Elton John's Pinball Wizard was excellent. He also did a great cover of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

Just for the pure shock value, Joan Jett's cover of Love Is All Around (the Mary Tyler Moore Show theme song) was pretty impressive.

you want shock... listen to william shatners cover of "lucy in the sky"

Funny that nobody has mentioned maybe the two greatest covers ever:

These are truly great covers.

Best cover I heard this year was Mavis Staples doing Creedence Clearwater Revival's "Wrote a Song for Everyone"

The Band stole riffs from Creedence (and anyone else) on a regular basis.

I said Hurt previously, Johnny Cash, but I think that is the video more than the song.

My favorite cover song is probably, Sunday Morning Coming Down, Johnny Cash.

I like the history of it, and I like the song: KK literally woke up Sunday morning after a long night, went outside for a walk, came back to his domicile and wrote about what he saw, heard, smelled, and felt.

There is a line in there, "I'm wish'n lord that I was stoned". The show, network, that Johnny debuted the song on said he could not sing that line. He did it anyway.

My uncle loves "Meet Me on the Moon." "I Refuse to Be Lonely" is haunting. Especially, since it explains her feelings right before she took her own life. This song was her saying goodbye.

I love the Manilow penned "Somewhere In My Lifetime." Her voice was the ultimate tear.

2 more covers I bet ya didn't know were covers

Barenaked Ladies covering Bruce Cockburn's Lovers in a Dangerous Time

10,000 maniacs covering Patty Smith/Bruce Springsteen's Because the Night

From the Tori files, cuz I love my Strange Little Girls Smile

Tori's Acid Trip of a cover of Heart of Gold

Tori speak singing Eminem's 97 Bonnie and Clyde (sickening, yet entertaining, and that's the scary part)

The 12 minute Tori cover of Happiness is a Warm Gun by the Beatles.

And some personal Faves:

Nirvana's cover of David Bowie's The man who sold the world, creepy as hell.

Sarah Mclachlan's cover of XTC's dear god, the true anger at organized reliegon just shines through better than any other cover (Although Tricky's cover is pretty good, if strange)

I don't care if they're as cheezy as hell, UB40 kicks the ass of Elvis in Can't help falling in love.

Sonny and Cher covering "all I really wanna do is be friends with you" Originally Dylan then covered by the Byrds

Jose Feliciano soft covering Light My Fire by the Doors.

And even though it's only done live. Brian Wilson covering "Brian Wilson" by Barenaked Ladies

there is another original version of this (Carly wrote the lyrics, Michael McDonald the music), the Doobie Brothers. I've always been partial to Michael's voice:

It's not a cover - more a reimagining - but I love "Son of a Gun," the riff on "You're So Vain" that Janet and Carly Simon did a few year ago. Not the terrible remix that was on the radio, but the album version.

NO ONE can outdo ReRe. Nonetheless, En Vogue did a good job (even though ReRe is Queen).
