I seen that too. This doesn't look good for the WNBA in the long run. A team that once captured four straight titles is now dead. Wow.

I think it's sad that you're joking. Especially as a former Comets fan. But to each his own.

It's sad to lose the Comets, but it was also sad to lose the Fire, Sol...

When the Comets won the first four titles, many people said that didn't look good for the league in the long run.

I think the biggest problem the WNBA faces is this economy.

The next couple years will be tough for our league - (I still can't believe that the Fever are still around.)

I never thought I'd see this. This would be like the NFL folding the Packers.

Where are all the buyers who are supposedly clamoring to invest in a WNBA franchise?

OK, I know the league actually makes money when they sell new franchises... which is why they might work harder for that than to prop up an old one... but... the Comets? WTF?

I am dearly sorry to all the true Comet fans.

While understanding your pain, please do what you can to continue to support the league in these early stages and growing pains.

Unfortunately, what is the demise of a franchise shall help further improve the quality of play on the court next season as spots will be squeezed from the lesser talent.

With continued progress athletically, in terms of skill, and in terms of marketing, I only hope that one day the league can find a home in Houston again.

*Revision, Split the team between Atlanta and Washington. And I know it's not going to happen, but it just seems like it'd turn out better than just having a dispersal draft.

I know it's against the rules but I think this would be best for the teams (Washington, ATL and the Comets), the league and PR.

If that were to happen- split the team between ATL and DC.... we want Tina in DC! Surprised)

Seriously- I can't believe no one stepped up to buy the team... I'll miss the Comets....

Wow, this is, indeed, very sad news. Sad

My thoughts go out to the Comets fans, players, former players and all who cared about the franchise...it's a tough thing to lose any team, but especially one with such history, as others here have noted.

I'm very concerned about the economy's effect on the W. I'm just hoping the remaining teams can weather the storm, and the league will continue to survive until we can turn the corner on this.

I've had a season ticket for the Fever since 2004 - (I didn't even live in Indiana until 2005)

This year, there's no way I can come up with the balance by the deadline (Jan 15th)
If a die hard fan like me might not be able to do it this year, that's a bad sign.

Very true...we're all in it together, and if the fans are struggling, the W will struggle as a result, for lack of ticket sales. One good thing is that it's still far more affordable in terms of ticket prices than most other professional sports, but affordable is a relative term, considering the current state of affairs.

Hope you will still be able to come to some of the games this year!

This is so so very sad. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

For years, the Comets represented the ideal of what other teams aspired to be. Coop, SS, TT...some of the most amazing players to ever put on a uniform. Kim Perrot... The championships...

No longer. No Comets.

What terrible terrible news.

Terrible news.

Although I don't think it means the WNBA is doomed, I think most of us sort of saw this coming. Yes, the comets were the best, but they never replaced their talent, never did much else, lost support from management..and at this time, people can't afford to privately buy a team.

My sympathies to the Houston fans, staff, and players. And to the league, for the loss of such a storied franchise.

ESPN says the dispersal draft will be next week. Wow, that is fast...

The only alternative theory I have is that the people interested in bringing a team to Houston are people who have no interest in picking up the baggage left with the current Houston franchise, and find a way to start anew - perhaps in a better economical climate, and a fresh face to the franchise.

I mean, at this point, the Comets franchise is marred with disgruntled fans, messy leadership, uninspired personnel choices, and the indecision of Tina Thompson.

Perhaps the league would prefer to disband the Comets and bring a team back to Houston with a fresh feeling, a clean slate, a better economy, and none of the bad feelings left with the previous regime.

I don't know if what I just said is reasonable, but it was a thought.

I can't believe what I just read. How could the Houston Comets be no more. This is a very sad day in the WNBA, Women's basketball and sports in general. Even though the Comet's have somewhat struggles the past few seasons they helped the WNBA become what it is today.

I wish the best to all the Comets fans, players, coaching and support staff and office staff.

it sucks for the fans -- and for fans of history -- but it IS part of the reality of professional leagues. Just ask about the Minnesota Lakers...

Right now, Donna has got to get a wake up call about how teams market, how they treat their subscribers and how they use the internet.

Unfortunately, she's not much of a listener.

I'm not surprised by this news. The Comets were in a tenuous situation before the season ended, but when Ike came through it was the last hard blow.

She's extremely optimistic, which is good in many ways..but it's almost to a fault. She likes to pretend everything is all wonderful.

She does really need a good marketing team.

Nothing on wnba.com, nothing on the Comets website.

Maybe Orender just found out about the same time that we did.

Yeah. I just figured that she immediately released the news after she found out for herself that whatever deal was planned (if there was one) wasn't going through.

this is not right. This is beyond not right. Worse than the Fire, worse than the Sol, worse than the Rockers, worse than the Sting. This isn't just a team being dispersed and a franchise ceasing operations. This is a piece of the league's history that's being ripped out of all of our hearts. This is a team of legend we're talking about here. Coop, Swoopes, and Tina T. Arcain. Tammy Jackson. Kim Perrot, rest her soul.

The league dropped the ball on this one. Dropped it right down the Grand Canyon. Are things really bad enough that the league couldn't step in and directly run the team for a year until they found a buyer? Because you do NOT let the goddamn Houston Comets fold, and you certainly don't let people find out about it on message boards second hand from the Houston local news.

Comet fans, I feel so, so bad for you right now. Having a WNBA without the Comets just feels wrong to this old-school Libkid. You guys were our worst nightmare, but we wouldn't have been the same team without you.

I agree with you completely, as a Sparks fan I looked forward to the Comets game on the schedule because I knew it was going to be a tough game, at the time the Comets were the class of the league. Without the Houston Comets (along with the Sacramento Monarchs) the Sparks wouldn't have been as pushed as they were in the early 2000s to rise their level of play to be successful. The first game I ever saw was the Houston Comets vs the LA Sparks, it was the day after Kim Perrot passed away. It was a very sad day because of that unfortunate event, but it was still one of the days I will always remember because the Sparks were finally making a name for themselves as a force to be reckon with and the Comets were at 2-time defending champions.

I still can't believe this has happened...the history of the WNBA runs through Houston and will always begin with the 1997 Houston Comets being lead by Cynthia Cooper, Sheryl Swoopes, Tina Thompson, Kim Perrot and Janeth Arcain to the 1997 WNBA Championship

Sad

Amen, sister.

Donna, you've lost points in my book.

That's the part that really disgusts me. The league ran the Sting for two full seasons until an owner was found. Alas, those were different times and we had a different league president...

You're being nice. Orender lost the book IMO. What happened to all those places she was so goddamn cheerful about? Where were they?

Do you think if Val was still president the Comets would be league run in 2009?

When did the league run the Sting?
