Statement from Belarus about not being able to assemble a team:
https://belarus.basketball/en/news-all/federation/fiba-women-s-basketball-world-cup-2022-belarusian-national-team-will-not-take-part-in-qualifying-tournament

Canada is probably the biggest beneficiary as they would have had a tough time in Osaka with their available players.

There are other players out there who still are not locks to be able to make it to their tournaments, including Maria Vadeeva.

Tickets link for the games in Washington DC

https://www.ticketmaster.com/promo/55j1k5

Streaming of the games appears to be on a streaming service, for pay.

It seems like some games are pay only and some are on YouTube, but that may vary by country.

Realistically, it seems like the only games that really matter are Brazil-South Korea and Nigeria-Mali, but I suppose those teams could pull upsets. Only Russia still has time to finalize a roster, but it looks like Vadeeva will not be able to clear in time. Brazil will be missing Dantas, no Roberson for South Korea, and Nigeria and Mali have about the strongest rosters that could have been reasonably expected for them.

There seem to be some games on YouTube, but most games on livebasketball.tv - for no obvious reason, with no clear pattern - but there's no way to pay for anything on livebasketball.tv (which is also shutting down in less than a week). So at least in some localities, the whole thing may be free, just via different websites? I dunno. It's a mess.

Belgrade Day 1:
http://www.womensbasketball247.com/2022/02/world-cup-qualifying-belgrade-tournaments-game-1-february-10th/

No surprise results, but South Korea did play Serbia quite close and Mali kept it respectable against France compared to Nigeria against China. Not sure what can be gleaned from Japan's overtime win over Canada.

Canada led by as much as 20 and was still leading by 18 with under 4 minutes left in the 3rd Qtr. They wilted under Japan's ball pressure. No one could handle the press except Nirra Fields, but she was also their #1 scoring option. They asked Fields to do too much and she ran out of gas at the end.

Both sides missed a lot of layups, but Japan somewhat rectify that situation at crunch time.

For what it's worth, I seem to be able to watch the livebasketball.tv games for free. I certainly haven't given them permission to charge my credit card for anything. Maybe having a login from years ago helps, or it's my locality, but give it a go if you want to watch the non-YouTube games live. You might get lucky.

I meant to ask this before this started but were Nneka, Chiney, and EWill not available, not allowed, or just chose not to play for Nigeria for this? Especially considering their quick try to get into the Olympics. Figured they’d want to start playing for their National Team if they could.

I think Fiba disallowed Nneka from playing for Nigeria because she had played previously for US. The others, I don't know about.

Chiney was allowed to play as a naturalised player for the Olympics, but was either never healthy or ultimately not selected. Nneka and Williams weren't allowed at all, due to their Team USA play. As far as I know nothing has changed since then.

Thanks. I thought that ruling was just for the Olympics and moving forward if they wanted to, then it would going to be okay. Thanks for the information.

I suspect that nothing less than the Olympics would make Chiney want to give up media opportunities. Also, it was never reported on much because she was not a WNBA player, but it is possible that Oderah Chidom is also in the boat where she can only play as naturalized since she also played for a USA youth team.

Either way, Nigeria was able to come back and beat France. China qualified with a fairly easy win over Mali in that group.

If anyone thinks that Chiney had any intention of ever playing for Nigeria, I have a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn. That was nothing but a publicity stunt from someone who absolutely loves attention. She can hardly clear her schedule to play in the WNBA, which she is paid for. It's comical that she threw her hissy fit to get to LA, Connecticut got better without her, and she's either sat out or sat on the bench "injured." For all the people that have bitched about Sue and Diana not leaving Team USA and giving others a chance, I hear crickets from those same people, calling for Chiney to just walk away and let someone else have a chance to play, who ya know, actually wants a roster spot.

She makes a mockery of being a professional athlete.

Blowing big leads seems to be the thing to do these last 2-3 days. Canada blew a 20 point lead to lose to Japan. France blew a 20 point lead to lose to Nigeria. Even in wins, people are giving up big leads. As I recall, the USA allowed Belgium to whittle a 22 point 4th Quarter lead down to 8 before winning by 9. China allowed Nigeria to slice a 29 point lead down to 14 at the end. Heck, it was even happening in the NCAAW as I watched LSU blow a 20 point lead to Georgia before bouncing back for the win. People are taking this idea that basketball is "a game of runs" too seriously.

Talbot just tossed for an disqualifying foul - elbow to the face with 2:13 left in the 2nd Quarter against Serbia.

Belgrade Game 2:

Mali-Nigeria will be the key remaining game unless Russia wants to lose to Puerto Rico now that South Korea and Serbia have joined China and France in qualifying.

Oof. After that draw, I wonder if Puerto Rico would even want to bother being 'TBD'. Not often you get such a glaring 'Group of Death' when there are only two freaking groups.

From an Opals POV Group B is not exactly looking like a walk in the park either tbh.

Well yeah, when there are only 12 teams in it the group was never going to be super-easy. But Nigeria are probably the worst team currently in the competition, Canada are shaky, Serbia are semi-rebuilding, France were a mess in their recent qualifying group, and even Japan are trying to work out what they are under a new coach. Plus Australia themselves, of course, are likely to be missing far and away their best player. Give me Group B eight days a week.

Regarding the Cambage-Opals situation, quoting this post from the Olympics section:

Thanks for moving the quote somewhere else Luuuc. I wasn't quite sure where it should go and just end up in the Olympics section with the Opals.

But yikes at that comment. O'Hea did not seem happy at all with how it went down and she certainly didn't hide it much.
