^The initial freekick shouldn't have been...A yellow card, no freekick, is the call in that situation, which would serve as a warning. A straight-up freekick inside the box? I don't even know if that's ever happened before mainly because it never gets to that stage. The referee would give a verbal warning first, then a yellow card if it happens again.

As for the penalty, her back was turned, she had to shield herself. That's what happens when you give a freekick at 10 feet. Should have been a no-call, keep it moving.

While that call was questionable, it evened out the no-call when two Canadians took down Wambach in the box earlier in the 2nd half (if you watched the game, you know that was a clear yellow, if not a red). The ref had some issues, but she had issues both ways, and I think over the course of the game she called it consistently, if not well.

As for hating Solo, two things: 1. I don't think Solo is as good as her reputation, and 2. My sister, who played keeper at the D1 level, has maintained since 2007 that Solo never should have set foot on another pitch wearing red, white, and blue, because her attack on Scurry was beyond the pale.

RED CARD that wasn't called. Any more whines from Team Canada?

I'm very disappointed in Christine Sinclair. She was amazing. No need to spoil that with her whining.

But, seriously this Tancredi red card no-call was the biggest miss of the game. Tancredi was all over the place on defense. Without her, the outcome would have been clearly USA even earlier. Team Canada was all spent and Tancredi was pure adrenaline.

It appears that Tancredi had to step over Lloyd and then step back slightly to nail her head. There could have been serious injury from that and there's no excuse, no matter how much adrenaline. It was similar to Laettner stepping on the chest of the fallen Kentucky player in the NCAA two decades ago. No excuse. He should have been ejected - and I'm a Duke fan. Tancredi should have been in the locker room for the end of that match.

Extra-time goal by Diana Matheson gives Canada the bronze, 1-0. Astounding that France didn't manage a score with all the chances they generated. Tremendous pressure...

Every time I see Canada's coach I think "What's Justin Bartha doing on the sideline?"

that was quite the finish. i agree, the french had *many* opportunities to score, but couldn't connect. CONGRATS, CANADA!

glad Canada got the bronze. it'll give them something positive for the future as they're hosting the 2015 Women's World Cup.

Wow, Japan with a couple of good chances. Let's hope that those are the last good looks they get.

No karma in football as the ref misses a US hand ball after penalizing Canada for one in the semi.

and if early reports are correct, this will be an Olympic record in terms of largest crowd. about 85,000 are expected(not quite a sell-out).
