Nika Muhl in 17 minutes outrebounded Cameron Brink in 27 minutes.
The Hull twins were held to 7 points in 77 minutes. Is that a record low? |

Mostly, quite well-played by both. A few *little things* made all the differences needed. Stanford's MIA threes - when's the last time they shot it that poorly and won? I was very impressed by their defense. They were well prepped for that. I think Belibi should be a bigger force, please. I hope Tara has Fran in her sights for some systematic improvement pursuits in the off-season.
Kudos to UConn. I always get a kick out of how you Husky fans kvetch 'n moan about this one and that one, all season, and then....they're magically better. And not that your kvetching is always misplaced - you've grown accustomed to posts like Charles and Dolson, and the myriad of guards, so an ONO or a Williams may disappoint. But they pulled it out tonight!

UConn won because Stanford absolutely sucked from 3, miracle #1, and they made 15-17 FTs in the 4th quarter, miracle #2.
That's about it, imo.
Gotta play better in the final.

Much better. South Carolina doesn't need to hit threes to win. They shot 28% from beyond the arc when the teams met in November.
The Hussies were good from the line in that game too.

None mattered though, unlike last Friday.

Rewatched the game, which increased my appreciation for Haley "Rapunzel" Jones, who doesn't need ball screens to score but can just create shots on her own, one-one-one-or-more. She can do this in significant part because she can do a simple thing that most modern and post-modern post players can't: a hook shot.
Jones can hook ambidextrously from the low block, off a drive, or off a spin-move drive. And she can vary the level of her hook release from an overhand teardrop loft to an underhand scoop.
If Jones only had a three-point shot . . . . |

Oh, she's got one....she hit three of 'em in one game (v. Utah) last month. But then -- she doesn't.
If you like hook shots, do you remember Brooke the Hook Smith from Stanford? Now THAT was a hook shot.

Indeed, I do. Smith had the best repertoire of back-to-the basket low post moves I've ever seen in a WBB player—not only ambidextrous classical hooks, but ambidextrous drop steps, up-and-unders, reverse up-and-unders, etc. |
