I wondered how the Terps have fared against ranked out-of-conference powerhouses. Their website stats only go back to 2014-2015 (although I’m fairly sure there is another unindexed archive somewhere) but the story is no surprise:
2014-15
lost to ND 92-72, lost to UConn (NCAA, Terps most recent Final Four) 81-58
2015-16
lost to UConn 83-73, lost to Washington (NCAA 7th seed, Terps 2nd seed) 74-65
2016-2017
Beat Louisville 78-72, lost to UConn 87-81, lost to Oregon (NCAA 10th seed, Terps were 3rd seed) 77-63
2017-2018
Lost to South Carolina 83-76, lost to UConn 97-72, lost to NC State (NCAA 4th seed, Terps were 5th seed) 74-60
2018-2019
Beat South Carolina 85-61, lost to UCLA (NCAA 6th seed; Terps were 3rd seed) 85-80
I'm guessing that they get seeded high because of their Big Ten dominance, but generally can't deliver the goods come tournament time. I mean, it's not a happy realization to see how often they have been beaten by teams seeded lower than they were, with Sunday's game in Texas being the continuation of that sad propensity. But then, the story of Brenda has long been that she’s better at recruiting than coaching.
