Jerry, Star Tribune

Senior guard Shannon Schonrock's voice is in mid-season form. Her
legs are not. And that was the whole point Saturday, when the
Gophers women's basketball season opened with a closed morning
practice and then a public scrimmage at Williams Arena.

Schonrock was held out of some drills as part of coach Pam Borton's
master plan to monitor practice time and game minutes for Schonrock
and Shannon Bolden, two seniors who played deep into March and
beyond during their first three seasons. The object is to keep both
starters and team leaders fresh later in the season.

"I might not be taking as many reps in practice," Schonrock
said, "but my voice will be heard."

So it was Saturday. As an observer, Schonrock provided advice to
freshman guard Emily Fox and sophomore Brittney Davis, who played
just three games last season because of illness and academic
ineligibility.

When Borton yelped, "Who's going to rebound?" -- a question the
Gophers will need to answer this season with big Janel McCarville
gone -- Schonrock poked her short head out from behind tall
sophomore forward Natasha Williams and spoke up, "Tash, you are."

Schonrock admits it's an "adjustment" to pull back. But she started
to learn to do that when she spent a good portion of last summer
with her foot in a protective boot to heal a tendon injury.

"They want to be on the floor every minute, every second," Borton
said of Bolden and Schonrock. "But they understand how important it
is be on the floor when it matters the most, not every second now."

Walking wounded

Borton introduced her team to fans who gathered by the hundreds and
ate concession-stand ice cream at 10 a.m., watched the scrimmage and
got autographs. When she introduced the three members of her
freshman class, only one -- Fox, a point guard from Colorado who has
the court vision and playmaking skills to break into the lineup this
season -- was healthy.

Forward Katie Ohm, Minnesota's all-time leading high-school scorer,
wore a protective boot on her foot because of a stress fracture.
Forward Ashley Ellis-Milan had her knee wrapped after twisting it
earlier in practice. Borton said both players need to be examined
further to determine how serious and prolonged their injuries might
be.

"I'm actually going to walk Emmy around campus everywhere she goes,
just to make sure she doesn't get hurt," Borton said.

First time out

Impressions from the 20-minute, running-time scrimmage that was long
on offense and short on defense: Sophomore forward Lauren Lacey
showed a nice scoring touch inside and out. Junior forward Liz
Podominick provided a shotblocking presence. Young guards Fox and
Davis showed quickness and spunk. And junior guard Kelly Roysland
slashed her way to the basket, an ability the Gophers need this
season.
