This is probably the right thread for this:
Penn State fired Coquese Washington.
Pretty good job open early in silly season. |
Coquese was a player here in Cleveland on the Cleveland Rockers Team. She gave birth to her twins or triplets(can't remember which) while she was playing. I wish her the best in her future. |
Are you thinking of Helen Darling who is a Penn State alum? I know she had triplets and played for the Cleveland Rockers.

Oh yah, yabetcha!
I just hope the next hire isn't "third verse, the same or worse".
There is absolutely no winning culture around NDSU women's basketball. It's hard to say that considering how dominant the program was at the division two level and how prominent the culture is around the football team in Fargo. I suppose that there are many collegiate Athletic departments that have dominant programs in one sport that languish in other areas but NDSU isn't huge and I perhaps unrealistically expect that the Bison culture would be more pervasive. Maybe football is the problem. There are certainly other programs that do well at NDSU tho.
This will be Matt Larson's first real hire as an athletic director. Granted we hired a new football coach after Chris Kleiman left for Kansas state but that hire was an in house done deal. It will be interesting to see what direction and commitment athletics puts in this women's basketball hire. I can not honestly say that there should be could or would be a strong appeal to this program on the part of a coach. It's been decades since Bizon women's basketball was a big deal in Fargo in the Great Plains region. Very few people remember those Glory days. I think rekindling that passion would take tremendous attention and effort.
A blueprint of sorts however is available right down I 29. If people need a program to pattern after they need to look no farther than the two schools in Brookings and Vermilion. They both off for a culture to be envied and emulated. Very similar to the culture around the women's basketball program in the 70s 80s and 90s that was in place in Fargo.

It will also be interesting to note if they hire a male or female for this position. With Walseth gone, there is only ONE female head coach at NDSU (volleyball) All other women's programs (soccer, golf, cross country, track, softball) are coached by men.

If I were Penn State, with that athletic department budget, I would throw a little extra into this hire. This is a really good job opportunity for someone.
The first person I would contact, even though she won't take the job, is Gail Goestenkors. |
When are people gonna get it through their heads that Gail is DONE with college coaching? |
Joanne Boyle would actually be a good choice for Penn State. She's a Pennsylvania native. Just not sure she's all wrapped up with her adoption issue.
I want to start playing guessing games on the next HC at Penn State:
-Carol Owens (maybe we lay off ND assistants for a minute)
-Shea Ralph (you never know)
-Tonya Cardoza (this is my favorite)
-Tricia Fabbri (stretch)
-Lindsay Gottlieb (didn't Barbour love her at Cal?)
-Susie McConell-Serio (unlikely)
-Denise Dillon
-Cindy Griffin (I would talk to her)
-Stephanie Gaitley (I would talk to her)

Dawn Staley, also a Pennsylvania native, would be ideal but is probably unattainable

I can't imagine Owens at PSU since she and Coquese are very close.

Both Owens and Cunningham have been head coaches. I'm not convinced either of them is interested in doing it again. I think they are pretty content where they are, at least as long as McGraw remains as HC.
If I was PSU AD, I'd contact Mike Neighbors and Jennie Baranczyk. Personally I think Katie Meier is one of the elite candidates, but I doubt she'll leave Miami other than for her Alma Mater Duke, or for a really elite plum job. But, I suspect Penn St might be willing to significantly outbid Miami, so if money is a prime motivator, maybe she's not impossible.
I understand Arkansas is Neighbor's home, but the upside potential at PSU is probably a lot higher. So again, what motivates him?

Why? The UVA program was dead in the water under her long before she got distracted. Most fans wanted her fired before she quit.
I don't know why she would be on the list for any plum job.
And, while I thought Susie McConell-Serio was a great hire by Pitt at the time, she turned it into a gravy train for her family and left the program in even worse shape than it was when she started.

Virginia? Good second round appearance in 2018 and almost knocked off South Carolina, so the finish is what folks remember. She also has a great reputation in the business and worked under Sandy Barbour - so not out of the realm of possibilities.
But given her adoption situation I doubt she's available or interested.

In 7 years at UVA, never fewer than 11 losses (and that was year 1; never fewer than 13 thereafter) and never better than 6th place in the ACC (and some of those were pre-ND and Louisville). I expect Penn State to aim higher.

The usual last gasp effort by a coach sitting on a roaring inferno, often demanded by the AD. Hire new assistants.
It works rarely; usually just delays the inevitable.

I don't think so. There was genuine hoopla around The hiring of Walseth in BisonVille. What is the biggest reasons is that Her and her family are from the Twin Cities and connected supposedly to the powerful AAU programs in that area. Walseths predecessor was not connected with any of the Minneapolis based programs and really had left the cupboard bare. There was an expectation that it would take some time to build up the program.. Unfortunately for Walseth, her best year was her first year when she was still competing with the former coaches recruits. Allegedly, she managed to lower the bar on recruiting at North Dakota State never tapping into the Twin Cities rich base of athletes
