There's no foreigner rule element reason why Fagbenle wouldn't have played for Cukurova, is there? She should just be a regular European as far as I know. Just wondering why she'd have played well for them at the weekend and then been left out on Wednesday, and hoping she's not hurt. |

No roster restrictions. They have not posted why she was not in the lineup. |

| With Chennedy Carter in the news today, there been something that I noticed recently. She had been listed in the lineup for the Carolina Giants in Puerto Rico for the past few games, but had not actually played. She was not listed in the lineup tonight. |

Yeah, from our perspective obviously desperately need her to be fit. Squad looks incredibly thin these days with the core aging out. No sign of Samuelson in this squad either, which is presumably good news for Kennedy Leonard, but probably not for our chances of winning.
We also probably need Hannah Jump more than Stanford do, but that's not going to get her on a plane for the qualifiers. |

Gotta love the GB Basketball press release pretending that it is a good thing that it such a domestic heavy roster when it means things like not having even the next level of players like Cheridene Green. It seemed pretty clear from Samuelson's club choice that she was not bothered about playing the last four games.
How does eligibility work exactly? Like can they call up Herbert Harrigan since Anguilla is not exactly a threat to field a team in anything any time soon? Or do you actually have to be eligible for England/Scotland/Wales? Has anyone ever figured out the story behind Sydney Wallace's UK passport? |

You usually know more about this stuff than I do. If Herbert Harrigan is playing under her GB passport at London Lions - which I imagine she has to be with Battle and Murray as their Americans - then I don't see why she wouldn't be eligible for GB. But then, I don't see why Green isn't in this current squad, for example. No idea on Wallace, either. My general theory on most of these players is that they like the benefits of the European passport, but don't actually want the hassle of showing up to play for Great Britain. Given the volume of complaints from the men's squad about the lack of money spent on their EuroBasket preparations and conditions this summer, maybe that's not a big surprise.
I've definitely read before that the reason Samuelson and Leonard can't both play together is that both fall in that 'got the passport after they turned 16 so count as naturalised' category. But Battle, Murray, Leonard and Herbert Harrigan have all been on the same Lions roster in Europe this season simultaneously, so MHH presumably doesn't fall into that category (unless FIBA changed a designation somewhere along the line).
Regardless, it's a shame that we so rarely put out anything like our best possible squad, even within FIBA's awkward rules. |

I tried to look for some rules on the situation, but all I could find was the reverse situation of what would allow a player not born in say the Turks or Caicos who could represent that national team. The terms UK passport and British passport seem to be used rather interchangeably, but it is not all that clear whether UK passport holders who would not be eligible for the England, Scotland, or Wales teams are allowed on the team (from the organization perspective and not the FIBA perspective) due to the weird way that GB Basketball was formed between the three existing federations. Given that Anguilla is not even a FIBA member, FIBA presumably just considers everyone there to have FIBA Europe citizenship.
From what I could find on Wallace when she first burst on the scene, I think all things being equal, she would lean towards representing Jamaica, but it feels like national team play can help out your club career a little bit. |

We're certainly a weird situation, and given they play as Great Britain at senior level the system makes very little sense - except for the people at England/Scotland/Wales Basketball organisations who want to maintain the existence of their jobs. I think GB Basketball would happily call up anyone with the passport that makes them eligible, including people from Caribbean islands who might want to represent someone else if it was the Commonwealth Games. But if the players don't really want to bother, it does give them a bit more of an excuse than just "nah, don't feel like it".
And yes, GB and UK tend to be used as interchangeable terms, even in places where that's unhelpful. I imagine a lot of people, even over here, would struggle to explain the difference between them. |
