Halep out in straight sets
It's the first time in the Open Era that the #1 seed has lost in the first round

Serena looked solid last night against Venus.

The women's draw is crazy. #1, #2, and #4 seeds out in the first three rounds. The tour is so deep with good players.

Serena is back in the finals. She'll face Naomi Osaka on Saturday.

I had to look up Osaka. She seemed to come out of nowhere despite being ranked #20. Some media reports are calling her American. She was born in Japan and her mother is Japanese and her father is Haitian.

She's lived in the US since she was three and is a US citizen

Ok. That explains it. Kind of like Sharapova being Russian/American

A game penalty for verbal abuse when she didn't even curse? That seems excessive.

I think that calling an umpire a thief qualifies as verbal abuse.
The fans are making asses of themselves at the beginning of the trophy presentation.
Props to Serena for the no more booing comments.
OMG!!!!!! Naomi say that everyone was cheering for Serena and then apologizes for the match ending the way that it did!
Can totally see that Serena thought that it was a thumbs up.

I'm a big Serena fan, but each one of those violations were deserved. You simply cannot keep going at ref like she was doing. That's going to get called in any sport.

Her coach admitted after the match that he was coaching her

Yes he did admit that.
But I don't think that she could probably see his hands. It was hard to see from the camera angle and that was more level with the coach. Serena would have been below that level and I doubt that she could see all of his hands. His thumbs were probably the only thing that she could see.

For years I have heard some of the top former players (Billie Jean King, Martina Navrotilova, Chrissie Evert, John McEnroe, etc) point out that virtually every coach coaches from the stands and that that silly rule needs to go away. It has been pointed out numerous times before that coaching is allowed during play in so many other sports and tennis is backwards in that regard. It's crazy that things escalated so quickly to have affairs ending up the way they did.
What is clear is that Naomi had outplayed Serena up to the point of the 3rd conduct violation, although Serena did break back and has such an outstanding reputation for turning things around. She could have come back in this match to win. Still, Naomi demonstrated openly that she is a new dominant force on the WTA scene and very much a champion in her own right.

I love Serena but Naomi Osaka was a badass today. It's a shame that the umpire problems (and yes, I put them on him) could overshadow that.

Osaka was up a set and a break at the time of the game penalty
