Games are being called off left and right. Can we get all the countries to national team games in two weeks? |
I don't know exactly what the different rules are in every country but it's surely looking unlikely that everyone is going to be able to meet up and then travel into opposing countries and be cleared to play (and then be cleared to get back out and go back to their club teams). Half of Europe's back in lockdown or heading that way. |

I check each of the China reports to see what Han is doing. It looks like she had another big game: 28 points, 11 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 steals. Then I noticed that the opposing center scored 30 points. She played 7 more minutes than Han, but she also shot a super-efficient 13-16 81.2% from the field. So, who is this Dirana Dirichati? She is 23 years old and listed at 6-4, 187 lbs. There are other versions of her name: Dilana and Nana for her first name; Dilichati, Dilixiati, and Dilishati for her last name. What's obvious when you see Dilixiati is that she doesn’t look like the other Chinese. As I suspected, Dilana was born in Xinjiang, which probably means she is a member of the Muslim minority, Uygur ethnic group. That made me wonder if she’s been held back somewhat because of her ethnicity. Or maybe the other National Team post players are just better – China seems to have a boatload of players 6-4 or taller. I found a video where Dilana discussed playing 3x3 basketball, which I assume was for the national team. So, maybe that’s why she has a lower profile. Anyone know anything more about Dilixiati?

In terms of basketball - things are just crazy all over Europe. National Federations cannot make logical statements. FIBA does not help also. No secure bubbles exist for players to assemble, yet alone play international basketball.
To avoid problems for players in the EU leagues, they cannot play any match outside the EU. If they do that they could find themselves having to go into quarantine when they return .

And of course, as we are well aware here in the UK, not every country that participates in FIBA Europe competitions is in the EU.
Some of these games are surely going to get postponed - the only question is whether they're all going to get postponed. |

Players who are supposed to join national teams are getting regular PCR tests right now. Zaragoza got a positive test and had their game abandoned immediately at halftime.
Of course, if it is not possible to actually play continental championships next summer, then there is no need to play qualifiers anytime soon. This happening in Europe is a disaster for FIBA though since presumably the women's bubbles were going to be a test run for the men's bubbles that are scheduled to happen around the world a few weeks later.

I had mentioned her as a sleeper pick for her draft year when she was playing solidly for her club. I am going with the direct Pinyin transliteration of Dilana Dilixiati this season although there are different romanization methods in play for Uighur basketball players. There are a few Uighurs on the men's national team so I do not think that is an issue. The national team does tend to settle on favorites early though and does not integrate new players as well as they should even though they elevate their preferred youngsters.
She had a pretty good last season playing the 4 alongside Li, which was what allowed them to have Powers at their foreigner spot and win matchups.
Now that more of Guangdong's talented players have abandoned ship, she is having to take on a bigger role and has had a few solid games. She is not as effective in the post as Li, not as skilled or stretch capable as Sun, and not as tall with defensive upside as Han, and probably not as good at rebounding as Chen in limited minutes, which leaves her kind of without a role at the national team level. She does play 3x3, but she was not one of the players that China's federation removed from club play to exclusively train for the Olympics last season. Club teams are playing 3x3 alongside 5x5 this season, but I am not sure if stats exist for those games. |

Thanks for these. I rarely make it through all the tedious waffling legalese, but the base numbers near the start are always interesting. |

Do teams actually pay up after arbitration makes an award?

The teams that do not end up on this list, where they are supposed to be stopped from signing players that require FIBA paperwork:
http://www.fiba.basketball/bat/sanctions
Some teams on the list have ceased to exist though and in quite a few cases a team in the exact same location with suspiciously similar names and somehow the same people in charge pop up right afterwards. FIBA only has so much power if the national federation does not get involved.
Erlana Larkins is on the player portion of that sanctions list because she had signed for Olympiacos the season before her last WNBA season and no-showed, alleging injury. Olympiacos sued her and her agent, claiming that neither took adequate steps to explain the situation to them and made it hard for them to find a replacement because they did not know if she would play. The arbitrator in general sided with the team although they reduced the amount from what was asked for, which was the entire value of the contract that they were going to pay her. Presumably the agent paid up because she has a lot of other clients, but Larkins did not and basically ended her own career as a result. |

I wonder if Ogunbowale and Musina have good chemistry. Maybe Musina would be a good pickup for Dallas.
