according to Bob Allen on local channel 13 ABC. He said the Comets are ceasing operations altogether.

I seen that too. This doesn't look good for the WNBA in the long run. A team that once captured four straight titles is now dead. Wow.

You can still buy Comets season tickets on their website...

They just added a website add to their site today, too. Weird.

It's sad to lose the Comets, but it was also sad to lose the Fire, Sol...
When the Comets won the first four titles, many people said that didn't look good for the league in the long run.
I think the biggest problem the WNBA faces is this economy.
The next couple years will be tough for our league - (I still can't believe that the Fever are still around.)

I never thought I'd see this. This would be like the NFL folding the Packers.
Where are all the buyers who are supposedly clamoring to invest in a WNBA franchise?
OK, I know the league actually makes money when they sell new franchises... which is why they might work harder for that than to prop up an old one... but... the Comets? WTF?

I am dearly sorry to all the true Comet fans.
While understanding your pain, please do what you can to continue to support the league in these early stages and growing pains.
Unfortunately, what is the demise of a franchise shall help further improve the quality of play on the court next season as spots will be squeezed from the lesser talent.
With continued progress athletically, in terms of skill, and in terms of marketing, I only hope that one day the league can find a home in Houston again.

*Revision, Split the team between Atlanta and Washington. And I know it's not going to happen, but it just seems like it'd turn out better than just having a dispersal draft.
I know it's against the rules but I think this would be best for the teams (Washington, ATL and the Comets), the league and PR.

I feel a little sick inside. A team with so much history no longer a part of the league.

Wow, this is, indeed, very sad news.
My thoughts go out to the Comets fans, players, former players and all who cared about the franchise...it's a tough thing to lose any team, but especially one with such history, as others here have noted.
I'm very concerned about the economy's effect on the W. I'm just hoping the remaining teams can weather the storm, and the league will continue to survive until we can turn the corner on this. |
I've had a season ticket for the Fever since 2004 - (I didn't even live in Indiana until 2005)
This year, there's no way I can come up with the balance by the deadline (Jan 15th)
If a die hard fan like me might not be able to do it this year, that's a bad sign.

Very true...we're all in it together, and if the fans are struggling, the W will struggle as a result, for lack of ticket sales. One good thing is that it's still far more affordable in terms of ticket prices than most other professional sports, but affordable is a relative term, considering the current state of affairs.
Hope you will still be able to come to some of the games this year!

i am wearing red and black in mourning tomorrow.
i am really disappointed in the league and the houston business community for allowing the situation to get to this point.
