With the recent passing of Kenny Rogers, it's worth noting that his signature song "The Gambler" was a cover. It was first recorded by 60's and 70's country star Bobby Bare:

Actually many of Rogers best known songs were covers:

Joan Jett has been mentioned several times in the thread, but on one has noted that her biggest hit was a cover

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/jUxsP8ED_cM" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

It was originally recorded by the Arrows in 1975

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/8AT_Pbtyid0" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Sadly Arrows lead singer and writer of the song, Alan Merrill, passed away from the effects of COVID-19 on March 29.

Also of note, the Blackhearts hit version was not even Jett's first recording of the song. She recorded it, backed by the Sex Pistols, in 1979.

I just enjoyed looking through this entire thread. While there are several ways to consider covers, my idea is to take a well known song and redo it, particularly in a different way. In that regard, Proud Mary was mentioned only once. This was a great song and a huge hit by CCR but was reimagined and made great again by Tina Turner.

A song that wasn't mentioned is Handy Man. Jimmy Jones version was a big hit in 1960 and completely reimagined by James Taylor a few years after it appeared in American Graffiti.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIyO15ZN7T8

But for pure fun, by far the greatest cover was of a song that was mentioned previously, Nilsson's Without You. The best known cover of Nilsson's cover was by Mariah Carey, but the cover of her rendition done on an international version is pure gold.

Remember this big hit from 1982?

Well, it's a cover of an Italian song from 1979

You probably kmow this Johnny Cash tune from 1996

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ov4epAJRPMw" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ov4epAJRPMw

You may even know it was a #1 country hit for Hank Snow in 1962

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/nwPDETH2Bn8" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwPDETH2Bn8

Probably only luuuc knows it was originally performed by Australian singer Lucky Starr in 1959 (with Aussie towns, of course)

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ZeadSspZDzM" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeadSspZDzM

The writer, Geoff Mack was also Australian. He wrote the American version using at Atlas, as he had never been to the Western Hemisphere.

Most likely, you heard Tina Turner's hit single of "What's Love Got To Do With It", but you probably never heard of this original by a British pop group called Bucks Fizz, who actually recorded this song just before Tina did. However, Tina's version was released to the public first, so Bucks Fizz shelved it until 2000, when it was included on a re-release of an older album.

Bucks Fizz had several hit singles in the U.K. in the early-1980's, but never made it big in the U.S.

I'm sure you remember this #1 hit from 1985

It's actually a cover, with an altered chorus, of this 1980 song

Holy cow. I remember when I came to LA the band I came out to play in tried to cover Take On Me... I think they wanted ME to sing it. lol. What a joke that was. But some people have no standards.

So when people think of Junior Walker they couldn't possibly think of him as being among the major talents of Motown. He had like one big hit with Shotgun in I think 1965 and another lesser hit with Roadrunner.

But later on he had two hit records that are favorites of mine. I think they're really interesting because they sound like they're from the mid-60s. I think that's all they could do with his sound and his talent. So the two songs, both from 1969, are What Does It Take which was the bigger hit of the two and a cover of the Guess Who's These Eyes. The irony of all this is that Motown apparently had a quality control meeting about What Does It Take and didn't want to release it as a single. I'm guessing there's something about the quality of the record they didn't feel was up to Motown's standards in 1969. I can understand that because the sound is, as I said, dated and dated is not what anyone wanted to be in 1969. But they released it and it was a huge hit.

I love the record and the mid-60s vibe and all that but it's the cover of These Eyes that is literally one of my favorite records and I think, despite it being recording by lesser Motown artist Junior Walker, is one of the most polished and gorgeous and evocative Motown recordings ever. I think the Funk Bros were GOING for mid-60s but with all the polish that they by 1969 had learned to put into a recording. The bass line by the legendary James Jamerson is just so beautiful. Just one of the really great records.

Last year, in support of Stacy Abrams' Fair Fight Action! PAC, alt-rock heroes Death Cab For Cutie recorded The Georgia EP. On it they covered songs by five Georgia artists (actually four, plus one Louisiana band whose lead singer briefly lived in Athens). In celebration of the results of the senate elections the band has now released the record across all streaming platforms. The most interesting of the covers is this one...

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/nWpBPaSkaBA" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Thankfully, they do not attempt Left Eye's verse

You all know this #1 hit by Whitney Houston

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/eH3giaIzONA" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

You probably don't know it was written and first recorded by a band named Boy Meets Girl

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/uSZP0c1pA1g" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Boy Meets Girl was also on Arista. Houston wanted to record it, so Clive Davis forced them to hold back their version until after her version hit. Their version is ok, but Shannon Rubicam is no Whitney Houston.

I am 100% certain that you know this #1 hit from 1975

It is, of course, a cover. It was co-written and first recorded by Neil Sedaka in 1972. Toni Tennille even acknowledges the original in the coda, adding the line "Sedaka is back".
