China jumps out early with three golds, all by women

Ecuador, Hungary, Iran, Italy, Japan, Kosovo, South Korea, and Thailand have one each

The US has not medaled so far

Continentally, that's seven for Asia, three for Europe, one for South America. Africa, North America, and Oceania are shut out of gold so far.

There aren't a whole lot of events that are contested during the second week of the Olympics, in which China is reasonably expected to win gold. Meanwhile, USA, barring something completely unexpected, will likely clean up in Track and Field.

In 2016 the USA took the Gold lead early and never looked back. China already has more than they got in Rio. We may overtake the Chinese but it's going to a step back from last time.

As you already pointed out, the US has "underperformed" in several women's events, relative to previous games. Particularly in Aquatics. USA is going to leave Tokyo without gold (and possibly empty-handed) in at least 5-6 events where they were favored/expected to win. Meanwhile, China is winning all the events they were expected to win, and picking up a couple of upsets, besides. That makes a big difference.

US women are a little ahead of the US men now. US men are having an uncharacteristically hard time at track & field, with only one gold so far (by Ryan Crouser in the shot put).

Still got a chance to take the lead, down the stretch, but I'd better start looking for a tasty sauce, and some good sangria to wash this crow down with, just in case.

US should gain some ground over the last couple of days. It could be tight, especially if China can pull out a couple of combat sport golds. There's still one diving event left. The Chinese have been dominating those events.

Gonna be tight, either way: USA can't afford any more upsets, in any team events.
