This is why Nancy took the nukes today..she knew it was coming and someone was gonna get nuked in the midst of his temper tantrum.

How did she take the nukes? Experts have indicated that the military not following a direct order from the president would be a military coup, so Nancy suggested a military coup, which should actually come with a myriad number of ‘explaining to do’ for her, whether any of us agree with the spirit of the idea or not (and I’m sure we all do in this case.) But what else? Oh... and because Trump has always seemed unhinged... the exploration of the process of any president ordering a nuclear strike was laid out in either the Times or the Post and, trust me, you don’t want to know. It’s chilling. There is NO THINKING ALLOWED. No buffer whatsoever. So I don’t know where you’re getting that the ordering of a nuclear strike is unlawful and some unelected soldiers get to make that judgment for all of us when they’re supposed to be acting in split seconds but I’m all ears.

It’s against international law to do so. Hence, it would be unlawful for Donald to order a strike with nukes. What kind of experts don’t know that?

So I REALLY have a lot to say about all of this and I have some of it Q'd up (get it? Q'd up?) and it is SURE to set everyone's hair on fire here. But I'll get to it in time because this area of our national discourse is not going anywhere anytime soon.

I just wanted to say something quick here. So I watched this as it was happening live on CNN and started also using the DVR to record ABC and to switch around to other channels and networks as well. I didn't happen to catch any of FOX's coverage though.

Anyway. And then I watched the... I think NBC Nightly news last night and saw the images and videos they'd collected in the 48 hours since the incident itself and I really have to say a few things about all of that.

So this was MUCH MUCH worse, MUCH MUCH larger and more violent than anything that I was seeing in real time on any of the channels I was watching. So I don't know what anyone here saw and what impressions they might have had. When I heard legislators claiming they feared for their lives... after what I'd seen on TV in real time... I thought... "Oh come on." After what I saw last night, however, that changed to OMG. If I were AOC I would have been very concerned that I was about to die.

That's the only thing I want to say right now is just that this was a much much larger and more successful assault on the Capitol than I had any reason to believe was the case from watching wall-to-wall coverage on CNN and other networks. I can't explain that. How their cameras could have possibly missed what I saw last night on NBC is beyond me.

I already had that impression on that night, when PBS continued its airing past their allotted hour. By 8 pm, when Judy was interviewing a Representative who was still sitting in his office with chairs barricading his door, I thought to myself, "I do believe their not showing as much as there is to show".

Part of that is, of course, the idea of NOT hyperbolizing anything that might incite utter fear and panic among those of us at home, but also because much of the better footage was on people's devices, not yet available for general distribution.

But Howie. There’s an image of people gathered at the front side of the Capitol... there was absolutely nothing like that on CNN. It looks like a Hollywood recreation of something that wasn’t that big of a deal to begin with. You know how they do.

So I agree and will engage in some further conjecture. They were not showing us the true size of the crowd. I don’t think it was to protect us, however, and tamp down panic. I think it was to downplay the size of the crowd there in support of old whack-a-doodle.

Here is what lends itself to my thinking there.

As it was unfolding initially on CNN, and we could see with our own eyes a crowd of probably five to seven thousand marching towards the Capitol, Manu Raju on CNN was saying “scores and scores” of people were taking part in this. Scores and scores? A score is twenty. lol. So that stuff immediately catches my attention. And then, later, after the crowd in the entire surrounding area could be seen easily approaching five figures, another network’s reporter, out of breath even, was gasping “hundreds” of people were there. lol.

I mean, Jesus Christ. If people don’t think there’s a memo out there that says downplay Trump’s crowds, as he has so often claimed, there it is. I’ve been watching network news coverage of big events since the 1960s. Estimating crowd size accurately and reporting the facts is 101 part of the job.

So I’m not definitively saying they were hiding wider shots of where the largest parts of the crowd were... but that sort of thing would certainly be in their nature at this point. Right there in their wheelhouse. IMO.

Pence has not ruled out 25th Amendment, source says

Quote:
Vice President Mike Pence has not ruled out an effort to invoke the 25th Amendment and wants to preserve the option in case President Donald Trump becomes more unstable, a source close to the vice president says.

As of Saturday evening, Trump and Pence still have not spoken since the Wednesday incursion at the US Capitol

My thought exactly!!

Pence has to get this done. Now.

Republicans have kicked this down the road too many times. Too many times they have looked the other way because they thought that they needed Trump.

They need to send a clear and decisive message that behavior like Trump's WILL NOT be tolerated. They need to squash the thoughts of the next person who tries to put our government at risk.

We'll survive this attempt. Will we survive the next one??

Hmmmm. Quizzical.

When I clicked on the link, it actually listed the date/time as: 2021-01-11 19:49:00. That adds 9 minutes....to the FUTURE departure, i.e., that's not until 7:49 pm EST tonight.

What’s with this Marine One trending on Twitter stuff? Is or was that really happening? People are joking that it’s Trump stalking Pence like an ex-lover cruising your street.

But I’m like... maybe they’re hovering ready to give Mike Pence a ride to his new home.

SO basically 2021 is turning out to be Norman Bates telling 2020 to “Hold my beer.”

Some people might be going away for a very long time.

But it’s very nice when some other people come back.

The Caitlin Flanagan.

Worst Revolution Ever

Here they were, a coalition of the willing: deadbeat dads, YouPorn enthusiasts, slow students, and MMA fans. They had heard the rebel yell, packed up their Confederate flags and Trump banners, and GPS-ed their way to Washington. After a few wrong turns, they had pulled into the swamp with bellies full of beer and Sausage McMuffins, maybe a little high on Adderall, ready to get it done. Like Rush Limbaugh before them, they were in search of their own Presidential Medals of Freedom, and like Donald Trump himself, they were ready to relieve themselves on the withering soul of the nation and the marble floors of the Capitol building. Out of darkness we were born and into darkness we were returning.

Like now. The election has been certified. It's over. Why are we still waiting around for inauguration?

I know why, it's because of a law written when jet travel and interstates didn't exist and it actually took weeks to move about the country.

That day is over. It's time we caught up with the rest of the civilized world.

It should be...

First Tuesday in Nov: Election Day!

Second Tuesday in Nov: Electors vote in their states

Third Tuesday in Nov: Congress certifies the electoral count

Third Wednesday in Nov: Inauguration Day!

I think other countries may also have shorter run-ups to elections. We have candidates declaring in the winter and spring, 21 to 16 months before a November election in the following year. In the last UK prime minister election Theresa May declared there would be an election on April 18, 2017, and it was held less than two months later on June 8.

EXCELLENT read.

Puts the finger on something I couldn't quite identify....the *different-ness* of these misguided souls. As raucous as they seemed, they also seemed to not have any kind of killer edge to themselves. I might ascribe the very different nature of these wannabe "revolutionaries" (as compared to "Real" revolutionaries) to the fact that most of them were raised in a land of opportunity and freedom, and probably haven't ever been hungry a day in their lives, or seen their homes bombed, or been tortured and interrogated, or their witnessed kids killed by enemy bombs, or.....you get the picture.

These are people who've cultivated their Revolutionary's Armor by living in the land of video games and action movies, and been listening to the Alex Joneses of the internet to foment their fear/hatred. But they still have the manners to follow the path of velvet ropes. Bizarre.

Amazing Howee. That was the thing that struck me so in watching the coverage, I saw it and recognized it immediately as I had been taught to recognize it in Poli-Sci TO THE POINT that that was the quote I tweeted back at Caitlin Flanagan herself. (Calling someone herself or himself after an Irish name just cracks me up.)

Yeah so it’s called the socialization of the working class and we do most of the work ourselves. (Speaking as a former mill rat and the son of a mill rat.) It starts with telling kids to shut up at the dinner table, kids don’t speak unless they’re spoken to, don’t question authority, respect your superiors, etc. don’t cut the line. Stand here. No over there. Etc.

While with the elites, or starting just with parents who went to college, they’re asked their opinions of current events at the dinner table, encouraged to speak up, to actually question authority, etc.

So, honestly, when I saw these guys walking within the designated rope line, it hurt, because those are my people. Class reveals itself constantly through language and behaviors. You just have to know what you’re looking at. And I think this REALLY was probably the first time ever we got a chance to see the America working class on the world stage and it was terrible and embarrassing.

As someone said on a podcast. Some of those people need to go away for a long time. But some of those people were like stumblers and followers on a field trip.

I have so much other stuff to say on this but you and I don’t usually see things the same way and I needed to Mark this momentous occasion. Wink

Were they there to takeover the government? Seems like they would have had a lot more guns if that was the aim. Way way more. I have a hard time believing even the nuttiest of them thought there was going to be a government takeover of the country with the biggest military in the world by a motley crew from around the country. Some of them may have thought they could force a vote by Congress to throw out or audit the election, rather than just register their protest. Although the guy with the zip ties was apparently anticipating a hostage situation. Or maybe subduing the guards until a vote was forced.

The most obvious difference being that those people were protesting something that actually happened
