The Brooklyn Nets star is committing $1.5 million to supplement the income of players who choose not to play this season, whether because of coronavirus concerns or social justice reasons. |

Why is this wonderful gesture being called "bizarre"?

Irving has gone on record about this commitment to social justice. If I wanted to put $1.5 million toward something to improve social justice, paying the salaries of elite athletes would be about No. 3,201 on my list of ways I could make an impact.
Hell, pay the salary of grocery workers who are afraid to go to work for health reasons if you want to pay someone's salary.
Why in the world would this be considered "wonderful"?

NBA players have been paying salaries for arena workers and such. I believe Kyrie is close to quite a few WNBA players. Good of him.

Montgomery and Cloud should be included in this. They were among the first to opt out for social justice work and unlike Maya Moore probably doesn't have the other income sources. EDD is getting paid anyway, and is also doing commercials now too.

Theoretically even someone like Ashley Walker or Kaela Davis or Shao Ting could apply

Isn't Cambage already getting paid as a "protected player"?
The players listed above actually opted-out.

Durr and Cambage are both already getting their money from the league/team. It depends on who you count - are the players like Vadeeva and Park who agreed not to come early on 'opt-outs'? Does Cloud get more money when Converse already said they'd pay her salary? - but I get to about $1m total from the ones I felt were reasonably included. If you include all the early opt-out/suspended players you might get to around the 1.5. |

From that ESPN article...
Quote: |
The funds will come from the KAI Empowerment Initiative that Irving launched Monday. It will also provide players with a financial literacy program created by UBS... |
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought all or nearly all WNBA players go through a financial literacy program that the league or one of its sponsors provide.
