WHEELING, W.Va. (July 9) – Wheeling University has named Duquesne University Associate Head Coach Matt Schmidt as the 12th Head Women's Basketball Coach in program history. |
I will be trying as best I can to follow this program. My grandson signed a NLI with Wheeling in football and will start Aug. 10 so I'm a new Cardinals fan. I will even get to attend his games and sit in the VIP section with his parents!

What does the Director of Basketball Operations do? That seems like a big title for what what I assume is a person who does not actually hire or fire or give direction. Do they also do the same for other sports at the college?

Each school uses the job different so its difficult to pin point. Travel (Hotels, Flights, Transportation), Food/Meals, Scheduling, Academics, Housing, Admissions, Equipment, Budget, etc. It can be a catch all for everyone besides recruiting, coaching, scouting as the coaches do. Some take on video duties depending on staff, some do scouting. Definitely a liaison between other departments within athletics.
Other sports are adding operations folks, Power 5 will even have Football, Volleyball, Baseball, Lacrosse, Wrestling, Ice Hockey. It depends on their budgets and how they utilize their hires I suppose.

Kelly Rae Finley has been named interim head coach and will fill that role for the 2021-22 season, Athletic Director Scott Stricklin announced. Stricklin said UF plans to name a permanent women's basketball head coach following the 2021-22 season. |

Interesting. Does anybody have any insight into what might be behind this?

Who knows? Florida has been a sink for awhile now, Gainesville even more so. I'd want out too.(ducking and running)

We weren't getting an "out of the park" hire, but this duo eclipses the loss of Davis imo. Excited to see their work with the young guards come November.
