The Washington team has three free agents next season with very low cap space. I wonder which player will be lured away with a better contract.

Mystics have 14 games after the Olympic break. I fully expect to see EDD back for the final run and Meeseman likely. If this team can get close to .500 before the break, I see this team closing strong. With Tasha returning to form and Myisha playing out of her mind, getting close to .500 is certainly possible.

EGADS! Myisha and Tasha OUT? Down to SIX players? And the Mystics still win?

They HAVE TO bring in a player on hardship. But who?

I love this for Atkins so much. Such a breath of fresh air in what is otherwise a circle-jerk.

Ditto.
Great choice. (including for basketball reasons)

Washington Mystics: Stella Johnson – Waived
Washington Mystics: Kiara Leslie – Waived
Washington Mystics: Megan Gustafson – Waived

No long term confidence in Leslie is a little surprising since Thibault considered her a long term deal.

I suppose they’ll all re-sign on 7-day contracts.

Leslie could have bee a long term deal but, she seemed to miss a lot of time due to injuries.

Thank you very much for posting this! I was wondering if the guaranteed contract date also would have applied to Gustafson as a hardship player, and this answered it. It's interesting that Gustafson herself liked this IG post, so hopefully that means she'll be back soon...

That’s a great article that is clearer on key points than I’ve seen written around here.

Here’s my favorite part.
Quote:
Last season the team attempted a similar cost-cutting move with Shey Peddy, with the intent to re-sign her. Peddy decided to go to the Phoenix Mercury after getting released rather than come back to D.C.

Am I the only one to remember that it was Shey Peddy who knocked the Mystics out of the playoffs? Greatest moment of last year. Love it.
<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/WiCMmZPNiDE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Just goes to show that just because you can make a business move like this because it works for the team at the sacrifice of the player, it doesn’t mean it’s the best thing to do.

Particularly curious to see how SWK does. She was very effective off the bench in 2019--the problem was that in addition to Atkins, she had Toliver and Powers ahead of her in the rotation, the latter two of whom are no longer on the team. There is definitely an opportunity for her here.

So I'm on an Iowa message board trying to talk some sense into Megan fanatics who know even less than me about WNBA roster intricacies. Would any of y'all "in the know" mind letting me know if this is inaccurate, or how I could state this more accurately?:

"As expected, Megan is back with Washington on a 7 day contract. Teams can sign free agents to up to 3 such contracts for the remainder of the season. Washington will likely keep bringing Megan back until their regular roster is healthy again or someone better than her were to become suddenly available (which is unlikely). If they decide to keep her for more than 21 days (three 7 day contracts), they can offer her a prorated "rest of season" contract."

That's all accurate. Although this season, obviously, the second 7-day (if they signed her to it immediately after the first) would run into the Olympic break. So it might be a 7-day contract that lasts more like 41.

Mystics have accomplished a major goal - they're only 2 games under .500 and are virtually tied for 8th place. They've done this without former MVP EDD and former Finals MVP Meeseman. This is HUGE!

Now we'll see if we get EDD and/or Meeseman back in 30 days for the playoff push.

I'm so happy Shatori got the start in the Mystics' last game, as well as Tina's amazing performance.

Going into the Olympic break, the Mystics are in 8th (playoff) ONE game out of 5th place! They were fortunate to play fewer games than many teams have so have more space to make up the difference after the break.

We will definitely have
Tina Charles
Natasha Cloud
Ariel Atkins
Myisha Hines-Allen
Shatori Walker Kimbrough (we got back the player we had to give up to get Tina)
Theresa Plaisance
Sydney Weise
Leilani Mitchell
Shavonte Zellous

We will also have 2 or 3 of the following:
Elena Delle Donne
Emma Meeseman
Erica McCall
Megan Gustafson

Without Elena and Emma, we're a playoff team. With either of them, we are a team competing for the Championship.

We have Coach & GM Mike T and nobody else does.
