God it sucks to be a fan of a league where you have 8 dressed players on opening night.
It's the beginning of the season blues. How you finish is more important than how you begin.🤓

Diggins-Smith/Peddy
Taurasi/Thomas
Cunningham
Charles
Anigwe/Gustafson

Those are your eight. I presume they could add hardships if they wanted but Turner and DeShields both just finished in Italy, so they may not bother.

LOL. Tina bailed on the Mystics in part due to the number of players who didn't suit up. Out of the frying pan, into the fire. And yes, it was really poor form for her to blast it to the media.

LOL. Tina totally should have known BG would be detained in Russia.

DeShields and Turner have reported. Cannon and Simms terminated from their hardship contracts

Can we afford McCoughtry with Griner hardship? I’m incompetent when it comes to this stuff.

The league hasn't been wildly clear about exactly what they've granted Phoenix, but as far as I understand it no they aren't in a position to claim her off waivers. But if she cleared they could cut one of their non-guaranteed vets and sign her to the vet minimum.

I think the point to McCoughtry leaving Minnesota is that she’s not healthy enough to play. That’s probably the biggest thing anyway. Other reason could be she has a lot of non-basketball stuff going on.

More context on Phoenix's situation. This is from the news division of Arizona PBS: https://cronkitenews.azpbs.org/2022/05/20/phoenix-mercury-skylar-diggins-smith-absence-diana-taurasi-disagreement-fight/

Oof. I don't know. They swing for the fences with free agency to stack the roster and, it ain't working. Even without BG, this is a starting roster that should still be competitive. DT has been hit or miss for the last few seasons and only seems to play with any fire when her back is against the wall. Tina does not look like the MVP candidate from last year. Turner isn't as electro as she had been the last few seasons. Obviously, the BG situation takes a toll.

This season may end up being a wash. If that's the case, I think DT needs to bow out. Either build around Diggins Smith and BG (if she is able to return) or they may need to blow it up and trade for picks to rebuild and join the ranks of the Dallas, Indily and Atlanta's of the league.

* Get Peddy/Sophie back.
* Cut 2-3 players (Thomas, Anigwe, Samuelson)
* Sign 2-3 players (????)
* There needs to be a team meeting...or at least a meeting between SDS/DT
* Stop taking so many quick shots.
* Stop taking so many contested long 2 point shots
* Focus on getting more paint touches from post-ups (Tina) or penetration (SDS, DD)
* Play at a slower pace...Tina and DT have a lot of wear and tear on their bodies.
* More energy on defense

Also, I'm tired of people saying Phoenix has 3 Olympians...DT/TC are past their prime.

Something that keeps popping up in my head is DT saying...paraphrasing...."We know our roles...I'm gonna get mine on the outside, Skylar's going to get here in the middle and BG is going to get hers in the paint".....Well, Phoenix is missing their paint offense and defense

Sounds like you should be on the Merc's coaching staff Laughing I agree with all of the asterisk points.

As for the bolded, therein lies the problem. Tina is jacking up 3's and jumpers instead of posting up and her defense is pretty much nonexistent. I don't care about her age either, if Lil Syl can still bang around the post, then Charles needs to park her butt on the block too!

Tina’s gonna do whatever the hell she wants - which will include bitching about teammates and coaches. Tina is not gonna do what the team needs her to do but will complain about “the culture.” She does not care who is missing from the team - she expects coaches to pull rabbits out of hats to get her a championship. Tina is all about Tina and what she thinks she deserves. Don’t hold your breath expecting anything more.

Congrats to MVP of the world Penny Fucking Taylor ❤️

I was gonna be a fan of whatever team DT joined, as a basketball fan, I’m grateful if was a team Taylor was on. (I suspect Diana feels the same way 🤣) she’s one of the best players ever, and I’m glad she’s recognized as such. She should be in the basketball hall of fame too.

Penny gave a good speech. Pleaded for Griner's release. Made a funny joke about Taurasi. Mentioned all her W coaches but singled out Dan Hughes. Talked about the Opals and managed to admonish Cambage without mentioning her name.
