I'm confused about what's happening in France. If Lyon and Montpellier are playing for the French League championship, what is this Coupe de France that Bourges just won over Flammes? Is that a runner-up tournament? A separate competition altogether? |
Recap here:
http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2019/05/french-cup-final-may-11th/
The French Cup is a knockout competition like in soccer. Teams from the top three divisions enter and play single elimination games during the season until the final this weekend, which was part of the same festivities as the cup on the men's side, two youth competitions with the same format, and two cups solely for lower division teams. |
Were Lyon and Montpellier part of the knockout tournament? It's just a coincidence that the top four teams ended up as the finalists in two different tournaments? |
Mostly a coincidence as I noted in the late arrivals thread that the league semifinals outcome was the worst in terms of keeping players. Lyon eliminated Lattes and then Bourges eliminated Lyon. Bourges and Charleville only had to win two games to reach the final since EuroLeague teams enter at the quarterfinal stage and each round has matchups selected randomly with Charleville's draw being rather easy. |
Sounds really convoluted. I'm done. Thanks.

I strongly suspect this will be over on Wednesday. Fenerbhace has been dominating Cukurova except for the one where Gray scored 41 points.

Well Turkish playoff are over. renerbhace rolled Cukurova. Gray could only put up 26. Plum, Stokes, Bone and Gray all come back.

With that, the thread is done for the season! |
As always, thanks for all the time and effort that goes into this every year. It'd be a nightmare trying to find/follow a lot of this without the work you put in. |

You're all very welcome!
I lied though and have one more quick update.
Allazia Blockton took getting waived in stride and immediately headed overseas to sign in Brazil, which is in the middle of the season:

It's not completely uncommon for players to finish college and then go overseas as soon as possible, but more unusual for players who were in WNBA camps. |

This is great data, and extremely interesting ...
Do the French women play in the same arenas as the French male pros?

Only one of the teams in the top women's league appears to also have a men's team. That would be Lyon, where the women play in a bandbox that barely fit in the finals crowd and the men's team plays in a bigger arena for around 5,600 spectators, but is moving to one that seats 10,500. Both have been known to use bigger arenas in the area for special games though.
Multi-team clubs are not as popular in France. Most of the ones that I know about involve at least one of the teams playing in a much lower division. That's why the Lyon project where they are now part-owned by a successful men's and women's soccer team is interesting. |
