Didn't know which forum to put this in, but this has been a tough 10 days for Cal players in the WNBA. Kristen Anigwe was one of the last cuts for the LA. Sparks. Mikaela Cowling was one of the last cuts for Washington. Brittney Boyd played a few games for the Sky but has now been let go with the arrival of their number 1 draft pick, Shyla Heal. Reshanda Gray played a few games for the Liberty before being let go. And now Layshia Clarendon has been waived by the Liberty. Cal's entire contingent wiped out in such a short time.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a few picked up again for spot duty throughout the season.

Are there any plans in the works for the WNBA expanding with new teams?

Anigwe already got picked up upon being cut by one of her former teams, the Wings. Still, it remains to be seen how long she lasts with them, or when other Cal grads resurface.

I thought Cowling was an underrated pickup for Atlanta, but the Dream went with another player in the same position group as her for their last roster spot.

It would be cool if they all landed on the San Francisco expansion team!...along with some of Stanford's 'almost' players. We could definitely provide a local bench contingent, but would need some star power for starters.

Not that I heard of.

The City . . . where a rookie WNBA salary might be less than the annual price of a studio apartment in a decent neighborhood.

In a bad neighborhood ...

The players would not be living in the City, that's for sure.

But I think the only way a team gets to the Bay Area is via relocation. Expansion costs existing franchises too much money in TV fees and sponsorship share for present owners to stomach. And nobody is going to pay real dollars for a new WNBA team ...

Don't the teams provide housing during the season?

Monthly housing allowance if you opt out of team housing:

Team 2020 2021 2022 2023 2024 2025 2026 2027
ATL $1,144 $1,173 $1,202 $1,232 $1,263 $1,294 $1,327 $1,360
CHI $1,768 $1,812 $1,858 $1,904 $1,952 $2,000 $2,050 $2,102
CON $1,456 $1,492 $1,530 $1,568 $1,607 $1,647 $1,689 $1,731
DAL $1,560 $1,599 $1,639 $1,680 $1,722 $1,765 $1,809 $1,854
IND $1,144 $1,173 $1,202 $1,232 $1,263 $1,294 $1,327 $1,360
LVA $1,040 $1,066 $1,093 $1,120 $1,148 $1,177 $1,206 $1,236
LAS $2,080 $2,132 $2,185 $2,240 $2,296 $2,353 $2,412 $2,472
MIN $1,248 $1,279 $1,311 $1,344 $1,378 $1,412 $1,447 $1,483
NYL $2,340 $2,399 $2,458 $2,520 $2,583 $2,647 $2,714 $2,782
PHO $1,300 $1,333 $1,366 $1,400 $1,435 $1,471 $1,508 $1,545
SEA $1,716 $1,759 $1,803 $1,848 $1,894 $1,941 $1,990 $2,040
WAS $1,976 $2,025 $2,076 $2,128 $2,181 $2,236 $2,292 $2,349

I think that it is a little weird that they fix the amounts instead of agreeing on publications that can be used as benchmarks. What if a local rental market crashes or goes crazy in the next few years?
