Yeah, plenty of them seemed to be at the Capitol just to be "part of the club".
People don't get properly fired up over something that they're told but don't actually understand/believe.

The most obvious difference being that those people were protesting something that actually happened

Whether it was a valid protest doesn't change that it appeared to be a protest, not a "revolution" or "coup". "insurrection" could be shoe horned in. But that could also be used for burning or taking over police stations. I think it was a bad precedent to mostly condone that this summer.

I don't think that the guy with his feet up on Pelosi's desk or the one who stole her lectern were thinking that she was not going to be in power the next day.

Complicated but I agree that most of those people were out to be heard and not to hurt anyone or destroy our historic sites.

This time.

So the Caitlin Flanagan piece. It's amazing and, as much as I love her, just a tinge class cruel. But, for starters, I just want to talk for a second about the title which I'm sure is her being her super clever figurative self.

Worst Revolution Ever

So many of us who grew up in the 1960s and who experienced the war in Vietnam and the assassinations, only for all of that to be followed up with the 1970s and this new awareness and actual paranoia that America was turning into a corporate controlled country with the CIA doing the dirty work on our own citizens that they'd been doing around the globe for decades... and then to see that fear all realized as we came into the Reagan 80s... so many of us long dreamed of a leftist revolution.

So many different fantasies. That the white and black working classes would see they have more in common in their struggles and unite, etc. That a celebrity savior would run and turn the country around, etc.

Well. None of that happened. And the country continued to deteriorate. Towns were turned into wastelands. The American working classes became even less educated, more preyed upon by a predatory economy full of scams and banks that ruined their lives, schools that failed to actually teach them anything they needed to compete in this world, opportunity hoarding by the affluent who had abandoned public schools to private K-12 schools. And let's get real, a stagnation of progress in the black community that is stultifying and stunning to witness as someone who dreamed that this country would one day right those wrongs.

And so that brings us to where we are now. And I'll save some of that for another post directed at mercfan.

But here it is. If we had any kind of a revolution in this country, beyond the bloodshed, which would be incredible, the result itself would be an ignorant disorganized catastrophe unlike anything that's ever happened in the world. Because, hello, nothing like the United States has ever happened in the world. We are the third most populated country on the planet but by far the worlds' largest economy. And the most powerful military. But the dudes who take this country over? Those who can and very well might actually bring a million or two armed to the teeth rednecks to DC and lay waste to it all and repeat the scene everywhere else? They are going to be destroyers of everything they see. And after they clean out the refrigerators at the White House they're going to go back home and wonder why their Social Security checks aren't coming.

So that's a reality check for me as to what this revolution I've been dreaming about since I was 14 years old would look like now. We're not going to be getting behind Oprah and the best and the brightest from her pool of guests over the years. We have these working class people so turned around that many of them showed up there railing against socialism. Because socialism is that politically toxic a word in this country. It doesn't matter what it really means. The big dudes with pepper spray and zip ties only have high school educations. The veterans who have done so many tours of duty overseas because that was the best job available to them. The military. They're never going to get with anything that comes across as socialism.

So we can stop dreaming about it. Or about anything good. The country is permanently divided now and will slowly become an even more dangerous and unpleasant place over the coming decades and centuries. But I'll get into that with mercfan.

tfan you had something in one of your last posts about the media but I guess edited it out but when I saw it I thought of this YouTube vid.

So there's SO much in this 7:55 segment that I actually was going to transcribe some of it for you guys since I know people might not actually watch the clip. But it is brilliant stuff from these young people. Should be required watching for everyone wanting to have this discussion here.

I like Matt Taibbi and watch the Rolling Stone video-cast he does with Katie Halper from time to time.

What I had started to say was that all media is now talking about political issues in the same exaggeration and overly-dramatic style that was more typical on Fox News in the past (MSNBC to a lesser extent). And it has driven ratings up for CNN and MSNBC. Fox News used to have more viewers than both combined, and recently they have both had higher ratings than Fox News. It seems like news stories are now ratcheted up in the same way that HTML link headlines are (so people are more likely to click them). Some of that was brought on by their strong dislike of Trump, but I suspect it is here to stay since it has proven so successful.

Taibbi talked about how we used to get our news from three networks (who only broadcast it a few hours a day) and they had to appeal to everyone. They also had to broadcast mostly news. Now the "news channels" give a small snippet of news and then bring in a panel of lawyers and political operatives to shout about how outrageous it all is and exaggerate a situation as much as they can. If we're lucky a few of them are journalists or reporters.

While Taibbi talks media organizations pushing an agenda and attacking the other side which creates division, it doesn't seem to be symmetrical, at least in the age of Trump. The things the Republican media (Fox News, NewsMax, OANN) attack the Democrats for ("socialism" ,open borders, identity politics) aren't things that will get you banned on twitter. or fired from your job What the Democrat media (not Fox News, NewsMax or OANN) currently accuse the Republicans of (racism, "fascism") are. And it is all up to the interpretation of the accuser in most cases.

He had another point about people voting for Trump because they didn't trust what they were being told by the media and traditional politicians. Trump was only popular in the primaries with a minority of Republicans (less than 30%) . I put it more on them not being happy about their lives, and that was I would bet, mostly economic. China/Mexico job outsourcing/trade-deficit and bringing jobs back seemed to be the largest part of a 2015 Trump rally speech.

I just cleared the notifications on my iPhone but I should have done a screen shot or two or more because if you subscribe to the New York Times and their ‘breaking news alerts’ you could have absolutely NO doubt that they curate and voice even those breaking news alerts to be tasty snacks for their Trump obsessed readership. We’ve fallen off a cliff

The New York Times refused to run a story about Eric Swalwell and the recent news of his apparent extra-marital relationship ("that information is classified" per his staff) with a Chinese spy when he was a Bay Area politician. It also appears that, after allowing space for Lincoln Project (the Republican anti-Trump PAC) founders to write an article, they now are not going to run an article about one of the founders/authors resigning after he admitted to the charges that he had inappropriately sexted young males.

The New York Times is lost. There are now so many examples. Sort of providing them with an excuse, my take has been that the entire news media sort of got up on their hind legs when Trump came into power, like antibodies fighting a unwanted pathogen, and like an auto-immune disease, they’re so ramped up to act in opposition to Trump that they’re now destroying other things, too. Like their collective reputations, joining in with every other establishment news resource, all of which found themselves newly appreciated by an audience that lapped up all the ant-Trump stuff.

But they also are destroying some things that are bigger than even their reputation. They’re destroying truth, because if the New York Times is now intentionally and regularly no longer printing or relaying true information to the public, then they are destroying the truthfulness of history, something they’ve been busted on numerous times just in the last few years.

They’re also regularly shutting down avenues of information by doing exactly what they’re doing in the two instances you mention. And in doing that, they slow or stop dead the momentum or progression of everyone coming into the possession of facts and information that must be aired out in order for more of it to be revealed. There’s a great example of this I saw on a podcast by Bret Weinstein that uses the press and people’s responses on social media to the discussion of the source of the coronavirus.

So their main point in this segment isn’t about the source of the coronavirus. It’s this. That for the last year, one could not discuss, was not permitted to discuss, could not even mention the possibility that the coronavirus pandemic originated in that Wuhan research lab without being pounced on via social media, by experts, etc. And it was just an unmentionable off-limits topic in the establishment news media.

Until now. Apparently, the Times has gone there, and that completely opens up the subject as being acceptable for further exploration. It seems most other theories have fallen out of favor, and now this has started to more and more look like a possibility.

But the point is, their point, is that that’s how powerful the press and the Times is at this point. They can pour ice water on a story in the privacy of their newsroom, after determining through unknown means that it is not fit to print, stifling any discussion and feeding the idea that any suggestion that this pandemic was the fault of China was acting to validate to some degree Trump’s repeated attempts to pin the virus on China. And so, for purely political reasons the entirety of the news media and talking heads on TV, and the entirety of the resistance on social media, rejected anyone even suggesting that this virus might have come from that Chinese lab as being racist, Trump loving, morons etc.

And so the result is that the idea was not explored publicly. Wasn’t deemed permissible to drag this possibility out into the open for public exploration. So now, almost a year later, the possible trail that might have existed at that lab has surely gone cold.

So this is a very big and very easily understood example of what I’m talking about in terms of momentum that exists (or doesn’t) when the entire world can chew on information because they’ve been given all the news and facts that our news media might have in their possession. You’ve got to know that there are myriad numbers of other instances that are smaller and more complicated and on and on. I know of one that is not small and of the dominos that have not fallen because the New York Times has chosen to get behind an alternative narrative that is more politically acceptable at this moment in time.

I don’t know how any of this happened and happened so fast. How the news media became so politicized that they no longer give the public the truth if there’s something about that truth that works against their political agenda. But I’m thinking it really started in the aftermath of the financial crisis in ‘08 and then took a turn towards the endless distraction of identity politics as social media brought that to the degree that it has come to dominate the public arena.

As a nation at this point in our history, we’re like taking multiple stress tests simultaneously, and each of them alone is telling us that the patient is dying. Trump. Pandemic. Collapse of our economy. Failures of our news media most egregiously stoking and widening every division that exist between every group in this country. All of this coming on top of pre-existing conditions like a broken political system that answers only to money. Gross economic inequality. A centuries old racial divide. Probably a half century of a naturally occurring slowly worsening political polarization.

If you can’t imagine a political leader coming forward who everyone from the woke left to the Capitol marauders could get behind, and I certainly can’t, then we’re looking at a ridiculously dystopian future in America.

Hmmm. You've made 2 allegations: an inappropriate affair, and a sexting charge. But no sources offered?? How can we know you didn't just get that from Aunt Bea's fb page?? Laughing

Where do you get your news? If you want to be sure to get all the negative stuff on Democrats and their anti-Trump allies, you may need to add Fox News to your listening or the New York Post or Axios to your reading.

I shouldn't have said Swalwell apparently had an affair with the Chinese spy. The fact that he won't talk about their relationship is not proof of that. But Swalwell had some kind of a relationship with alleged Chinese spy Christina Fang (aka Fang Fang) and you can read about here or here. Axios reported that intelligence officials said she is known to have had sexual relations with two Midwest mayors. Hs office told Axios "To protect information that might be classified, he will not participate in your story." I forgot that that gets jokingly changed to the more damning "We can't talk about whether he had an affair with Fang Fang as that information is classified".

Quote:
Fang "was a bundler" for Swalwell and other candidates, according to a Bay Area political operative with direct knowledge of her efforts. A current U.S. intelligence official confirmed her activity for Swalwell; a local elected official also said she brought in donors for other candidates. Bundlers persuade others to write checks for campaigns; they can bring in substantial sums of money as well as deepen the campaign’s engagement with target communities, making bundlers a valuable and thus potentially influential ally to a candidate.

Fang facilitated the potential assignment of interns into Swalwell’s offices, the political operative said. In at least one case, an intern recommended by Fang was placed into Swalwell’s D.C. office, this person said. A current U.S. intelligence official confirmed the intern placement.

This article contains his letter saying that he took a leave of absence in the summer and now will not be returning. "Sexting" was not the right term to use as that appears to only involve texting pictures or video. He was texting to young men who made allegations of sexual harassment.

John Weaver, Lincoln Project co-founder, acknowledges “inappropriate” messages

WHATTTT!!? Shocked After all the posts of mine you've read, and you didn't know that I am a fervent and devoted fan of PBS newshour?? THAT'S "real news". Cool I do occasionally dabble in some other sources, especially if someone here might link something deserving of attention....which is precisely why I was curious about what sources led you to your stories.

Eric's alleged *affair* isn't really all that newsworthy, imo. IS/WAS it really a love affair? That's Enquirer stuff.

HOW young might be my only question....legal age or not? That's the only concern. Mr. Weaver, notably, acknowledged the 'offense'. Now, if YOU wanna expand your horizons, you might wanna sign on to any of the Gay (or Straight) Dating apps (Tinder, Grindr, Bear Forest, et. al.) and learn just how rampant "inappropriate language" rages across the internet. I really doubt he found innocent young males who didn't have a clue about what was going on.

That said, I personally can't see how NOT publishing either story is a mark of poor journalism on the part of the NYT.

The issue is not whether he had an extra-marital affair. And I screwed up by stating that as solid. In this case it is a relationship (whether sexual or not) between an apparent Chinese spy and a congressman (who receives her "campaign contribution bundles") that in his first term hired an intern she recommended and at the start of his second two-year term was given access to the super double top secret stuff. He is on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence is charged with oversight of the United States intelligence community, which includes the intelligence related activities of 17 elements of the U.S. Government, and the Military Intelligence Program.

If it came out that Trump had hired an intern a Chinese spy (who also "bundled" campaign money for him) had presented to him, Judy Woodruff and company probably would have told you about it.

I had thought that he was sexually harassing guys that worked for the Lincoln Project, and that is why he resigned. It turns out that they weren't associated with his group and they allege that he was offering jobs in exchange for sex. Or "grooming" them, whatever that means. So I guess he resigned because of the impropriety of offering a group's jobs for your own personal sexual benefit.

I promise you....if Eric's dalliance was a proven thing, Judy WILL be doing that. Wink

According to your Politico source (and I find Politico to be reasonably reliable): "Swalwell immediately cut off contact with Fang, and he is not suspected of any improper actions in his dealings with her."

With FANG FANG?!?!

“U.S. intelligence officials told the news organization that China’s main civilian spy agency ran an operation developing connections with local and national politicians — with particular focus on the Bay Area — between 2011 and 2015. The idea, they said, was to use Fang to develop links with politicians who were destined for bigger, national roles especially in the influential Northern California region with ties to Silicon Valley.

One such individual was Swalwell, who Fang started targeting when he was still a Dublin city councilman, according to Axios.

The news agency said she helped raise funds for his 2014 re-election campaign, although she did not make a donation herself. She also placed at least one intern in the congressman’s office and interacted with Swalwell at multiple events.”

Here’s a link (below) to the San Francisco Chronicle, my source of these quotes. BUT... If you remember the mini-scandal at The NY Times about editors going back and forth with one of the subjects of an article... I think this was within the last year... I’ll get back to you on what it was when I remember... Embarassed but you would understand how much input powerful subjects and their teams have in literally ‘placing’ self-serving language into articles.m that contain some otherwise embarrassing reporting on them. And the rest of this piece that bends over backwards to assert that Swalwell did nothing wrong looks like it was pushed into the article by a newspaper in the congressman’s district by his office.

So personally, I would take all that bending over backwards to exonerate Swallwell part as the price the Chronicle had to pay for continued good access. Journalists didn’t use to concern themselves with this issue of access. Now it’s all they talk about.

The stuff I’ve quoted and bolded doesn’t go away. And it has, I believe, been exposed that Fang slept with at least some of the people she was targeting. It seems that Eric Swallwell was the biggest fish she ever reeled in. Nothing about this case is National Enquirer stuff.

We know (maybe you don’t) that the New York Times is now in the business of protecting politicians and others who they deem to be good actors. Which is frightening and inexcusable. But that’s where we are.

Of course he immediately cut off contact with her! Again, someone is laying heavily on the language that he is not suspected of any improper actions in his dealings with her. And I’m not suggesting he was a bad actor here. But this shit happened and it happened to him! She was successful in her efforts to infiltrate and influence HIS official capacities as a public official on the rise.

And we know she was throwing some of that sweet Fang Fang stuff around to get things done. Did Swallwell dip his wick? Inquiring minds want to know.

In the old days and, when it suits them, even in these days, the New York Times will say such and such information, “raises questions.”

And that’s traditionally how we turn over rocks in this country in order to see what’s under them.

Jammerrrrr....are you implying that the NYT is *fake* news? Or just Incomplete & Manipulated News? Razz

For the record, I'M not a NYT fan, and find no need to defend them. Your mistrust of them (or any source) is a necessary part of determining what is real, viable information. But likewise, I don't find their omission of Fang Fang's deeds to be all that damning. That's my only point.

Name one news source that Gets It All Right, All The Time....some are just better at it than others, while there are those that actually pedal MIS-information.

Well, Howeeeee. Let me try to wrangle that question into something that can be answered intelligently.

Both. Certainly I’m not suggesting that every sentence or story is fake news. But do they regularly engage in publishing and promulgating what Trump calls ‘fake news?’ Yes they do. I would describe or characterize that as being the twisting of reported information, ignoring context, or omitting further information that would weaken their obvious editorial agendas. And they now do that fairly regularly.

We can hope that it was a temporary but nonetheless troubling effort by the paper to try to weaken Trump or hasten his destruction and that after Wednesday they take all of that newfound abandonment of journalistic ethics and standards and seal it in a lock box and toss it into the East River.

But they also engage in concocting larger more feature-like falsehoods.

I’ll start a thread to list some of those.

But again, once things have gotten this bad, the ripples of these failures impact and have impacted the entire paper. As much by omission (always a gripe of the hard left) as by the actual reporting of falsehoods.

So free speech. Are we fer it or agin’ it?

I know where The NY Times stands on that question.

Why T-Shirts Promoting the Capitol Riot Are Still Available Online

Merchandise with phrases like “Battle for Capitol Hill Veteran” could still be purchased on major e-commerce sites, a sign of how the platforms have struggled to remove the goods.

The day after the violent attack on the Capitol, Shopify declared that it had removed e-commerce sites affiliated with President Trump, including his official campaign store. The sites had violated a policy that prohibited the support of groups or people “that threaten or condone violence to further a cause.”

The move was initially lauded but it soon became clear that the technology company, which powers more than one million online shops, was still fueling plenty of other sites with merchandise promoting the president and goods emblazoned with phrases like “MAGA Civil War.” Apparel with similar phrases and nods to QAnon conspiracy theories also remained available on e-commerce sites like Amazon, Etsy and Zazzle.

Even as the companies scrambled to remove such merchandise, new goods commemorating and glorifying the Jan. 6 attack were proliferating. As of Friday, “Battle for Capitol Hill Veteran” shirts with drawings of the Capitol building could be purchased on Amazon for $20, Etsy was selling a “Biden Likes Minors” shirt that mimicked the look of “Black Lives Matters” signs and Zazzle had a “Civil War 2020” shirt on its site. Etsy and Zazzle have since removed the merchandise; the “Capitol Hill Veteran” shirt was still available on Amazon on Monday.

These companies have largely been built with scale and ease of access in mind, with scant oversight of what vendors were actually selling. But questions about the businesses have emerged as many rioters donned what amounted to a type of uniform that could be purchased online. This included shirts with certain phrases or illustrations printed on them, and flags that not only supported President Trump, but promoted a civil war, conspiracy theories and debunked election claims. One shirt infamously worn by one of the rioters that said “Camp Auschwitz” was later found on Etsy, prompting an apology from the company, which is known for handcrafted goods.

“There’s so much focus on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, but, in our view, the platforms are much, much wider than social media,” said Danny Rogers, chief technology officer and co-founder of the Global Disinformation Index, a nonprofit focused on the spread of falsehoods online. “There’s a broad diversity of platforms that support and enable these dangerous groups to exist, to fund raise, get their message out. It’s not just kicking people off social media, it’s kicking people off merchandising platforms.

So this piece... wow.

So wow, below Krystal Ball talking today about THIS piece in the Washington Post. I think she is nailing the political reality right now as it exists in the general population of about half the country. I think the Jimmy Dore video I posted yesterday nails the political reality as it exists within the elite political and media establishment in this country. So watching both of these videos pretty much covers a lot of ground in American politics but what do I know?

I won't paste the WaPo in its entirety like I usually do because I think it's kind of a hot mess, honestly, relying heavily on experts who are obviously inclined to downplay the financial duress conclusion and conflate it with this idea of people feeling like their America is being lost or stolen. l laugh at that. Like people are supposed to be okay with ten thousand small towns destroyed by economic collapse and all the jobs and self-sustaining communities and tax bases that allowed for an America we should all want to see come back.

And I also have a problem with the piece being in the Post's business section and not on the front page. Not surprised by either its placement in the paper or the experts downplaying the financial misery angle. Of course. It's what the elite class does. I'm actually surprised the piece actually made the paper.

But Krystal really does a great job of taking information from the article and making the right case from what the piece does reveal.

"You'd have to be a fool to think that the financial collapse of a decade ago and the general destruction that market fundamentalism has wrought on the 99% hasn't created all kinds of societal damage."

No charges for officer in Capitol riot shooting

Prosecutors said they had reviewed video of the shooting, along with statements from the officer involved and other officers and witnesses, examined physical evidence from the scene and reviewed the autopsy results.

“Based on that investigation, officials determined that there is insufficient evidence to support a criminal prosecution,” the department said in a statement.

Appalling all around. Someone storms the Capitol to disrupt a sitting Congress, gets a slap on the wrist, and the taxpayers get a bill for the trial.
