To me, the data on this disease are only partially reliable. We probably have decent data on the number of deaths and the number of confirmed cases by testing from most countries. However, the statistic no one can have is the total number of people who have contracted disease, and probably recovered, because they never had serious enough symptoms to be tested or because testing simply wasn't available to them.

I saw one guy interviewed from quarantine in Nebraska who said the symptoms were similar to a bad cold, and that he would have gone to work after taking off the one day he had a fever, had he not been mandatorily tested on a cruise ship. There could be thousands or tens of thousands of mildly infected like him, undetected and spreading the disease to a much wider scope than we think.

that is an informative map, pleasantly easy to manipulate.

and you're right about the data. what concerns me is the government's lack of preparedness and response after the fact.

we can get some real insights into the people we'll vote for by considering how they'd handle this, and i can't wait for the next debate.

the current administration says stay home (if called for), go to the doctor (if called for) - some seemingly obvious but not necessarily easy things to do for some people. kinda like, "you're on your own, and good luck with that."

i'd like to think that any of the 2020 democratic candidates, past or present, as president, would be tasking lieutenants with coming up with strategies to support people in this vulnerable time, instead of passively waiting for what will be months until a vaccine emerges, while that "stay home" thing will work for just a couple of weeks, if that. like federally declared free virus-related medical care and testing. like some unemployment-type formula to allay people's losses. for starters. a tall order, but nothing should go unexplored. oh, wait. is that too socialist?

Trump himself is said to be angry about his own administration’s response to the corona virus. I’m sure it’s like, “Somebody do something, already!” But we’ll see.

I think he delegates ACTION very well. For example, he wiped out ISIS rapidly because he removed from the military all of Obama's presidential reviews, personal drone strike approvals, and excessive rules of engagement, and just let the generals do whatever it took to win.

Laughing You really DO buy his bullshit, donchya? "He" wiped ISIS out? "He" has wiped out nothing but moral decency. A. Isis isn't 'wiped out'. B. "His" Generals do not all approve his decisions.

Fun interactive map. And yes. Only the tip of the iceberg is peeking out; that map will soon be solid red. However, mankind will survive, if only in an altered mode. Which is poetic karmic justice, no? We've done so much to destroy this earth as a species, maybe comeuppance shows itself in the most mysterious ways. We as a species are NOT so 'in control' as we think, are we!?

What role will the homeless population play in COVID-19?

And since their presence is at an all-time high in NYC subways, that will mean more victims. I have to take the subway to work Monday through Friday and it’s a real bitch having many several people in your personal space and bumping into you. Especially, when they don’t care enough to cover their mouths while yawning, sneezing and coughing.

I’m so ready to cut someone who compromises my health. Evil or Very Mad

Homeless people? Whatever do you mean? OUR economy is the strongest ever, under any president, ever. With record unemployment. There are still really 'homeless' people??

DiBlasio might as well agree with the Nazi-in-Chief because he act like their isn’t an epidemic in NYC since he moved into Gracie Mansion.

I have to wonder what the response would be to homeless people getting COVID-19. They certainly can’t “self-quarantine” in their home as we tell others who test positive and don’t require hospital care. But there isn’t any obvious place where they would put a COVID-19 homeless person. Some of them are mentally ill and will defecate on the street which will suddenly bother government employees and citizens a lot more than normal.

Italy has now put the worst parts of Northern Italy on lockdown so the issue of visiting and flying back to the USA without being stopped will shortly go away after those that have recently visited and gone elsewhere in Europe prior to the lockdown return home.

An attendee at a conservative conference (CPAC) that Trump spoke at has tested positive for COVID-19. The person had been near the head of the conference, and the head of the conference shook hands with Trump. Trump getting the virus would be something. They probably would try and not announce it.

Trump claims he will still hold rallys, but there are none on his calendar.

Two of the four cases in NH had traveled to Italy recently. The other two were in contact with the first two. Woulda been nice if Italy had locked air travel down sooner.

Generally speaking, I think the President has an obligation to keep himself healthy, including avoiding pandemics. There are several other high-ranking world leaders that have tested positive.

The military has set aside 1000 beds for quarantine at 4 different bases, although none are near NYC.

Made a quick trip to Mishawaka Sam's Club yesterday. Walking through the toilet paper section, there were some pallets of tp, however some brands were out. The ones that they did have weren't nearly as full as I usually see them. Usually they are almost to the top. Yesterday they were down to a layer or two at most.

Then I went to health and beauty. I saw NO hand sanitizer. Just an empty pallet. Again, usually almost full. These are half-gallon bottles!! (I buy my own gel for work because I don't like the foam that they supply. It seems to dry my hands out more.)

I did see several carts with a bundle of paper towels. I don't know if that is typical though because I'm usually not looking.

I need to go to the grocery store today. I'll make a trip down the tp and sanitizer aisles, just to see what the local reaction has been. So far, I'd say that there has been some panic buying. Especially since there has only been one diagnosed case in Indiana (that I've heard of) and it's over 100 miles away! I haven't paid too much attention to Michigan and the Chicago areas to know if they've had many cases.

Hand sanitizer is sold out everywhere, including Amazon. Amazon got slammed for allowing their vendors to sell single bottles of Purell for $400, but they sold out anyway. My grocery store has no sanitizer left for their entryway dispensers and none for sale. Their personnel, who may or may not know what they're talking about, said they don't expect to get any more Purell for weeks. There are instructions online for making your own sanitizer out of alcohol and aloe vera gel, but the latter is getting scarce too.

i sauntered into a bio/health food store and got my sanitizer and my gloves, because no one was thinking health food store, right? (the gloves, i just happened to be out of - i use them mostly for food prep.)

i've got about 3 weeks' worth of goods now, and i don't consider that a panicked state. i just don't wanna be among a pack of wolves if the day comes when everyone says at once, "oh, shit!"

The vibe in public and especially in stores in LA is completely unreal. The only thing that I can compare it to is the days, weeks, and months after the Northridge quake.

Down in Santa Monica, on a Saturday afternoon, the sidewalks were more sparsely populated than on say Christmas Day. But inside the stores, wow. There is literally a sense of impending doom. The tension and gloom is palpable to say the least and it’s like every step every person takes, every glance between strangers is wary and tense.

Hand sanitizer? Get real. All but stupid boutique expensive water brands are sold out. As far as most stock it’s all still pretty much there. People buying a lot of wine. So you have to know we’re not anywhere near as bad as it is going to get. But this is unpleasant to say the least. Not a happy place to be right now.

The grocery store I went to today had plenty of TP. I didn't see any hand sanitizer. Even the little wet-wipe things were gone.

Could hardly go down an aisle that there wasn't a display of cleaning products. Lysol, Chlorox etc. I don't know if that it to address this or just normal spring cleaning shoppers.

I agree with him 100%. There’s a difference between being informed, taking precautions and reveling in fear-induced panic. The panic is what I’m most fearful of. Whenever there’s a new pandemic, people rush to the ER in their hypochondriac hysteria which is what overwhelms our health systems, and the people who are actually ill (whether it be COVID-19, a heart attack, wounds, etc.) can’t get the care that they need. You can prep responsibly without hoarding, which is a huge issue right now. I was at the dentist the other day and the gloves they have are being rationed. In fact, they’re only allowed three boxes and have to find other suppliers to get the things they need, which is concerning. The people who need these things the most can’t get it because people are just panicking. Panic and mass hysteria will be our downfall, not this illness.

Very scary. Would like the CDC to have to respond to that due to the press repeatedly reporting on it and asking questions at news conferences.

I saw cellphone video from Wuhan China on YouTube where a nurse was sitting and hysterically screaming due to the tremendous pressure and horrible situation they were facing. At one point they wheel in some more patients from outside and a nurse says “why are you bringing more, we already have 3 bodies lying in the hallway”. I assume that meant “alive and untreated”.

penance is gingerly defying tripe by saying things tripe doesn't want him to say - the most recent, and without tripe's approval, pence signed off on the state department warning americans not to take cruises, despite tripe's resistance to warning against cruises and plane travel because it would hurt both industries.

is there a plot to blindside tripe with a new gop nominee?

Wow. That is some scary stuff. I'm going to have to re-think my response to this. I was kind of blowing it off as a total over-reaction by some people (the
"hoarders" and "profiteers"). I wasn't as stupid as Trump's total head-in-the-sand apprach. Somewhere between the two.
