The golfer was driving alone near Rancho Palos Verdes when his vehicle flipped over. Fire fighters had to use a device known as the 'jaws of life' to break open the car and rescue him.

His condition is not known. LA County Sheriff's Department confirmed the crash.

Story updated with statement from Woods' agent Mark Steinberg:

"Tiger Woods was in a single-car accident this morning in California where he suffered multiple leg injuries. He is currently in surgery and we thank you for your privacy and support."

He just had back surgery in Dec. too.

Lt Michael White of the LA County Sheriff’s Department says Tiger has non-life threatening injuries and pushed back very hard against the jaws of life report as issued earlier by his own department.

It's going to be interesting to find out what his injuries are reported to be. Since players on the PGA Tour are required to walk the course, this could really be impactful to his career. Of course walking the course could be the least of his worries if you think about all of the torque on the legs of a golfer.

I think it’s horrible to face the reality he might never compete again. It’s a tremendous loss for us as well as Tiger. Honestly, I don’t see how he’s even going to be able to walk normally and without some pain and lack of mobility. Auto accidents are one of those things like severe burns that have this tendency to physically alter a person permanently. I can’t believe the damage to that vehicle. Those Genesis passenger compartments must be put together like tanks. Just a sad thing to happen but you have to be happy that he’s still alive. To follow up losing Kobe with Tiger would have been unimaginable.

Now that we know his condition is stable, here is something to consider. It seems clear Woods was traveling at a high speed and the accident was severe. He was driving a Genesis SUV provided by the Genesis Invitational. Is it good for Genesis that Woods was not more seriously injured given the violent crash (thereby showcasing the safety of the car), or does the fact of the crash stain the reputation of Genesis. It could be particularly problematic if there was some malfunction of the vehicle.

There were no skid marks, either before or after the car hit a sign and crossed over through the oncoming traffic lanes and came to rest 300 feet off the road (presumably 300 feet from where the car went off the road because it appeared much closer than that from the pictures. The front of the car was destroyed but it is unclear what it hit to create such damage. The passenger cabin was largely intact (which is a safety feature).

I can't remember where I read it, but the article said that this stretch of road is known for high speed accidents. It sounded like it was the way it was designed. Something about the downhill and curves and that you end up going faster than you think you are. They have even put up 100 feet of sand to stop runaway cars. Made me think of the uphill roads in the mountains for runaway trucks.

It sounds like this vehicle is made like race cars. Built to break apart, but the passenger compartment stay intact.

That sounds about right. Just nothing down there to keep your legs from flying around and getting caught and twisted in the pedals. Plus it seems like he was in surgery for a L O N G time!

He's going to face more surgeries. Him playing competitively again would be miraculous.

OTOH, Ben Hogan had a worse crash and came back to win six more majors.

I read he was upset and already speeding when he left the golf event, and that he crossed the median, went through some signs, hit a tree, and then rolled the car. Most of the car damage appears to be the front and rear, so maybe he rolled it end-over-end. He's lucky to be alive, but he's got a tough rehab ahead of him.

Well the Sheriff’s Department said he hit a tree. I haven’t studied the pictures but that seems to figure because something very hard and solid had be there to bloody well destroy a car engine like that.

As far as his state of mind and driving... someone at the hotel or wherever he had just come from... the director of the videos he was taking part in... said that he almost got into an accident with Tiger as he left the driveway of the place... that Tiger was driving aggressively and the guy was cursing about it.

Some thoughts from forensic car accident experts.

Given that he was apparently upset or angry when he left the event, it seems unlikely that he fell asleep a short time later. My money is on distraction, either due to cell phone use or something else.
