrounding their termination of Brittney Sykes's contract so they posted the entire ruling themselves:
