Well the COlumbia game was ugly. USA girls had trouble making layups. I think the refs were also allowing a lot of contact and maybe that bothered them.
I didn't find a box, but Columbia shot...and missed a bazillion threes.

The first half was not too inspired, but the result was fine:

My thoughts on a few of the players. I don't know their histories so this is just based on watching parts of these first three games. The opponents haven't been anything like the college teams they will face next Fall so that makes it more difficult to predict.

Brady(UConn): very consistent. has bulk for a center. hits layups but seems limited in terms of movement. I would have liked to see more rebounds from this type of player.

McMahon (OhSU): she looks like the player most ready for the next level to me. A really good rebounding wing with a handle and good instincts. Unfortunately she's terrible at FTs since she drives and gets lots of them.

Rice (UCLA): obviously highly touted, but she will have a learning curve. Hasn't shown that she can shoot the three. She drives in and mostly looks for her own shot and since she's in traffic, it often isn't there. She does sometimes make nice passes to the bigs - especially Brady. I expected to be more impressed.

Jones (UCLA) tiny. but that may just because her teammates are all way taller. She should eventually be a good sidekick for Rice at UCLA. But here, she was almost invisible.

Van Slooten (Ore): A somewhat scrawny big who likes to float around more toward the perimeter. Considering that, she had a good nose for rebounds.

Those were the starters. Most of the players got close to 20 minutes, starters and benchers both, partially because two players were out on covid protocol and partially because the games were not competitive. Of the rest:

Del Rosario: (2023 grad) At 6'5, she stood out. Quite mobile, good hands, good nose for the ball. Got more than 10 rebounds per game in her 20 minutes which was impressive. I'd love to have this girl on my team.

Nivar (Stanford) Mostly I watched her since she will be an important piece of the puzzle next year for Stanford. Seems to be a good rebounding guard but kind of nondescript - not flashy. I may not have noticed her if I hadn't specifically been looking.

This was kind of the opposite of a typical game, starting on fire and then kind of sputtering in the second half:

anyone else watching any of these games? They play Brazil in the semis at 2 PDT today.

McMahon continued to look the most impressive yesterday in a win against Mexico. She has a nice all around game. Ohio State is getting a good 'un.

I am not sure what the implications are for next summer, but the final performance against a good, but not great Canada team does not feel like a nice sign:

What are you implying about next summer?

I didn't get to see this one. Will have to go back and watch the tape. Interesting that Todd from Canada is on the all-tournament team. It appears she's headed to Boston College.

I would expect changes on the roster front among all the players who were not the top players for this team. Had they somehow lost, a coaching change may have happened too. Struggles at this level have been few and far between. USA Basketball is going to want to make sure that everything is ironed out before next year when there will presumably be a few other worthy competitors on the world stage.

Looking at the last 2 rosters for this tournament the U19 World Cup it seems there is always a significant roster change. From 2016 to 2017 there are 7 players that are different and from 2018 to 2019 there are 8 roster changes. While there will probably be some significant roster changes for next years team, not sure if the results from this tournament will matter as much as different people will just stand out in the trials.

to me, it looked like the one thing they really missed was reliable three shooting. If they can add a couple of good outside shooters, they should be much better.

Realistically though, Rice, Brady, and McMahon are the only ones I would say are sure things (barring injury) for next year.
