I recently discovered Cherrelle's "I didn't mean to turn you on." I grew up hearing the Robert Palmer version, which I still love. But I love Cherrelle's original, too. I didn't even know it existed, and I'm usually very knowledgeable about music.

Cherelle's music video of I Didn't Mean To Turn You On with King Kong break dancing is one of the best music videos of all time.

PEACE & LOVE GO MYSTICS!!!!!

Hurt - Covered by Johnny Cash

Quote:
'Hurt' is a song written by Trent Reznor, first released on Nine Inch Nails' 1994 album The Downward Spiral. In 2002, 'Hurt' was covered by Johnny Cash to critical acclaim; it was one of Cash's final hit releases before his death. Its accompanying video, featuring images from Cash's life and directed by Mark Romanek, was named the best video of the year by the Grammy Awards and CMA Awards, and the best video of all time by NME in July 2011. [1]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurt_%28Nine_Inch_Nails_song%29

Hurt plus the video made Cash a cult hero among a whole new young audience and cemented Cash's legendary status.

If I have one favorite record of all time it's 'Just My Imagination' by the Temptations. Amazingly. I actually also like the Babyface/Gwinith Paltrow version. Love her voice. Embarassed

I can't believe this version of "Gin and Juice" by The Gourds hasn't been mentioned yet.

Fun thread....many covers already noted make my list.

Generally speaking, any song Hendrix covered, qualifies. Whoever said SRV's cover of Voodoo Chile is better than the original is nuts. Smile

I'll add Stiff Little Fingers' cover of Marley's "Johnny Was". First time I heard it I was hanging out in Jersey and luckily had a tape rolling in my boom box while listening to some punk/alternative show on Princeton's radio station back in the early 80s.

That tape is somewhere in one of my long-ago-stored cassette racks- remember those cool wooden racks that held about 120 tapes?

I haven't been able to hear that particular studio version in more than a decade. I may have to organize a search party to find that treasure.

I've looked on youtube for it- no luck w/ that particular version, but I found a live one that closely resembles it. (I don't necessarily prefer studio
takes to live, but for this song, yes.) Production values are decent; the synch is slightly off.

So here is the closest version I can find. (I did find a CD on ebay that hopefully has the take I want. Years ago, in my quest to find it, I bought an LP which has one of the many different takes.)

Ladies and germs, SLF doing Johnny Was, live in Belfast, 1980:

It is tough to better Michael Jackson, but Esperanza Spalding does it here

Happy Christmas (War is Over). I do love John Lennon but I LOVE Sarah McLachlan's cover of that song.
