UPSET = Any lower seed winning
BIG UPSET = Upset in which the teams are more than four seeds apart
CLOSE GAME = Any game decided by single digits or in OT
BLOWOUT = Any game decided by 20+ points

I would like to propose that these tournament comparisons be between multiple years of the women's tournament rather than the men's. If I recall correctly, you do that at the end of the tournament with the totals, but I would personally rather see the women's tournament compared to other women's tournaments.

Note that the seven big upsets matches the women's tournament record set in 1998

So Creighton needs to beat S. Carolina today to create a new record.

One thing I'm wondering is how do the PPG compare to previous years. These seem like defensive battles -- in both the men's and women's tourneys. The PPG is almost the same but it seems low in both.

We're actually up a little over last year's 65.9. The record high is 75.0 set in 1988. The record low was 63.1 set in 2007. Median is 69.5.

The men's 69.2 is also up slightly. They were 69.1 last year. The record high was 84.5, set in 1970. The record low is 39.4, set in 1940. Median is 71.0.

Thanks for the info.

Those 1970 numbers are almost startling -- that's no shot clock and no three point shot. There was some serious offense being played there.

Every game in the Mideast Regional saw at least one of the two teams score 100 points or more. I didn't include the third place regional games, which would have raised the average.

Four of the five highest scoring men's tournaments came in the 1970's. 15 of the top 20 are pre-shot clock, 16 of 20 are pre-three pointer. The most recent to crack the top 20 was 1992.

The women's tournament is similar. The top eight highest scoring tournaments are all 1992 and earlier.

History of the women's tournament

Record highs in Big Upsets and Close Games. Fewest Blowouts since 2015. Scoring up a touch but still towards the low end. Fewest 100 point games since 2016.
