Phoenix/Dallas did 230,000,Indiana/Minnesota did 217,000.With the star power of Diggins/Sims/Parker/Ogwumike I was hoping for atleast 220k...185k is just depressing.

Speaking of ratings, Iceland's European Championship soccer win over England on Monday produced a 99.8% share in Iceland. 99.8% of households in the island nation tuned in.
Now, admittedly, that doesn't translate to a huge number of TVs in a country of only 330,000 people, but impressive nonetheless.

Kind of impossible since about 30,000 of them were supposedly in France watching the game, as well. Maybe it was 99.8% of the people actually still in the country. And some sheep. |

Ratings are percentage of total households that watch something. Share is percentage of television on at that time watching that event. 99.8 is still pretty impressive although I suppose none of the other channels were aggressively counter-programming the game.
In the United States, there are ratings measures for both households and individuals. The totals that I provide here are for individuals.

Monday: 111,000; 125,000; 168,000; 228,000 (debut of Ben Simmons), 161,000

The above was not a typo.
If you were curious about how many people watched The Basketball Tournament Sweet Sixteen on ESPN2, yesterday's games averaged 191,000 and 161,000.

that's a shocker. The other day games on Wednesday drew ok. 9,000 only is terrible. For once there were more people in the arena then watched it on NBATV.

Maybe the fact that it was a morning game on a week day had something to do with that. Many people were probably at work.

I suppose the timing could be an explanation until you consider that head-to-head during the same time period or overlapping time periods reruns of UFC on Fox Sports 2 drew 21,000, Senior British Open golf tournament on the Golf channel drew 85,000, the Tour de France on NBC Sports drew 69,000, His & Hers (unwatchable any time in my view) on ESPN2 drew 206,000, a baseball game (not sure the teams) on MLB drew 212,000, the 11am to noon Sports center drew 293,000.
So there were plenty of sports fans watching TV at the time. They were just watching other stuff than the WNBA game.

This is great info, and shows how far the game has to go in terms of attracting a mass audience.
In practical terms, it means that any expansion needs to be justified by in-arena ticket-selling potential. The TV money isn't going to increase unless ratings increase and that seems unlikely.

I was surprised to learn that ESPN has committed to pay the womens basketball league a rights fee of about $25 million a year starting next season. That equates to about $2 million a team or double what ESPN had been paying the WNBA. In 2013, ESPN and the WNBA agreed to a six-year extension valued at $12 million that would run through 2022. As ESPN renegotiated its NBA deal in 2014, it opened up the WNBA deal, as well. |

I don't know the details of the ESPN contract, but my guess would be it is independent of the number of teams in the league. If so, it would mean that any expansion would cost existing teams money (the annual TV income would be split 14 ways rather than 12), so it would be a hard sell to get the existing teams to approve new franchises.
Now it could be that the ESPN deal ratchets up if new teams are added, which would make it much easier to expand.

WNBA's 20th season produces strong numbers and ratings
http://espn.go.com/wnba/story/_/id/17195190/wnba-20th-season-produces-strong-numbers-ratings
Quote: |
A milestone season has produced strong numbers for the WNBA.
The league has amassed more than 24 million video views across its social media platforms, nearly five times more than at this point last season. It also has seen a record number of subscriptions to WNBA League Pass, up more than 20 percent from last year.
The WNBA has made a huge marketing push this year -- the league's 20th season -- and that certainly has helped.
Says WNBA president Lisa Borders: "This is a historic season and all the metrics are trending in a positive direction and we're thrilled about that."
ESPN has seen household ratings increase 100 percent over last year and 23 percent among viewers. |
