With roster mostly in place, Dallas Wings can afford to be selective in 2018 WNBA draft

Entering the 2018 draft, the Wings, which made the WNBA playoffs for the first time last season, aren't looking to retool the franchise. The Wings return 11 of 12 players from last year's roster and replaced Courtney Paris with Australian standout center Liz Cambage. |

While Dallas can still get a solid player at that six spot, it's unlikely to find an instant starter like 2017 Rookie of the Year Allisha Gray. |

Great post after careful consideration Lexie Brown or Canada would not be so bad of a pick , but i still stand firm in getting a back up post just in case.

Is "backup post" still "Mercedes Russell"?

The guy who wrote this article thinks they’ll hold a spot for Plaisance until she recovers instead of suspending her. I think that might rule out the Russell idea.

Seeing as though everyone is so low Russell might still end up a wing. So yes it does.

Bill Laimbeer says first pick in WNBA draft will be ‘very easy’
https://lasvegassun.com/news/2018/apr/11/bill-laimbeer-says-first-pick-in-wnba-draft-will-b/
Quote: |
Bill Laimbeer will surely be faced with some tough decisions as he attempts to lead the Las Vegas Aces to the top of the WNBA over the next few years, but what to do with the No. 1 pick in Thursday’s draft wasn’t one of them. |
Quote: |
And if another team calls him up to try and make a deal on draft night?
“They wouldn’t even bother to call,” he laughs. “They know I wouldn’t trade it.” |
Quote: |
“It gets more complicated as we also have 13, 25 and 32. That’s where the staff gets more involved. They put together [video] edits of different players and positions that we’re going to draft. |
Looks like I won’t have to call Laimbeer crazy.

Russia's Maria Vadeeva could be the steal of the WNBA draft
http://www.espn.com/wnba/story/_/id/23108287/19-year-old-russian-maria-vadeeva-steal-2018-wnba-draft (article from ESPN The Magazine)
Quote: |
General consensus says Vadeeva will be taken in the first round, but it's unclear which team will make the call. She has been one of the most mobile pieces on WNBA mock draft boards in recent months, ranked as high as No. 2 and down to No. 12, the last pick in the first round. |
Quote: |
Vadeeva's foundation is built off of her proficiency in finishing with her left hand, particularly her knack for taking defenders off the right shoulder with her back to the basket. |
Quote: |
"She's not just a player where you can see her becoming a great player," Ogwumike said. "She's a great player where you can see her becoming a very high-caliber player." |
Quote: |
"She never stops," Lange said. "Contact doesn't bother her, the physicality of the game, of the post game in particular, doesn't bother her. You could see the talent that was very raw in the early years, but she would never stop." |

WNBA Draft Preview: Can the New York Liberty find prospects who can help them make a big playoff run?
https://www.swishappeal.com/2018/4/11/17223348/new-york-liberty-offseason-wnba-draft-preview
Quote: |
The good - The Liberty had a WNBA-leading rebounding rate of 54.9 percent in the 2017 season. New York’s defense also held opponents to the lowest effective field goal percentage.
The bad - Hartley had improved statistics and Tina Charles was Tina Charles. But the offense was otherwise lagging behind the defense. They were in the bottom half for field goal percentage, three point shooting, and assists |
Quote: |
This upcoming season, the Liberty could benefit from adding another scorer to the field, one who also has wide range beyond the arc. New York has plenty of smaller guards like Prince, Hartley, and Sugar Rodgers. Perhaps a wing player is a better fit with the 10th overall pick. |

Doug Feinberg @DougFeinberg
Since I've been bombarded on Twitter over last 24 hours; I have straight from @IndianaFever that they've had no serious discussions at all about trading No. 2 pick over last month |

Just shooting threes doesn't really stretch the floor. You tend to need to actually make them. |

I imagine for next year, they see all the Red Meat Bigs who'll be available, but don't see a record setting scorer and 3 point shooter.
'Course they could just be driving up the price, for a finicky move down trade.

Can we be for sure any rookie in this draft are going to "Make" them at a higher rate than existing Vets ? Their % in college means zilch in the W , the line is further back . Id take my chances with existing vets being relied on to spread the floor more so than a rookie.

This is probably the best crop of long bomber three point shooters in a long time.

My one and only Mock Draft, as well as my short take on each player's immediate and long-term impact.
1. Las Vegas Aces - A'ja Wilson - Immediate starter in the post.
2. Indiana Fever - Kelsey Mitchell - Immediate starter at guard.
3. Chicago Sky - Azura Stevens - Potential starting PF.
4. Chicago Sky - Diamond De Shields - Potential starting SF.
5. Seattle Storm - Jordin Canada - High-level backup, future starting PG.
6. Dallas Wings - Kia Nurse - Rotation wing, potential future starting SG.
7. Washington Mystics - Gabby Williams - Rotation wing, potential future starting SF.
8. Indiana Fever - Maria Vadeeva - High risk, potentially very high reward. If she doesn't work out they will still be in position to get McCowan or Brown next year. Potential starting C.
9. Connecticut Sun - Lexie Brown - Rotation guard.
10. New York Liberty - Victoria Viviens - Rotation wing.
11. Los Angeles Sparks - Monique Billings - Bench, potential rotation post.
12. Phoenix Mercury - Ariel Atkins - Bench, potential rotation wing.
13. Las Vegas Aces - Jamie Nared - Bench, otential rotation forward.
14. Indiana Fever - Marie Gulich - Safety in case Vadeeva is a no-show. Potential rotation C.
15. Connecticut Sun - Mercedes Russell - Bench, potential rotation C.
16. Atlanta Dream - Stephanie Mavunga - Bench, potential rotation PF.
17. Minnesota Lynx - Tyler Scaife - Bench, potential rotation SG
18. Dallas Wings - Myisha Hines-Allen - Bench, potential rotation PF.
19. Washington Mystics - Loryn Goodwin - Bench, potential future rotation PG.
20. Phoenix Mercury - Shakayla Thomas - Potential bench wing.
21. Phoenix Mercury - Teana Muldrow - Potential bench forward.
22. New York Liberty - Raisa Musina - Unlikely to come over, potential future rotation PF.
23. Los Angeles Sparks - Jill Barta - Potential bench forward.
24. Minnesota Lynx - Carlie Wagner - Potential bench wing.
The rest is a crapshoot in multiple ways.
