Why does Golden State have to wait 2 years? Seems like there is plenty of time for a 2024 launch, especially with Lacob and crew leading the way.

The Dream expansion was announced mid-October 2007 to begin play in 2008. They got it done, but it was a rush job that had the front office playing catch up for years. I would not recommend speeding through the process like that.

The Dream won conference titles in 2010, 2011, and 2013.

What standard did she stick to? Must play in NBA-sized arena?

I see 2025 and 2026 for expansion. The other bids are not moving the needle that much after lacob.

https://www.oregonlive.com/sports/2023/11/how-the-wnba-to-portland-plans-fell-apart-days-before-expected-announcement.html

Quote:
Among the issues that derailed the plans were a difference of opinion between Brown and the league over the team’s name and branding, sources said. One source said Brown wanted the team to be called the Rose City Royalty, while WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert was thought to be uncomfortable with the connotation.

Another issue was Brown’s ownership stake in Shoot 360, a basketball training center with locations across the country. A source said the WNBA saw that as a potential conflict of interest and wanted him to give up that investment, which Brown refused to do.

Who'd have thought the league might be trying to pull the wool over our eyes about the full reality of a situation? For, like, the 139486501386950138645th time.

It does make something of a mockery of their efforts to make out that they have viable options in countless cities around North America, though. If one place falls through and there's no viable second option other than waiting until 2027, then all those shortlists and long lists and discussions start to look like an awful lot of hot air.

I feel like the WNBA was putting all their eggs in one basket so to speak and pulled the trigger to early in telling other potential teams/cities no. If they were still talking to other places perhaps others might be willing to work with them and keep things moving, but being told a hard no doesn't make others want to be as willing to work with them when things fall through.

The reason for this feeling is the way it sounds the potential Oakland team played out and the way the media was talking it sounded like the WNBA was all in with Portland and there were no back up plans in case it didn't happen.

I’m not so sure. Oakland was never viable. That was a complete PR stunt through and through. The league was right not to take them seriously. The members of that group are now suing each other over the finances.

Also, they were very close with Toronto as well. It seems like they took Denver seriously. There’s no telling when any group was given the hard no but it’s also a difficult needle to thread.

That being said, I don’t think the lists of cities were indicative of interested ownership groups so much as places the league felt a team could thrive. Those shortlists were more akin to a call for proposals than anything else.

I’m disappointed with how the Portland bid was handled. I know Cathy is trying to set a high standard but some of the reasons coming out seem a bit absurd to be dealbreakers.

A $50 million fee for an expansion WNBA team? I remember something like 10-15 years ago, when it the going price was reportedly something like $10 million. I realize there is inflation, but still... Rolling Eyes

Franchise values have increased greatly since then

Given all it takes is one person to pull out (see what happened with Portland), not sure suing over finances now or whatever is going on is an indication it was just a stunt and the league was right to not take them seriously. Also given Alana Beard was part of the group I can't see her just joining as a PR move as she doesn't give off the indication she would make a move like this without doing her due diligence on the people she is getting involved with.

Franchise values have increased greatly since then

I did see this recently:

Quote:

Wade joins the franchise as a minority owner a month after the Sky welcomed a group of six women investors at an $85 million valuation, as first reported by Sportico—the second-highest in the league behind Seattle. The new owners announced in June acquired a 10% stake in the team.

https://sky.wnba.com/news/dwyane-wade-invests-in-wnbas-chicago-sky/

But I have never seen a value given for any sale since the claimed $10 million expansion franchise cost days. There have been 4 sales of teams since the 2000's with no announced dollar figure. I see transactions for other leagues having sale prices announced. If the WNBA franchises keep increasing in value why are they hiding the sale price?

Golden State Warriors Sell for Record $450 Million (2010)

The Los Angeles Clippers sold for $2 billion in 2014

The Shock were bought in 2010 from the Detroit Pistons.

The Sparks were sold in 2014 by the WNBA after the league had to take it back from the owner who could no longer fund the losses.

The Stars were sold in 2017 by the San Antonio Spurs to a Vegas casino.

The Liberty were sold in 2019 after being on the market since 2017 and the team saying that they had "lost money every year since its inception and cumulative losses exceed $100 million."

If the Liberty, in the largest market in the country, lost money in the 2010s playing in a NBA arena with the same ownership as the team, I am not sure how the value of a WNBA franchise went up so much.

I would think for the same reasons NBA franchises go up, increased fanbase/increased ad revenue, increased partnerships, increased ticket and merchandise sales, etc.

Look how much NBA franchise values have risen despite reportedly losing money

I'm quite happy to the the franchise fees going up to $50 million...and if another expansion team isn't announced until after the new media rights deal, Team 14 is going to be even higher. The thing with the expansion fee being at $50 million and possibly more, is it keeps out the riff raff like the Hilton Koch's of the world, which doomed the Houston Comets. He got the club in Les Alexander's divorce fallout for a song of about $10 million---and didn't have the money to operate it. With expansion fees at at least $50 million, the prospective owners are coming in with full pockets. This is a good thing for the league.

Thanks for posting story. I read it yesterday and clearly Howard has some league sources:)

Interesting take that Adam Silver would “get credit” for Golden State coming to fruition. I’m sure he made a phone call or 5, but as an outsider this expansion is all about timing and very much to Cathy’s credit. I’ve also heard she’s been impressive around the league offices and is rumored to be next in line for Silver’s job potentially. Imagine it’s um, rather political over there…

I’m choosing to be optimistic about Denver and Charlotte. If Cathy is being cautious, that’s fine. Sticking to the $50M fees and top tier arena access/readiness all sound good to me - I imagine there was some friction with the potential Portland group on a number of items (as reported) and it just didn’t pan out. IMO, Toronto would be great in the next round as well but that will be dependent on charter flights AKA the new media rights deal.

Can we just call it a day and revive the Comets?

My understanding is that Philly is out of the picture until the Sixers get the new arena they want sorted out. And that's *before* factoring in the $64,000 question of "is there an ownership group?"

Seen this?

6 cities the WNBA could still (technically) expand to if Portland is out

Am I wrong for being glad there won't be a team in the league called the Rose City Royalty? Very Happy

As one executive explained it: the financial realm the WNBA is now playing in gets the attention of even its richest owners. And $50 million in expansion fees disappearing is felt in a way franchise shifts even a few years ago simply weren’t.

That implies the franchise fee goes wholly or mostly to the teams. Which sounds like a good policy.
