35-33 Serbia over China at the half in quarterfinal #1. Good matchup between the experience of Serbia vs. talented young China. Serbia has had trouble matching up with China's 6'7 and 6'9" centers, but China's 3-point shooting has not been as sharp as it was in group play. |
Is this game streaming video somewhere?

Serbia advances, 77-70. They erased the deficit in part by overplaying the passing lanes and exposing China's ballhandling. 20+ turnovers for China in the game.
Best move of the game was Serbia's coach pulling Yvonne Anderson in the 4th quarter and keeping her on the bench. Anderson had been a big part of Serbia's 2 wins in group play, but today she was awful on both ends. But she'll have another chance to play in the semis.

Serbia with 10 fewer turnovers and two more rebounds. That helps them get 17 more shots, resulting in 8 more baskets.

72-72 with 5:36 left in the 4th. Japan's defense turning up the pressure in the final quarter.

Holy shit, this game. Each team neck and neck. Machida absolutely popping off. Japan advances 86-85.

Phenomenal ball game. Can understand why most people in the US would've missed it considering the time, but that's worth seeking out the replay. Two teams who could both easily have won a medal. |

Now that was a game. Japan hit a late 3 for a 1 point lead, then Belgium's Kim Mestdagh missed a short open jumper at the buzzer that would have won it. She finished with 24 points.

Halftime France 36, Spain 30. It looked like France was going to run away with it after building a 14 point second quarter lead, but Spain rallied behind Ndour to get close.
Pretty good announcer for this game. Names like "Vukosavljevic" just roll off his tongue.

France claims the last spot in the semis, 67-64. Gabby Williams hit 3 of 4 FT and came up with a couple of big defensive plays down the stretch, but I thought the play of the game was a basket by Marine Johannes with 23 seconds left. She hit an off-balance runner that appeared to leave her hand just after the shot clock expired. Apparently FIBA does not provide for replay review in that situation, and the shot counted.

Interesting - I was watching without commentary and they kept showing the replay in slow motion which I assumed meant they thought it was good even though it looked just late. Hell of a shot though.

Johannes got that shot off. It was incredibly close, but one of the cool things I get on EuroSport's online Olympic coverage is you can slow down or speed up recorded programs, which helps a lot for checking stuff like that. I believe it is one of the things they review, and I presume they did it during the timeout that followed (even though they never showed that on camera).

Johannes should have your screenshot framed. She'll probably never make a bigger shot in her life.

Halftime in the second semifinal: Japan 41, France 34. Japan seems intent on showing that their first round 4-point victory over France was no fluke. They dug a first quarter hole for themselves with turnovers, but reversed that in the second by fast-breaking at every opportunity. When it wasn't there, they went into a 5-out set that spread the floor and allowed them to use their quickness to beat the French to the rim, scoring or kicking it out for open threes if the French collapsed. Defensively they've been able to keep the bigger French interior players just outside of their comfort zone, where they've been missing a lot of shots. Star for the Japanese so far is 5'4" point guard Rui Machida, who ran the offense beautifully in the second quarter.

Japan the team of the tournament for me. So much fun to watch. They had a relatively off shooting night against the US in groups, will be very interesting to see the rematch, although I do still expect the US to win.

Final Japan 87, France 71. Japan ran away with it in the third quarter, and France didn't even cut the lead to under 20 until Machida was benched with about 7 minutes to play. Japan gained experience against the US with a loss in group play, and will be a tough out in the gold medal game.

Yup, Japan is the most fun to watch for this old fart- MOVEMENT. And then, MORE movement.
I wonder what the spread/line is for the gold medal game.

Damned shame about Japan's bad luck: I'd have given them a puncher's chance at the upset, if there were going to be fans in the arena.

Awesome! I'm so happy for Gabby! Btw, does anyone remember if she's suspended for the whole W season or will she join LA this year?
