It is remarkably interesting comparing the different countries approach to COVID reporting etc. Unlike the WNBA in which all the teams were locked down in one place "the bubble", here in Europe it is life as normal. Players train, go home, and travel to matches. All the players and team teams hope that everybody is respecting protocol etc. Yet what you see on social media does not inspire confidence)
In addition, not all players are full time professionals even in the top divisions (some players are still in school, while other are in higher educational studies, some players are even working on their after-basketball careers).
Covid testing cost money especially if you want the results immediately and this is the problem, it can take anything between 24 hours to 72 hours to get the results back. Tested on Monday, result back Thursday and +ve will lead to a game postponement because the player may have infected her team-mates during training during the weeks.
What is worse, the player who tested +ve on the Monday and played during the weekend may have also infected players on the opposing team.
This is the biggest issue for women’s professional sport in Europe right now (not just basketball). To test and not to test because if they are unable to play the games within the allocated window; they will forfeit game (reading all the small prints of the various leagues) because this season must end on time.
On top of all the domestic action – the EuroLeague Women and the EuroCup is going to happen which basically means NO domestic basketball possible during the regular season hubs for the leagues that are providing the bulk of the teams.
What people needs to understand – playing basketball or any professional sport is that the players HAVE to take care of themselves, they are no bubbles like you have seen for the WNBA or NBA for domestic leagues, no sports league can afford it;

They are both listed on the roster (along with Stewart):

The teams carrying more foreigners than allowed for domestic league play cannot be thrilled right now. |
With this 'pod' system that they've gone to for ELW, I wonder if we see teams bring ringers in for just those weeks. Travel and quarantine rules might make it tricky, but if they can get round that it could be a way for stars to make some cash without spending the whole season overseas, and teams to boost their talent for big games without paying those players all year long. |

Havent seen Bella Alarie in the box score for Galatsaray in the past 2 games. She played the first 4 games. She signed back in July so I dont think she was a temp fill in player. Did she get hurt? Cut? Havent seen a press release either.
Thanks if you know.

After Bria Hartley got injured, Galatasaray had a big hole at guard. Rather than signing the best European that would fit (I was thinking that it would be a good spot for Ionescu), they signed Courtney Williams. I though originally that meant that somebody was getting European citizenship or Alarie was eligible for it something. It turns out that they just needed a guard that badly and were going to rotate between Alarie and Mercedes Russell for the other non-European spot. Since Russell did not arrive until later, these are the games where they are giving her a chance so they can figure out what lineup they want to use in the big game. I do not know if they really will carry all three all season long or if there will be a change later. |

Just saw this a few minutes ago.
In case you cant translate from Turkish to English it says.
US center Isabella Alarie, who joined our team earlier this season, informed our club about her decision to return to the United States due to her family situations. As a result of this decision, our contract with her was mutually terminated.
We would like to thank Isabella Alarie, who contributed to our team at the start of the season with her professional personality and teamwork during her time under our jersey, and wish her success for the rest of her career.
