She's still running second behind Stewart

The "someone else" I voted for was Sabrina Ionescu. I was stunned that she wasn't one of the options. As a Liberty fan, I am absolutely thrilled with how brilliantly Betnijah Laney was played in our first six games. But for me Ionescu has been central to the early success of the Liberty. She definitely gets my vote as team MVP.

Sabrina aka S.A.B.

It could also stand for Son of A Bitch, which is precisely what her opponents & the opposing fans yell out every time she nails a clutch shot in front of them. Cool

Every previous MVP has met five criteria:

At least 43.4 FG%
At least 15.5 ppg
No more than three games missed
Play for a .500 or better team
Leads her team in scoring

To be included in the weekly poll a player must meet four of those five. Ionescu only meets three.

Of course you have every right to set whatever criteria you like for your weekly poll. I had no idea what these criteria were; I didn't see them posted.

It is certainly striking that so far 14 of 64 respondents (22%) have voted for "someone else" rather than any of the 14 nominees you chose. At least two of us voted for Sabrina Ionescu; I wonder how many others did. I don't regret my vote.

All I can tell you is that she doesn't fit the traditional mold of players who win MVP. Voters have demonstrated very little tolerance for low FG% and not much more for players who aren't their team's primary scorer.

In my view, when 20% of voters (currently 14 out of 70) reject ALL of the 14 listed candidates for MVP in favor of "someone else," that's quite a statement.
Just speaking for myself--whether regarding sports or anything else--I've rarely gone along with "traditional molds" and often have "little tolerance" for the majority view. Smile

If pilight wants us to vote only for players that meet four of his five criteria, he should just eliminate the "someone else" option. He includes that option, so I've always assumed we can ignore the criteria.

I, too, voted for SEI mainly because she's a nova who's ionizing the WNBA atmosphere with some sparkling clutch play for a formerly dead planet. I have no idea whether she can keep it up until the actual MVP voting at season's end.

But it will be interesting to watch her flirt with the 43.4 FG% criterion. She's at 42.3% after six games and was 45.5% in 142 college games.

Thanks, Glenn. I'm delighted that there are now at least three of us in the "someone else" camp who've voted for Sabrina. And I love your description of "ionizing the WNBA atmosphere with some sparkling clutch play for a formerly dead planet." Since I live on that planet in Manhattan, I am definitely feeling what you've well described.
