Pilight could tell us which third rounders in the 'modern' age have made an impact. The first that comes to my mind is Kraayeveld, because I was a fan of hers when she was with the Liberty. I think she even started for a couple of seasons. So it can happen. |
It's been a while, but Jia Perkins was an All-Star.

So was Charde Houston

I'm too lazy to do the exact math, but 21 years times 12 third-round picks per year (plus a few more for when there were more teams) is around 270 or so third-rounders.
Let's be generous and say 9 had an "impact" in the league, or 1 out of 30. That's one every 2.5 years.
Let's say six were starters for a significant amount of time. That's one out of 45, or one every four years.
Again, the third-round generates publicity for the league in places it doesn't generally get any, which is a positive, but really, in terms of talent, it's not a big deal whether it continues or not. Presumably a player like Jia Perkins would have found a home in the W had she been drafted or signed as a free agent.

Houston was a 2004 USA Basketball U18 member. She dropped because Auriemma doghoused her for 4 years. Perkins got pregnant her senior year in college which I think caused her to drop.

But, without wishing to be dismissive, so what? If there were only 12 teams in the NBA, players 25-36 in the draft wouldn't make much of an impact each year either (players 25-36 often don't anyway in a 30-team league). And that's when they're drafting many of those players earlier in their maturation process, and therefore adding increased randomness. So yeah, most WNBA third-rounders won't make it at WNBA level, just like most of those NBA guys will spend most of their basketball careers in Bakersfield or Belgium. Big deal. |

I agree. The third round is pretty irrelevant in almost every way.

Kudos to the Fever for getting Allemand to come over.

Hiring a new coach who actually wanted her to come may have been the key element there, rather than talking her into anything. |

Do the Sun still have her rights and if so does it expire ? Not that I expect her to ever play for Connecticut but maybe if she wanted to play elsewhere a deal could be made in the future.

All three of these players were ranked in the top ten of their respective recruiting classes and were high school All-Americans, but, for whatever reasons, did not necessarily live up to their projected status in college based on their respective rankings.
But the raw talent and potential were there, as evidenced by their respective high school ratings and accolades.
Charde Houston (UConn) was ranked as a top five recruit by All Star Girls Report top ten recruit by Blue Star. She was a McDonald's All-American and a Parade All-American in high school. Houston was also selected to play in the WBCA High School All-American game (though she was not able to play in the game, due to prior commitments).
Lynetta Kizer was ranked in the top five by ESPN/Hoopgurlz, the top ten by Blue Star, and #17 by All Star Girls Report. She was a McDonald's All-American and a Parade All-American in high school. Kizer was also selected to play in the WBCA High School All-American game.
Krystal Thomas (Duke) was ranked in the top ten by Blue Star, ESPN/Hoopgurlz, and All Star Girls Report. She was a McDonald's All-American and Parade All-American in high school. Thomas was also selected to play in the WBCA High School All-American game.

Just pointing out that Erica Wheeler didn't even get drafted and was an All-Star and a starter since her Sophomore season. I'd say that's way more impressive than anything any of these 3rd rounders did.

Not only that - she was cut by 2 teams. She's a great success story for the WNBA. She shows the power of persistence.

Based on Duke's recent history of turning out over-achieving WNBA players, I have to say I do see Gorecki having a career in this league. The only ones who haven't really panned out have been Tricia Liston and Rebecca Greenwell. Gorecki is way more athletic than Liston, stronger than Greenwell, and more versatile, a better rebounder, passer and defender, and as good of a shooter as both. And she finished more tough shots off the dribble than just about anyone else I saw in the NCAA last year. I mean, some of that layups she made this season were insane.
All the spots are full at this point, unless Phoenix decides to pick up a 12th player. It might take her a year of playing overseas (if that's even a thing this winter) to prove herself, but to be honest, especially with people as high on Odom as they seem to be, I'm kind of surprised she hasn't gotten a look. There aren't many legit 6-foot point guards out there. If there were 2 more teams in the league she would definitely be on a roster right now.

I would definitely support the Storm picking her up again if any of our guards opt out. Duke players definitely have a knack for carving out a place (or at least a legit chance) in this League.
