Chicago at their amateurish selves again. That's two matches in a row with no attendance report. April 26 vs San Diego and now May 10 vs Washington.

Maybe they are just too embarrassed to report such low numbers. Whatever the reason, it's bush league and rather pathetic of them.

I hope this happens. Otherwise, the Chicago Stars won't survive at Seat Geek Stadium.

Article made me laugh---they think they can bring 11,500 to a match!??! They struggle to break 3,000. Maybe Chicago just isn't the right market....or perhaps ownership doesn't give a damn enough to market the team correctly. Or both.

FINALLY the April 26 match comes in...18 days after the match, but finally in.

2,246 bothered to show up. What's going on in Chicago? Is it the stadium being down in Bridgeview? Should the stars try and go for a stadium closer to the city center? I don't think it's a failed market. A city as large as Chicago should not be struggling so hard to get people to go to games. Something needs to change there.

The Stars are having another bad season. There's a reason why the Chicago Fire moved out of Seat Geek and back to Soldier Field. Fans have same d the stadium is hard to get to and there's little mass transit.

They are at it AGAIN.

multiple games' attendances not reported well...it's like a treasure hunt to find these things. Missing August 21, 2025 Angel City FC (of all teams) vs Orlando Pride match.

And attendance is down slightly this season. Overall, about half of the teams upped their ticket prices(Portland, Bay FC, Gotham FC, Angel City). It's still amazing how much the NWSL still shows itself as a minor league. The heat match a few weeks ago that was delayed by 4 hours. The commissioner was not happy about that because it was a nationally televised game. It's obvious that the league gets a boost during Olympic and World Cup years. Expansion talks have gotten quite, too, for after 2026. Like the WNBA, their next media deal will foresee a lot for the league going forward. Too many players lately have left the NWSL for Europe or Mexico.

FINALLY got the missing Angel City number. Had to wait on them to post the game recap card from their last game to get it...but 15,749. Through 126 games overall attendance is 1,348,269 for an average of 10,701.

Last season the final avg was 11,235 over 182 games so to just assume the same over 126 would have been 1,415,610, so off 67,341. The same 182 games will be played this season, so the league has some work to do. We shall see.

Perhaps the defections are to do with the CBA allowing players to move in the transfer windows as they wish....chasing bigger $$$$ in Europe and Mexico perhaps?? Still not good to be losing the top flight players. Angel City will likely be losing Thompson to Chelsea with tomorrow's English transfer window deadline.

With 2 more teams coming online next season, that will bring the league to 16. I think that's a good spot to pause expansion for a bit and strengthen the league. Chicago is moving into a stadium at Northwestern University. It's smaller than Seat Geek at about 12,000 capacity so their games won't see as empty. But dude, the Stars have got to figure something out because averaging just 2,964 a game (have to throw out the anomaly of the Soldier Field game) just isn't going to cut it. Hopefully being closer to downtown will help things, but less than 3,000 in a city like Chicago is just inexcusable.

the owner recently stated they want to build their own stadium. but that's years away from happening. The Stars are a joke. I'm honestly surprised the new owners just don't move the team to Indianapolis or St. Louis.

I am as well....of course I'm sure the league has something to do with it....having a city name like Chicago in your league makes the league at least LOOK better. Kind of like how leagues covet a New York and Los Angeles team for the image of it.

Chicago Stars drew 10,127 at Northwestern's Stadium today. Keep the team there until they get their own stadium built.

Yes indeed. I was pleasantly surprised to see that big of a number pop up for them. LOL Imagine that--playing downtown Chicago kinda works! Razz

Though a great idea, not feasible long-term. Someone on Reddit mentioned that Northwestern's stadium will be getting redone in 2027.

NWSL Faces Declining Attendance Across 2025 Season

https://justwomenssports.com/reads/nwsl-faces-declining-attendance-across-2025-season/

Quote:
However, with just three matchdays left in the 2025 regular season, eight of the league's 14 teams are seeing lower per-game attendance than during 2024's surge, with the overall NWSL average down nearly 10%.

Many factors can impact ticket-buying — including pricing, location, and on-field product — and navigating these considerations can be tough as teams look to fill seats.

15 home dates left to go (Angel City vs Houston from October 12 hasn't been reported yet Evil or Very Mad )

Overall attendance reported is at 1,742,688 though 167 matches for an average of 10.435. Through 182 matches last season (same number as this year) the avg ended at 11,235 and total of 2,044,848.

This season Portland (imagine that) leads the way at 214,340 (17,862 avg)

To match last season, over the remaining 15 matches attendance will have be to 20,144 a game. That isn't going to happen, so there will be a dip this year.

Imagine that! Portland and Orlando don't report attendance in final home match of the season. I'm <SHOCKED> I tell you, just <SHOCKED> they would fail such basic operations tasks.

Down an average of 652 per game across the league--a little more than 5%, just a tick over 6%.

2024 was 2,044,848 with an avg of 11,235 over 182 matches
2025 was 1,926,090 with an avg of 10,583 over 182 matches

2025 drew more by had a lower avg than 2023 (10,869 over 131 matches)

I'd anticipate overall attendance to go up the next few years. Expansion next year plus Chicago changing stadiums. Then 2027 has the World Cup and then 2028 will have the Olympics. Who knows about further expansion by then

Yes, I expect the overall attendance number to go up by default. Two more teams means 4 more games. Season expands from 26 to 30 games for 2026. Atlanta is coming in in 2028. If no other city comes in with them, and the league doesn't split into conferences and keeps the same format, that expands the season to 32 games.

Now, what I would hope, is that the average attendance also goes up. I would hope it would with the new cities being Denver and Boston and now Atlanta, but then you wouldn't think a city like Chicago would do well. Most NWSL cities are doing, okay, and some are still awful.

I'm anticipating an 18th team coming in for 2028. Atlanta, sort of, came out of nowhere since they weren't named for a 2026 finalist. It should still be Cincinnati, but I'm not sure the MLS owners want to fork over $180 million+ in an expansion fee. Others have said that Louisville(due to low attendance) may end up relocating by then, and Cincinnati should be the target. Can MLS's Austin afford that expansion fee? or does Cleveland move up? Would be interesting if Cleveland gets it and both the NWSL & WNBA expansion teams begin in the same year.

Two conferences shoudl happen by 2028:
EAST: Boston, Gotham FC, Washington, Atlanta, Orlando, NC Courage, Louisville(or Cincinnati), Chicago, Kansas City
WEST: Seattle, Portland, Angel FC, Bay FC, San Diego, Utah, Houston, Denver, Austin(18th team).
