An excellent article from SEC correspondent Gabriella Lewis! A look at all the SEC WBB teams for 2022-2023

https://www.thenexthoops.com/ncaaw/2022-23-sec-preview-south-carolina-tennessee/?fbclid=IwAR0iWRgdx09Q0xW_ZfqkZpvkhBtdWgvSjzAH2TpMhOr-KLam0B3Z0vZ19aQ

I like this bit (grin)

"To me, there are three extremely promising teams in the SEC that are all on the precipice of something truly special: Georgia, LSU, and Florida."

SEC Coaches voting on predictions and preseason All SEC Teams

South Carolina is predicted to win the 2023 Southeastern Conference women's basketball championship in a vote of the league's coaches.

South Carolina tops the order of finish, with Tennessee, LSU, Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi State and Florida rounding out the top half the league. Ole Miss, Georgia, Kentucky, Texas A&M, Missouri, Auburn and Vanderbilt round out the bottom half.

South Carolina's Aliyah Boston was voted as SEC Women's Basketball Preseason Player of the Year. LSU's Angel Reese also received votes.

Joining Boston and Reese on the All-SEC Preseason First Team are Brittany Davis, Alabama; Alexis Morris, LSU; Anastasia Hayes, Mississippi State; Zia Cooke, South Carolina; Jordan Horston, Tennessee and Tamari Key, Tennessee.

The Preseason Second Team All-SEC is comprised of Makayla Daniels, Arkansas; Aicha Coulibaly, Auburn; Diamond Battles, Georgia; Madison Scott, Ole Miss; Jessika Carter, Mississippi State; Hayley Frank, Missouri; Victaria Saxton, South Carolina and Rickea Jackson, Tennessee.

Coaches cannot vote for their own team or players and ties are not broken.

The 2023 season officially tips on Monday, November 7.

The media poll has the same top 3 and same bottom 4 but 4-10 is all over the place. Coaches picked Alabama 4th and media picked them at 10. Averaging them out, it looks like this:
4. Arkansas
5t. Florida
5t. Ole Miss
7t. Alabama
7t. Mississippi State
9. Kentucky
10. Georgia

Kind surprised to see Georgia this low after all the love they’ve gotten from other media outlets.

I'm betting on Coach Abe to pull Georgia higher than 10 this year - the chemistry of the UCF and other portal additions with the 5 left from last year is good.

I cannnnnnnot wait to see an Abe coached team play South Carolina and Tennessee. Her style of play was made for the SEC.

I found Vanderbilt's quantum leap a little bit optimistic, but then....I don't even try to figure the SEC out. They've got to be THE toughest conference to predict accurately. Razz

Yeah, you and me both. I guess somebody thinks that just because Shea is coaching them, they're going to miraculously improve. Not.

Tennessee played at UCF the 2nd game of the season last year, winning 49-41. The teams shot a combined 30.5% from the floor and committed 52 turnovers between them. Horston had a triple double, but in a bad way (14 points, 11 boards, 11 turnovers).

I mean, they did get voted dead last in both the Media and Coaches Poll. This WER group that voted Vanderbilt at 8 also has Alabama's Brittney Davis as the pre-season JC Transfer of the Year...she has been at Alabama since 2019-2020. They CLEARLY know what they are talking about.

So now that we're well into the conference schedules, the Southeastern Conference appears to be slightly weaker than in seasons past. Other WBB conferences - such as the Big East or American Athletic - who were clearly in the rear-view mirror in seasons past, are now almost looking the SEC straight in the eyes. But, are they really?

The Strength of Schedule (SOS) for both conferences rank out like this, as of 2:00 pm on January 11th, 2023:

Strength of Schedule (SOS):

Connecticut (BE): 1st
Creighton (BE): 2nd
Tennessee (SEC): 3rd
Marquette (BE): 8th
Texas A&M (SEC): 13th
South Carolina (SEC): 20th
Villanova (BE): 22nd
Alabama (SEC): 26th
Arkansas (SEC): 31st
Vanderbilt (SEC): 37th
DePaul (BE): 47th
Butler (BE): 58th
Georgia (SEC): 61st
Missouri (SEC): 62nd
Auburn (SEC): 63rd
Seton Hall (BE): 69th
Kentucky (SEC): 95th
Saint John's (BE): 102nd
Xavier (BE): 134th
Providence (BE): 136th
Georgetown (BE): 148th
Mississippi State (SEC): 154th
Florida (SEC): 155th
Mississippi (SEC): 159th
Louisiana State (SEC): 199th

For the SEC, teams like South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas A&M are near their regular positions at the top, from recent seasons. Kentucky and fallen off substantially, and Georgia has also fallen out of the top 25-30 where it's regularly been under Joni Taylor. LSU, which was 3rd in 2020-21, then 43rd under Mulkey's first year as head coach last season, has leaped far off of the radar with her first full scheduling effort at the commander's helm. Mississippi State has also fallen well out of the top 100, when they were regularly in the top 50 under Schaefer.

And for the Big East, Creighton must fell really good about their roster, as they've gone from 56th in 2020-21, to 41st in 21-22, to 2nd thus far this season. Marquette as well - going from 109th in 20-21, to 81st in 21-22, to now 8th. Villanova too: from 82nd in 20-21, to 68th in 21-22, to now 22nd. CT is at its regular place at the top of these rankings, but now its getting some help in hoisting up the conference load when it comes to SOS.

AT RealtimeRPI.com, they have the Big East ranked 3rd in conference SOS thus far, with the SEC ranked 5th, just behind the Pac-12 at 4th. This after the SEC was ranked 1st overall in SOS the past 2 seasons, and the BE ranked 7th in each as well. There's still a lot of conference games to be played before the regular season commences: Warren Nolan ranked the SEC #1 in NET rankings, and the BE #8, but I don't think there'll be much movement in each conference's rankings the rest of the way, as there is too closely matched rankings between the member teams in both leagues. Like teams playing against like teams, so to speak.

So then, how do we quantify which conference is the better conference, if the teams in each are playing against similarly strong schedules?

So then I complied the statistical rankings for each teams of both conferences, playing against those equally strong schedules, and the results were interesting:

Some people say that statistical data is Satan's native language, because they can make you see what you want to see in them, no matter what they say. And when arguing statistical data, one can find the basis for their side in them every time.

DEFENSE:

But the above stats to me paint a very real and consistent picture. For the Southeastern Conference, the defensive statistics are clearly in their favor: Scoring Defense shows 6 SEC teams in the top 50 national rankings, while the Big East only has 1 team. FG % Defense is 5-1 in the SEC's favor. 3-pt. FG % is 6-1 in the SEC's favor.

Other defensive-based statistics are equally one-sided: Rebounds per Game is 6-2 for SEC; Blocks per Game is 6-3 for SEC; Steals per game shows 5 SEC teams in the top 50 nationally, with 0 BE teams there; Turnovers Forced per Game is 3-0 for the SEC.

Everyone should know by now if they follow WCBB that the Southeastern Conference is a physical, athletic conference. Teams are full of big bruisers in the post, while quick, attacking, reaching guards patrol the perimeter. And they deploy that athleticism regularly as part of their game strategies.

But the above statistics would imply that the Big East is NOT that kind of physical league. They do not attack opponents incessantly. And that lesser degree of physicality results in obvious other statistical results, as a consequence:

In Assists per Game, the Big East leads in this category - albeit only slightly - 4 to 3. In Turnovers per Game, they lead 4-2. So in Assists/Turnovers per Game, they also lead here big, 6-2.

The Big East plays a cleaner, more wide-open style of game that's more like All-Star games, than dirtier, scrum-based rivalry games. Apparently, they look to beat their opponents by out-scoring them, or out-efficiencing them.

But then, that would indicate that while the SEC is a defense-based league, then that makes the Big East an OFFENSE-based league? Does it? Well, lets see:

OFFENSE:

In Scoring OFFENSE, it is the SEC that leads the Big East, 4 to 2 in the top national 50th ranked teams. In FG Percentage, one would think the Big East would have the cleaner, purer, more wide-open free scoring opportunities, and thus easily lead this category, but AGAIN it is the SEC who leads, 6 teams to 3. One would think such physical, brawling, ugly paint-scrumming teams would struggle mightily in hitting higher % of shot attempts, but the stats do not support that.

In 3-pt. FG %, the Big East makes their best case here, looking the SEC eyeball-to-eyeball 4 teams to 4. But then, why isn't the 3-pt. FG % Defense tied up? It is 5-1 in the SEC's favor.

In Fouls Per Game, that stat strongly supports this theory. It had the Big East WELL in front here, 6 teams to only 1 SEC team in the top 50. That's a reverse stat: it means FEWEST Fouls per game, not the most. So again, that supports the BE in being a conference that DOES NOT BY DESIGN play with an attacking, aggressive physicality. It is usually that kind of physicality that results in fouls being called. The Big East DOES NOT foul.

That physicality also can be a prime cause for teams having turnovers. A bit of wildness, of a lack of discipline as they try so hard to attack their opponents. And the Big East leads in this category, with 4 BE teams in the top 50 with the FEWEST turnovers per game, compared to only 2 SEC teams being there. But that physicality can also cause turnovers to be committed by the opposing teams as well, and the SEC has 3 teams in the top 50 in forcing turnovers, to the BE having none. Again, more proof that the Big East as a conference is NOT so strongly based on hard, physical defense. And also proof that the SEC is.

So, in the purely OFFENSIVE-minded statistics - Scoring Offense, FG %, 3-pt. FG %, Assists per Game, Assists/Turnovers per Game, it is tied 2-2-1, with the SEC leading in Scoring Offense, in FG %, and tying the Big East in 3-pt. FG %, and the BE leading in Assists per Game, and Assists/Turnovers per Game.

In the purely DEFENSIVE-minded stats - Scoring Defense, FG % Defense, 3-pt. FG % Defense - the SEC leads all 3 and by huge numbers: 6-1, 5-1, and 6-1. In other strong defensive-relative stats such as rebounds, blocks, steals, and turnovers forced per game, the SEC is a slam dunk in these, going 6-2, 6-3, 5-0, and 3-0 respectively.

Finally, statistical categories that perhaps would give indication of the "ugly" factor of playing games with a high degree of physicality and aggressive defense - fouls and turnovers per game - the Big East wins both easily, 6-1 and 4-2 respectively.

But in overall analysis, it is the Southeastern Conference that takes the edge here, as defensively they are heads and shoulders above the Big East as a conference. But offensively the Big East does not pull away from the SEC: in fact, one could say - looking at the statistics - that the SEC as a league is a BETTER league offensively than the BE is. Even in a season, where the SEC appears down from its regular lofty stature in terms of SOS, and the Big East appears to have one of its stronger SOS in recent memory. We still have a large chunk of regular season left to play however. Let's see how it all plays out.......

No real changes to the results - the 3-pt. FG % goes from being tied 4-4 to the Big East taking the edge by 1, 6-5. Other categories where the BE wasn't present, got a member or two, but they still trail the SEC by substantial numbers in those.....

I know LSU is undefeated, currently ranked #3 in the coaches poll and are #1 in the SEC standings (tied with S. Carolina and Tenn.) but are they really that impressive? I admit I have not watched any of their games and of the top 6-8 ranked teams I follow LSU the least so I'm curious to hear what LSU WBB fans and others think.

I like to watch them just to see Angel Reese. Flau'jae Johnson is also pretty terrific for a freshman. And the other starters are talented, too. I'd be a bit shocked if S. Carolina loses to them. And TN might take 'em down, too. But they're definitely deserving of Top Ten ranking, imo.

What might be revealing is a ranking of the budgets for wcbb among the teams of the two conferences.
