https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2021/05/wnba-ratings-opening-weekend-nine-year-high-abc/
The WNBA scored two of its three largest regular season audiences in the past nine years with Saturday’s opening weekend ABC doubleheader.
Saturday’s Sky-Mystics WNBA regular season game averaged a 0.39 rating and 611,000 viewers on ABC, marking the league’s largest regular season audience in nine years — since Lynx-Mercury on the opening weekend of the 2012 season, also on ABC (804K). The previous high was 599,000 for a Wings-Mercury game on ABC last summer.
Chicago’s win, which marked the Sky debut of F Candace Parker, ranks as the most-watched WNBA game of any kind since the 2018 All-Star Game (709K) and topped every WNBA Finals game since Game 5 of the 2017 series (902K). Last year’s top Finals game, Seattle’s clinching Game 3 win over Las Vegas, averaged 570,000 on ESPN.
Later in the day, a rematch of that Storm-Aces final averaged a 0.39 and 598,000 on ABC — the league’s third-largest regular season audience since 2012. The average of 605,000 for Saturday’s doubleheader surpassed last year’s opening weekend games by 25%. Last year’s opening weekend took place in late July and included Sparks-Mercury (540K) and Sky-Aces (432K) on ABC.

The usual ratings site stopped having them, but SpoilerTV apparently bit the bullet and subscribed to some.
Here are some numbers from the season so far:
6/1 Phoenix-Chicago ESPN 158,000
6/20 New York-Los Angeles ESPN 151,000
6/27 Seattle-Las Vegas ESPN 338,000
6/29 Connecticut-Washington ESPN2 124,000
7/4 Atlanta-Las Vegas NBATV 62,000
7/4 Seattle-Los Angeles NBATV 62,000
7/7 Dallas-Minnesota ESPN2 130,000
7/9 Seattle-Phoenix ESPN 221,000
7/14 All Star Game ESPN 470,000
Numbers are average viewership as estimated by Nielsen's sample. |

Pretty horrible compared to the other ABC games, which is what you get when you counter-program against the NFL's opening day. There may not be a 100% fan crossover, but it's clearly enough to make a big impact. |

That's also a very lackluster matchup, to be fair.

On an NFL Sunday, that's nothing short of miraculous.

How rare is is for the 10pm game of a double header to draw a bigger number? I know it's only a small increase but I'm so used to seeing theb10pm game plummet to the low 100s that this is really impressive. Maybe the competitiveness of the game helped keep and draw in viewers.

CBS or CBS Sports Network? Would be unusual to have a contract with two broadcast networks, but maybe it works because neither makes a full weekly commitment to broadcasting the games.

They air a few games on regular CBS now too. A game on CBS Sports Network would never have that high of a rating. Have we ever gotten any numbers on the CBSSN games? They're probably comparable to the NBATV numbers and under 100k.

I feel like CBS Sports Network doesn't even have a big enough market share to pull a number that high.

You can pick up CW with rabbit ears; you have to pay for ESPN2.

It might be mildly unusual for WNBA games, but it really is not a surprise based on game and fanbases. In other contexts, it is expected, especially during Daylight Savings Time (when more people use their television during the 10pm hour local than 8pm hour local). It is enough of a problem for the NBA that they keep trying to figure out new ways to get people to watch the first games of their doubleheaders.

CBS does not pay for CBSSN to get rated so their numbers are not available. |

The people who run Showbuzzdaily are not sports people so they often miss broadcast network sporting events. I would assume that somebody else would publicize the viewership for the ABC game at some point. |

9/28 Chicago-Connecticut ESPN2 399,000
9/28 Phoenix-Las Vegas ESPN2 298,000
The first game rated well enough that we have more demographic information. On average, this was the percentage of each group in the sample that was watching:
18-49: .12
F18-49: 09
M18-49: .16
18-34: .08
F12-34: .06
M12-34: .07
25-54: .14
50+: .20 |

400k for an ESPN2 game is very impressive. The second game is also an impressive number for the Deuce. I'm always anticipating low 200s or worse for ESPN2 games.
