It makes a lot of sense to skip the WNBA if every season overseas is worth 10 in the US. Suppose taking summers off lessens the wear and tear on your body enough to extend your career by two years. That's the financial equivalent of 20 WNBA seasons.

How do we know she's getting 100k , shes only played 2 or 3 years in the league so she most likely is around the 40-60 K mark .

That is possible but not required by the CBA. She would have been crazy or have a terrible agent to go along with that. After all the Wings CEO said she was the best player in the World.

Thought you couldnt make the max salary unless you have at least given 4 or 5 years of service ?

No - players are only limited to the rookie scale in their first year. After that the rookie scale is the minimum, the max is the same as veteran players. Most players probably don't see anything but the rookie scale because teams don't have pay any more. If you search LFO's posts from some time ago he explained. To entice a star like Cambage to come over Dallas could offer more than the rookie contract scale. This is a section from the current CBA (page 79) which I think covers it. This section allows teams to get players to sign extensions that go beyond the 4 year deal.
(2)
An Extension of a Rookie Scale Contract may provide for Salary
in the first Season of the extended term no greater than the Maximum Player Salary
provided for in Article V, Section 8 (or, if no Maximum Player Salary is provided for in
Article V, Section 8, two thousand dollars ($2,000) above the Maximum Player Salary
for the prior Season). Annual increases and decreases in Salary shall be governed by
Section 3(c) above.

The years of a contract continue to be eaten up even when the player doesn't show up, you just don't get the years of WNBA experience. Cambage was out of contract until she signed to play this year, but her reserved rights were held by Dallas. They weren't required to pay her anything above the minimum qualifying offer, but were allowed to pay her anything up to the max. And in order to get her to show up, obviously it was going to be the max. |

I'm not sure you're interpreting this correctly. The extension can be up to max. However, the rookie contract itself is for four years (3 plus a team option) and has specified amounts for each year, depending on where you were drafted. See below. Article VIII refers to Exhibit 5, which is the actual rookie scale charts.
Quote: |
Section 4. Rookie Scale Contracts.
(a) The Rookie Scale Contract between a Team and a Draft Rookie: (i) shall be for an initial term covering three (3) Seasons and the immediately succeeding Off-Seasons; (ii) shall provide a Base Salary in each season as set forth in Article VIII of the Agreement; (iii) shall not contain Base Salary protection of any kind; (iv) may contain the amendments authorized by Sections 3(c) and 3(d) above; and (v) shall contain an Option (to be set forth in Exhibit 4 to a Standard Player Contract) that may be exercised by the Team to extend the term of the Contract for one additional twelve-month period beyond its initial term. Such Option shall be exercisable by the Team, in its sole discretion, by written notice to the player or her representative on or before the May 31 following the second Season covered by the Contract. If such Option is exercised by the Team, the terms and conditions of the Contract for the Option Year will be the same as those for the third year of the Contract, except that the Base Salary to be paid to the player for the Option Year shall be increased by an amount equal to fifteen percent (15%) of the player’s Base Salary for the second year of the Contract above the player’s Base Salary for the third year of the Contract. |
As Richyyy pointed out, once you sign a contract, the clock keeps running whether you show up or not. Cambage used up the four years on her rookie deal even though she only came over for two seasons. However, she doesn't get credit for service time, so she still needs to make up those years to qualify for free agency. Entering this season, she was essentially a Reserve Player -- albeit one with a lot of leverage who could demand a max salary.

Let us assume Liz Cambage (based on her recent statements) decides not to return to the WNBA next year.
Let us also assume that Dallas hangs on for the final playoff berth this year.
-- Chiney Ogwumike (CON) to Dallas for Dallas's 2019 first round pick (5th overall)
CT ran much better with Jones patroling the paint and her ability to step outside. Alyssa Thomas, Ogwumike, and Jones cannot play together - clogs the paint, not enough outside shooting.
Might have to throw some other pieces in or some pick swaps to make the math work, but the proposal above would be the centerpiece of the trade.

The thing is, outside of at some point needing to get cheaper - because all these young players are going to start getting paid around the same time - I don't really see the advantage for Connecticut. The main thing they'd want back would be... a reliable third post to join an interior rotation with JJones and AThomas. Unless cap constraints start forcing it on you, why give up Chiney in the hope that you find the next... Chiney. |

I'd rather come ue with a way to get Jones to Atlanta, but Dallas getting Jones for #5 and Stevens might be a start. I don't see Chiney getting traded either. Maybe Dallas could also take on a bad contract if the Sun have one.

No , Stevens is not apart of that deal . Jones for #5 and Kaela Davis maybe but not stevens.
