awhom, thank you and Luuuc (and everyone else) for the updates.
Is Kathleen Scheer playing in the WNBL this year, or was she just on the Bendigo team that played in the local leagues in the offseason?
Also, what is Jessica Foley up to? I know she retired. Is she coaching? |
Sorry if my updates on the Duke forum are not specific enough.
Leener did not play in the WNBL last season either. I don't know how much of the offseason she spends in Australia, but she might be close to qualifying for permanent residency, which would make her a better candidate for the WNBL even though she has been spectacular in the SEABL for a while.
Jess is player-coaching in the Adelaide winter league for the Norwood Flames. Her players include now-BC freshman Taylor Ortlepp. It is hard to know how long she will be able to play as she got injured in both of the seasons she has coached so far although she was still the MVP in 2015. Jo Hill (allegedly) played her last season this year in her mid-forties in the leagueand was still easily scoring in double figures. Jess should also be close to her degree.

Round 4
Tomorrow is the Melbourne Cup - a public holiday in Melbourne, so we had a Monday night game there to finish this round. The traditional Boomers-Rangers rivalry produced a thriller in front of a packed house (2200 is a massive crowd by WNBL standards)
Earlier in the round we saw some unexpected results as the top 2 teams both lost, and so did Townsville. Bendigo the big movers this weekend after conquering a seriously tough road double, led by Canadian Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe, who would have to be in the league MVP conversation atm. Here in Perth the Lynx feasted on the inexperienced Lightning. Stat of the round would have to be Mikaela Ruef pulling down 22 boards on Friday night. That is yuge.

Daylight or standard time? We're changing to standard tonight at midnight. Don't know if you Aussies do this dance with us or not.

I can see the WNBL opening up their league to foreign stars as it could boost interest, but I don't agree with importing foreign non-stars. Give the job to the locals.

Round 5
Canberra fell to Bendigo, but led by Lauren Mansfield they bounced back to upset Dandenong the next day. Townsville made it to overtime on a remarkable shot (Clip 1) (Clip 2) by Suzy Batkovic and then scraped past Sydney in the extra period. Melbourne were shell shocked in the 1st quarter in Perth and never recovered. 3 minutes into the game it was already 15-0 so coach subbed out their entire starting 5 and left them on the bench for the rest of the quarter.

Round 6
Townsville got their mojo back this weekend with 2 tough road wins. The one against Bendigo leaves Perth in sole possession of top spot. Dandenong bounced back from last week's loss to Canberra by crushing them on Saturday. Melbourne continued their slide and are now in danger of losing touch with the top 6 teams.
Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe continued her great form and would have to be the frontrunner for POTM so far. Asia Taylor has been impressive in recent weeks as well.

Yes, knee injury, but only minor. She is a chance to be back in action next game.

A WNBA team should really give Whitcomb a look, if not just for her 3 pt shooting prowess alone

Round 7
The most visible round yet, with the first 4 games all being live streamed, and Sydney usually post their games on YouTube a couple of days later so it could be 5/5 available to see.
Bendigo Spirit moved to first place with a quality road win over Perth, followed by brushing the Lightning aside the next day. Dandenong won the Melbourne Derby this afternoon after a late scare. Townsville's luck on the road ended, losing 2 close ones this weekend to Canberra and then Sydney.
There is really not a lot separating the top 6 teams atm, which is keeping things very interesting.

Wonder if Raincock-Ekunwe gets a look in a WNBA camp somewhere next year. I quite liked her during the Olympics, and she's not doing herself any harm with her numbers in Australia. That said, Asia Taylor's lighting up the WNBL, and she's struggled to make much impact in her glimpses of WNBA action. Either one probably needs to luck into the right situation to stick on a WNBA roster. |

She has a real quick release and can shoot off the dribble. 2 things that are important if she wants to stick on a wnba roster.

My concern with Nayo is the tweener factor. In the context of the WNBL she is quick and athletic, but step up to the WNBA and I'd be worried that she becomes too small of a player to not have a good mid-range game. Though I say that having not seen as many Spirit games as I'd have liked.
And yes Asia is the other interesting one. I think that a confidence-building season down here could be a good boost for her, but there is still that issue of the WNBL kinda being "half a size" smaller than the elite level.

Just saw on the Perth Lynx twitter that Brianna Butler (Syracuse) just signed with them. With Whitcomb and her they are going to lead the world in 3 pointers. Lol

Carley Mijovic puts up almost as many attempts as Sami does so yeah it's an interesting signing. I thought we'd go for someone a bit bigger to help on the boards, to fill the role that Betnijah Laney played so well for us last season. To me that's a bigger area of need in the longer term. Oh well, perimeter barrage it is then. That could be fun too.
Lynx sign American sharp-shooter Brianna Butler |
Maybe they meant to sign Briana Butler (nee Gilbreath). Wouldn't be the first time in sports that a team made that kind of screw-up . |

Melbourne Boomers have released Chante Black
Quote: |
The Deakin Melbourne Boomers has parted ways with import Chante Black, and today waived her from the playing roster.
Boomers General Manager, Justin Nelson, said the decision was not taken lightly.
“We want to thank Chante for her time here. While it didn’t work out as we had hoped, we wish her well for the future,” he said.
“It’s been a busy five months for our club, and our key focus over the next phase is to ensure we are building a successful team.” |

Boomers in scapegoating mode IMO after a disappointing start to the season.
