So Vandersolot , Vaughn & Bentley should all be on their way home? |
Hungary are still in it, so Vandersloot's not done. Vaughn and Bentley were already out even before today's meaningless appearances.
Angelica Robinson's also out, a player whose agent might get some calls if teams are searching for a backup big. Although when you've reached 30 without a WNBA career, you're probably either not interested or teams have given up on you. |

First Knockout Round:
http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2017/06/eurobasket-quarterfinal-qualification-games-june-20th/
That means that there have already been some interesting eliminations from the World Championship next summer, which could lead to some intriguing players being available all of next season.
One of the tanking teams should sign Alina Iagupova to a 7 day contract and just let her do whatever she wants for a few games to spice up the entertainment factor. |

With Serbia out, I wonder if Petrovic or Dabovic will show up for half a season? Los Angeles doesn't need Dabovic, but maybe someone else?

It's interesting how ineffective all the big name mercenaries have been. We're only at the quarter-finals and Lyttle and Hollingsworth are basically all that's left of the imports.
On a separate note, man I love how the games flow under FIBA rules. I go on about this on Twitter all the time, but the NBA/WNBA game is so fractured by timeouts, adverts, reviews and everything else that it can be pretty painful to watch at times. And the games can take forever. FIBA games actually flow most of the time. It just feels like you're spending considerably more of your time watching basketball, rather than waiting for there to be some basketball to watch.
On another separate note, for anyone who doesn't know, the top five teams in this tournament who aren't Spain qualify for the Worlds next year (Spain are hosting it, so qualify automatically). So Russia et al are out after today's results, and the four winners of Thursday's quarter-finals are definitely in. Puts that extra bit of meaning on top, although knockout games in the European championships was a pretty decent amount already.
I'm kinda hoping that the likes of Palau and Dumerc might hang around for one more year, whatever may have been suggested to this point... |

Quarterfinals:

Belgium, Greece, and France join Spain and the USA next summer. The winners of Latvia-Italy and Turkey-Slovakia also will qualify.
Richyyy, I don't have a personal Twitter account so I will let you know here that Jonquel Jones has already played for the Bahamas, so barring any FIBA magic, that will be her team forever. Fenerbahce's lineup could certainly use a naturalized Turk though to help them domestically. |

Ah okay, thanks. I wasn't even sure if the Bahamas had a team, considering Sophia Young and Sancho Lyttle never even seemed to consider playing for a St Vincent team back in the day. That's a bit of a shame that she'll likely never play a meaningful minute in international basketball. |

Congrats to Latvia! I wonder if Zane Tamane will play for them?

I didn't have the opportunity to see today's games, and the highlights skipped right by it, but that sounded like a horrible foul call right at the end to help take Latvia past Italy. Awful way to lose. Italy have to be happy with the way Zandalasini's exploded so that they finally appear to have a successor to Macchi/Masciadri though. They can't play forever. |

None of the angles showed what the ref who called the foul near the scorers table saw that there was no attempt to play the ball - that overhead long distance one I guess is the best one they had.

Don't think she's playing basketball anymore at all, similarly to AJZ. Also she divorced her Egyptian husband so she went back to Teilane in the last couple of years she played. |

I think that's a horrible call. Any foul in that situation - where a team has one to give late, so they use it to stop the opponent after they've used up some time - is semi-'intentional'. The same way when you're fouling at the end of a game to extend the contest it's intentional and everyone knows it. But calling it an intentional foul with the punishment that brings in that situation is desperately harsh and not really in the spirit of that rule.

In my head, that sounded a lot like a line from Short Circuit. |

Hopefully it's less than 2 years before his next post.
More input!

You're probably right - I haven't seen nearly as much b-ball this season to have any insight how the referees are calling these situations nowadays.

Hmm, 2 years sounds about right - Latvia will host part of Eurobasket Women 2019, so I might pop-up in this thread's 2019 version |

You do realise that your ladies just qualified for the World Cup? Surely that warrants a trip to Spain next year, never mind a couple of RebKell posts... |

Meh, that's a second tier tournament with most of the field consisting of shitty non-Europe/USA/Australia teams. EBW > WC all day, every day. |

Yeah, fair point. Although unless they put it in some stupid places, from my perspective the trip to Spain is distinctly easier. |

Recap of the last day, including the less meaningful games:
http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2017/06/eurobasket-finals-june-25th/
One of the things that I learned from actually being able to watch a few games is that Mestdagh coaches Belgium in English. I guess that makes sense as a best way to not either offend Dutch speakers or French speakers. |

Ugh, don't fancy our chances next to Greece and Israel. But I guess we've got a shot.
awhom111, you have a better grasp of FIBA's rules than I do, so I have a question. I noticed the other day that Elizabeth Williams was born in the UK. Are the age group competitions she played in for Team USA meaningful enough to lock her as American in the eyes of FIBA? Or could she technically still play for Great Britain if we talked her into it? And hey, while I'm imposing on you, do you happen to know if Fagbenle counts as 'naturalised' for us or if she's officially just standard British? Thanks. |

Fagbenle played for England U16s so I think she is not considered naturalized.
We could ask her, I do not believe that Williams is a UK citizen since I believe her parents were just there for professional reasons. If she was, FIBA would allow her to switch with USA Basketball's permission like she theoretically could do to Nigeria. |

Thanks. Williams might not have the passport yet, but being born here might make it possible to get one (although not a certainty these days). Back in the buildup to the London Olympics there was a search for people who might be eligible in various sports, including basketball, but there's so much less money behind things now that it's died down.
Williams does seem right around the level of player who might be interested in the passport to make some extra money overseas, even if it meant giving up a small chance of eventually playing for Team USA. As with many of the various naturalised players around Europe, she'd instantly be our best player. |

I do wonder how long she plans on having a career with Medical School always being her long term goal. If Nigeria's basketball federation was capable of getting things together, it would be cool for her to end her career at an Olympics or a World Championship.
A naturalization as opposed to a switch between two countries you were always eligible for can be trickier for players who have already played youth national team games. I am not sure if being born there would help her argument. If she is planning on retiring early, a European passport would certainly help with the pay although she is reportedly considering China for the upcoming season. |

It'd certainly be an easier route to an Olympic Games if Nigeria put together a team for the women like they have with the men in past years (where every decent US player with a vaguely tangential Nigerian history gets pulled in). I doubt Williams is the only one who'd be eligible. A half-decent team like that is way more likely to qualify out of Africa than GB would be from Europe.
But obviously the European passport would be more useful to make money if she could get hold of one. |
