I've seen 1 of the movies on the list and MIGHT see a couple other ones. Otherwise, it is just not a group of movies that holds much interest for me. |

This year, there are eight "Best Picture" nominees.
I remember when there used to be a limit to just five such films nominated in that category. And it increased to as many as 10 a few years ago.

if either "roma" or "the favourite" wins, i'll be happy. for sheer entertainment high, "the favourite." what fun!
if glenn close does not win best actress for "the wife," i'll be very angry.
best supporting actress is a tough bunch to sort. really tough.

If Olivia Coleman doesn't win for Best Actress, there just might be a riot in the streets.
...and it's Regina King's time.

close or colman . . . it's tough, all right. but if you think (it's a legitimate argument to say) it's regina king's time, then it's definitely close's time and not yet colman's.
regina king, i'm sorry to say, isn't even in the discussion.
sorry.

Fair enough. I wouldn't be too upset if Close wins.

I've actually seen four of the nominated films. Usually it's 0 or 1. Apparently Green Book is the favorite.

i've seen six of the eight (not 'star is born' nor 'rhapsody'). 'the favourite' gets the edge, to me, for sheer entertainment, to say nothing of all the other good stuff, especially the cinematography (sp?). 'roma' deserves it, too, but for different reasons, so it's hard for me to choose between the two. the others i've seen simply don't measure up to those two, on any grounds. 'green book' shouldn't even be in there (coughwhiteguiltcough).

Good piece, read it earlier today. Long as fuck. And they changed the title of the article. Which is something I do on my blog BECAUSE the Times does it so often. But it seems weird in this case because of the way it looks like it's a magazine piece. Anyway. All I have to say is... yeah... sigh. On the other hand, at this point, we're lucky to be getting anything with half a brain. This year looks like it presents quite a few serious films like the kind we used to see back when independent film was pushing Hollywood's buttons._________________ Every woman who has ever been presented with a career/sex quid pro quo in the entertainment industry should come forward and simply say, “Me, too.” - jammer The New York Times 10/10/17 |

i don't think they changed the headline. the headline and text (technically, the tease) i used here came from the home page, not the page containing the story. just wanted to make that clear. i was sure "guess who's coming to dinner" would be mentioned, then i saw the writer was (probably too) young.

"Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" doesn't have the paycheck aspect the author was hung up on.
Hollywood has a loooong history of framing the root of racism as flawed individuals rather than historical systemic and structural injustices. "Green Book" is just the latest iteration.

No they changed it. I hadn’t noticed the discrepancy between the home page title and the actual article page which is usually a given. They changed the story title from when I read it earlier yesterday to what it is now. The original title, from which we can see WHY they might have changed it, was...

i blame the way the film was promoted. they had to find a way to let people know it wasn't just another one of those historical british royalty flicks. that was the setting, but it wasn't what set the film apart. there are probably a bunch of folks who wouldn't ordinarily watch a "historical british royalty flick" who dismissed this film out of hand.

What? Although I have not seen very many movies last year, but Crazy Rich Asians didn't get nominated?

Romantic comedies virtually never do.
