Kim Smith? It's no longer Gaucher? Did she divorce her first husband, and decide to keep her "maiden" name when she remarried, rather than go through a third name change?

Also, I thought that she said that she was going to retire, after Rio?

As far as I know it's Kim Gaucher these days (or sometimes Smith Gaucher). I think awhom111 tends to stick with old names to avoid confusion over Kim X and Kim Y being different people. Valeriane Vukosavljevic is still Valeriane Ayayi for France, for example.

Well, congratulations to @awhorn111, for avoiding confusion. [/sarcasm]

I, for one, appreciate the clarification provided with the Chinese roster, as given the WNBA's dubious record with getting East Asian names in the right order, I wasn't sure what order Han Xu's name should be in, and now I know.

Every member of the Nigerian team went to college in the USA. I wonder how many are actually residents of Nigeria.

"Fancy graphics show the French defense surrendering" says the American announcer as a Japanese player scores uncontested.

Bad loss for France, especially since they are in Group B. They won't make the quarters unless they can upset the US in the prelims.

The two best third-placed teams advance, so they'll still have a shot if they beat Nigeria and lose to the US. Depends on what happens in the other groups, and their point-difference.

But yes, awful performance from France, and a damaging loss.

Every member of the Canadian team except for one went to college in the USA. I'm not going to look up how many of them are actually residents of Canada.

Australia-Belgium is underway
https://olympics.com/tokyo-2020/olympic-games/en/results/basketball/results-women-gpc-000100-.htm

Steph Talbot sitting on the sidelines with a yet-to-be-mentioned injury. Not ideal for our chances Confused

looks like DELAERE had a nice game. I've never heard of her. I see she's 27. Any comments on how she looked. Is she good enough to make a w team?

1 point lead for Canada over South Korea at the end of one. South Korea looks like a pretty solid team.

They've been pretty good for quite a while but they have the serious flaw of JiSu Park being essentially their only big. Makes them vulnerable inside, and she tends to get banged up or worn down in games (and if she gets in foul trouble they're completely screwed). In their position, by now, a lot of countries would've gone out and found an American over 6-3 to naturalise.

Park's playing well tonight, and has had the best of both Achonwa and Alexander, at least offensively. I didn't realize she plays for Las Vegas. She doesn't get much playing time, probably because the Aces prefer that big Aussie at center.

Why wouldn't they?

Canada has run their bigs at her in relays in the third quarter, and wore her down. As you said, when she finally went to the bench, there was nobody to replace her.

It is more of a philosophical thing for me since I do not believe that name changes should be allowed except for extreme circumstances. It is kind of like my occasionally confusing attempts to not use sponsorship names other than universities for club teams.

There was that point in time when South Korea was considering naturalizing Amber Harris. It looks like they are not having foreign players either this season so candidates would have a tough time getting in the picture. I am not sure if Kim Roberson counts as naturalized or not, but if she does, that spot would have been reserved for her if not for her injury.

So, you don't think that a person should be allowed to have agency over their own name? "His momma named him Clay, Imma call him Clay"? Is that it?
