There was a bit of discussion about it in the League Pass thread, though it is definitely worthy of its own thread.
Nice news in a way. In another way it feels like the league is devaluing its product and slashing the potential value of future tv rights deals once the big ESPN one expires.

The potential value of TV rights deals is falling fast anyway. Given their financial situation, ESPN isn't going to be able to make the kind of offers they've been doing.

I'd like to point out that there are a lot of indicators that this is the way the world is headed. Broadcast networks exclusivity on providing entertainment and sports content is loosening. Internet broadcasts are becoming more common place. Streaming services SEEM to be the wave of the future. |

The NFL went from streaming on Twitter to this coming season simul-streaming on Amazon Prime. If the WNBA can get its live content onto one of these streaming services, I think that could be pretty exciting.

It's also the equivalent to my 'make one game a week on League Pass free to everyone' idea, except with greater reach because people might run into the games on Twitter, whereas they'd have to search them out on WNBA.com. It'll depend on how much of a push the games get on Twitter, but I think this is a great move. The theory successive WNBA presidents have pushed is that if you get more people to taste the games, they become fans and want to see more. Well this is the home-based streaming version of that. Put the games in front of people on social media, and maybe they'll take a look if they've got nothing better to do that night.
And if more people are interested or start watching, then the value of rights goes up (whether streaming or TV). So do the ticket sales, sponsorships and merchandise revenues. This is like adding another TV deal alongside ESPN, but with the potential to reach a lot more people than a few games on Spike or Lifetime. At the very, very least, it's worth a shot. |

So Twitter wants to become an internet broadcast network to integrate with their social media. |

I'd gave thought a preseason game would have been a good way to work out the kinks.

Plus Twitter is actually paying the W for them...

Amazon Prime is streaming Thursday Night Football this season. the lineup looks good; lots of old school rivalries. btw, Twitter broadcast TNF last year.

I would imagine so, here's another article with more detailed info:

The new Roku app will be available as a free download starting today in the Roku Channel Store and won’t require users to have a Twitter account in order to use it. The app will work on all Roku devices, including TVs. |

The game featuring the Dallas Wings at the Phoenix Mercury received more than 1.1 million unique viewers and an average minute audience (AMA) of 62,459. For comparisons sake, the 10 Thursday Night Football games that live streamed on Twitter during the 2016-17 averaged 3.5 million unique viewers per game. |

It would be interesting if they could combine Fan Duel and Twitter into single game contests.

BTW - I have been wondering - is there any reason why the twitter platform lends itself to live streaming, better than say, just some random ___.com out there? Or is this just twitter trying to find a mission for itself?

The twitter platform itself suits it well IMO. I don't know how it goes on a smart phone, but the desktop version is pretty good for engagement the way it shows the hashtag timeline on the screen. Though with last night's game when I tuned in the picture looked better on league pass for me so I stuck with that. Plus that way I get the silly HEB ads instead of dead air during breaks in play. Twitter will be a nice option for the future though when I just can't stand the sound of one more Kinetico.... dot com commercial.
I'm not sure what Twitter gets out of it though.

They certainly don't seem to be selling a lot ads with it, but they may see other advantages.
The eggsperts on CNBC seem to think that one of twitter's biggest problems is lack of user engagement. Lots of people sign up but very few actually use it on a regular basis. I've had a twitter account for years and only used it a few times, for ex. So I think they probably want to use sports as a way to build engagement. A lot WNBA players seem to be on twitter so maybe this is a good fit for them.
I thought the feed on twitter was better than my usual League Pass feeds.
