The inability to knock down shots was the most alarming thing IMO. Even if they are out of sync with each other, they still should be able to hit open shots.

This team will look a whole better with Bird, Taurasi, Hayes, Loyd, Stewart and Griner. I have doubts that EDD can play

That's assuming that most of them show up. Apparently they're expecting Taurasi and Griner soon, but given how many have already decided they have better things to do, it seems perfectly possible that some of those six might decide the same. |

I'm leaving Bird out due to her nose. Delle Donne is highly unlikely to play. So I'm adding in Taurasi, Griner, Hayes, Loyd & Stewart.
PG: Sims/Clarendon
SG: Hayes/Loyd/Plum
SF: Taurasi/DeShields
PF: N. Ogwumike/Stewart/Wilson
C: Griner/Charles
Last cuts: Williams, K Mitchell

Bird will show up. If anything, she plays better with a mask, and it won’t take much to play better than she did in 2014.
Bird hasn’t stuck around this long to bow out so easily. She’s trying to be untouchably historic.

If Bird plays, Clarendon is the last cut.

It would seem unusual for a player that didn't start on her WNBA team to make Team USA. But then, she seemed like a much better player last year playing for Cooper.

She's not the only non-starter vying for a spot at the moment. Sims had lost her starting spot by the end of the season, and neither Mitchell was starting for the worst team in the league.
Things like that happen when 10+ people don't show up. |

I still find it very strange that so many people are not showing up for the Worlds. This is pretty common for the mens team with their biggest stars not playing but has never happened before with the womens team. Why now? They had a compressed schedule before. With a new coach and Geno gone you would think that a lot of the younger players (Diggins, Gray J Thomas etc.) would jump at this opportunity

Some may not be showing up because of past slights (e.g. Parker) or the feeling they wouldn't have the "inside track" on making the team. Or the "been there, done that" feeling.

Parker's not even in the pool these days so she's not even a consideration. But those of us who've gone on about this have mostly talked about the likes of Diggins-Smith, C.Gray and McBride - players who haven't made it before, but who would've had a very good chance of making the team this time and staking their claim as TeamUSA fixtures for the future. Those are the ones that are most mysterious. Diggins-Smith doesn't even play overseas, so basically has 7+ months off once the Worlds are done, and yet she 'declined [an] invitation to camp' ( https://twitter.com/DougFeinberg/status/1038585756510572544 ). It just doesn't make much sense, and the lack of information about the absences is pretty ridiculous even by typical women's basketball standards. That one tweet about SDS is more than we have on most of them.
I'm not expecting Hayes to arrive either, by the way. |

I wonder if there's any club or agent pressure on Hayes to not play to allow her to stay Azeri and not go back to being American. She had been playing in Israel, where foreigners are foreigners regardless of nationality. Now's she in Poland and they might want the flexibility to sign another non-European. I assume that Polkowice will the team of interest for you with both Leedham and Fagbenle. Their Thomas-Hayes-Kaltisdou-Leedham-Fagbenle closeout lineup (with Aleksandravicius off the bench) could be an interesting one. |
