When I went on a Limewire binge, I picked up some great acapella covers, all credited to Rockapella, although I'm not sure if all of themare by the group. Their version of "Eye of the Tiger" is a hoot, as is "Fat Bottomed Girls". "Save Tonight" is pretty good, and you haven't lived until you've heard four voices and a percussion instrument try to interpret Beethoven's Fifth.

Funny that nobody has mentioned maybe the two greatest covers ever:
Marvin Gaye's version of Gladys Knight's "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" and Aretha Franklin's version of Otis Redding's "Respect".

That's the sign of a really good cover - when you don't rememeber it's a cover!
Koronos Quartet (I think that's the name) did string quartet versions of a few Metallica songs - brilliant!

Not as well known as some of the others mentioned, but sax player Jamie Williams did a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Overjoyed" on his album which features Jennifer Hudson that I really enjoy.
Also, Hidden Beach Recordings "Unwrapped" series does excellent jazz versions of some of today's popular songs, although I'm not sure if those can really count as covers. Enjoyable nonetheless.

There's a rather good cover (almost a spoken version!) of it produced by Richard X, with some British singer with an upper class accent doing it (Deborah Strickland?). A bit off-beat, but also surprisingly emotionally affecting.

The Slits did a good cover of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine". It definitely qualifies as a "different" interpretation. |

Diana Krall's cover of "A Case of You"- - stunningly beautiful (much like Diana Krall herself!)
Dar Williams and Ani Di Franco's cover of "Comfortably Numb"- - amazing!

I love, love, love the "Wonderwall" cover done by Ryan Adams of the Oasis song.
Also love Marie J. Blige's version of the Stevie Wonder song, "Overjoyed."

cake doing gloria gaynor's "i will survive."
phish doing "good times, bad times" (or really anything else -- they were the best cover band ever).
scissor sisters doing "comfortably numb"... not really "good," but hilarious.

Don't laugh. This is a really good tribute album to Human League, whose songs are much better than given crdit for.
The best are Baxendale's version of "Keep Feeling (Fascination)" and and Stephen Merritt's Future Bible Heroes doing "Don't You Want Me Baby?" Merritt is, as usual, genius. |
That version of 'Human' by 'The 6ths with Lloyd Cole is awful!' The classic song produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis (the greatest production team of all-time) SHOULD NOT be touched!

I recently discovered Cherrelle's "I didn't mean to turn you on." I grew up hearing the Robert Palmer version, which I still love. But I love Cherrelle's original, too. I didn't even know it existed, and I'm usually very knowledgeable about music.

I loved Cherrelle and that was one of my faves of hers. I didn't like Palmer's cover.

She's the bomb. "Saturday Love" is a classic.
