Alley-ooping this over from its own thread, because CDRS and AFO are more likely to see it here: while most of her W career was with the Shock, she's also a Utah alumna and this seems like a job for the alumni association.

Aces waive Emma Cannon and sign Joyner Holmes.

I mean....well really, is that the best they could do? Cannon actually showed some usefulness to them last year. Holmes has shown [blank]...except perhaps what Queenie alludes to. Maybe she is somebody's gf. Otherwise it's really really weird. Even then, it's pretty weird. Maybe someone looked at tape of her Freshman year in college.

I mean. She did remind us of Kara Braxton for stretches in that opening game, and Bill *did* wrangle Kara Braxton into some semblance of usefulness. It's just that the ways she reminded us of Kara Braxton were... um... maybe not conducive to successful basketball play. |
At the risk of objectifying the athletes, I am not opposed to more WNBA players reminding me of Kara Braxton...

It's not like Cannon's great. She's a fairly ordinary, 6ft center. They're taking a look at someone else, which makes sense. It's basically an early version of when teams cycle through different players on 7-day deals. |

yeah, but if you're looking for a diamond in the rough, maybe excavate someplace that hasn't already been mined...Just sayin'...I'm thinking about how Atlanta came up with Bradford - not a star, but definitely useful to them. I might be looking for a player who has been performing well in Europe for a few years and give them a look. I'd especially prefer to get a player who at least has some emphasis on staying in playing shape.

Cannon played well overseas, and she’s a vegan.

That is absolutely not true. In fact, quite the opposite.

Joyner Holmes is a player that has frustrated me. She has a ton of potential. I remember watching her as Freshman at Texas and thinking she was going to be phenomenal player in the W someday. After her offcourt issues at the beginning of her sophomore year she seemed to never develop. MoJeff is another player, but hers is more due too injuries beyond her control. I think she would be the third or best point guard in the league if her injuries hadn’t set her back so much.

exactly. And for me I always think effort is important. She's always looked like she's just coasting along because she has/had talent without putting in the work to get better. She clearly never made an effort to get physically in shape. I'd rather have someone on my team who works their ass off even if they don't have as much innate ability. For instance, Dearica Hamby...

So how did Vegas get her? Was she traded? Was she waived?😳

Not sure how Aces signed her without waiting 48 hrs - but, regardless she has another gig. |
If it's anything like the men's league, that forty-eight hour period is required before the player gets to decide what team she ends up on. After the mandatory waiting period, the player becomes an unrestricted free agent, and can sign with whomever they want. Prior to the end of the forty-eight hour waiting period, any team with cap space (other than the team that waived them) can claim the player off waivers. If more than one team puts in a waiver claim, priority is determined in reverse order, according to winning percentage.
Based on the facts that (1) the Aces have the second-best winning percentage in the league, and (2) the Liberty would not be allowed to re-sign her until after she cleared waivers, this suggests that either the Aces were the only team to put in a waiver claim for Stokes, or that the only other team to do so was the Storm.
