Don't forget all those fantastic times when she dribbles behind her back on the break, too. We'll ignore that 98% of the time she turns the ball over within the next two dribbles. |
She gets into trouble with her dribbling when she is in traffic surrounded by shorter players. At 6-feet, 4-inches, even her low dribbles can be comfortably stolen by shorter players, especially when she is being distracted by other defenders. This is a scenario that she should be sensitive to by now. Dribbling with only one defender close by is not much of a problem for her. It is only when she is in traffic that things get troublesome.
On the positive side, when she is surveying the court, she is like a super tall QB seeking primary targets downcourt. She can gun the rock with great accuracy the entire length of the court, and that is so much faster than dribbling.

One great thing about our missing triple towers over those first three games is that Brian was forced to get creative with his bench players, including games against championship contenders, Las Lynx and the Sun. Even with Candace back against another contender, the Merc, he felt fairly comfortable using his bench players as everyone seems to have bought into Brian bball.
This may play out with Brian being more liberal in employing his bench than he has in years past. If he feels comfortable enough to rest his starters more, that bodes well for the post-season if they can keep relatively fresh throughout the summer.

Why? Even with Lavender they only have 11 active players.

Adding Vadeeva also would make 12.

Sorry to see Karlie go, but thankful for her contributions. She definitely contributed to those first two wins, and could contribute to another team. I expect that unless something unexpected happens, she will not be in the Sparks' plans this year, as I expect the Sparks will use that 12th roster spot for a post player midway through the season. |

As I said in a thread somewhere around here, I don't think they had any choice but to release Samuelson (and same situation with Russell in New York). She was the player signed with a cap exception, so once they no longer qualified for that exception she has to be the player released.
Of course, there's nothing to stop them from now cutting someone like Wiese and re-signing Samuelson to a normal contract instead. |

There's nothing preventing them from just signing Samuelson. As long as Vadeeva is suspended, they're still only at 10 players.

Except, possibly (I still don't have full numbers for this season), the salary cap. Vadeeva's still counting on that as a temporary suspension. |

Vadeeva has apparently arrived in LA. Curious if she'll play tomorrow.

. . . and lo unto you, Hollywood, you are not the least among the cities of the earth, for unto you this day has come the Savior, who is Christ the Lord. You will find the Lord, all 6-feet, 4-inches of her, wrapped in Purple & Gold swaddling clothes, seated on the Sparks bench, at the right hand of Brian Agler. And her kingdom shall have no end . . .

Thing is, even with Parker, Nneka and Lavender all available, Agler's been staying small for long stretches of games with players like Carson at the 4. He seemed to have decided that he liked it, at least as an option. It'll be interesting to see if he junks it entirely now there are four genuine post options to find minutes for. |

He likes it because Essence has been hitting shots surprisingly at a high rate this season so far.

Yes, Essence's offensive game has actually been surgically enhanced, so to speak.

Also helps that she is being defended by posts who sag off her and give her room because they are scared that she drives by them

Also helps lead to having comfortably the worst rebounding percentage in the league outside of Arizona, and giving up nearly 50% field goal shooting to their opponents. |
