Nygaard returned to the WNBA last season as an assistant with the Aces, who recently replaced head coach Bill Laimbeer with Becky Hammon. Nygaard also has coached Team USA youth teams in 2017 (U16 FIBA Americas) and 2018 (U17 FIBA World Cup).
The Mercury were impressed with Nygaard’s ability to break down X’s and O’s for Phoenix, a star-studded team led by Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner that lost in the WNBA Finals last season. Nygaard has already spoken with multiple players on the current roster, sources say. |

Yeah but can she handle DT’s cut throat mindset. Can’t imagine Diana not being the coach on the floor and in the front office like Sue bird and Noelle Quinn.

Hartley needs to concerned with getting better and back to herself before this new coach gives her a reason too …she’s disgustingly overpaid and definitely has not made the impact expected injury or not rehab is apart of getting paid and I don’t know her process but it was one to many years tooooo long to comeback the way she did last season.

Bria was on a mandated restriction. Sandy and BG both said this. She was coming back from three injuries and two surgeries. They want her fully healthy. Her numbers in the bubble spoke for themselves and she outplayed Skylar, BG and DT when she was healthy at that time.

Well, at least I don’t have to soften my stance on the Mercury.

Like I said before, in my opinion, Nygaard is simply a pliable puppet approved by and for DT and SDS. These two will be in charge for the most part, especially in calling plays or getting plays called that they agree with at crucial times in games. Previously, these plays and such were designed and called by the Head Coach which visibly displeased and distastefully disagreed with DT for which she openly criticized the Head Coach when the plays didn't work and especially when she wasn't the primary go to player.
IMO, Spoon and the others wouldn't go along with the "puppet" protocol which they knew was expected. I understand their actions and applaud them for their integrity.
That's my take on it and I accept that YMMV. Either way, Phoenix will be a force to be reckoned with in 2022.

Why did Phoenix keep their best and franchise player in Hartley out of the loop when she didn’t know her coach was going to be?

Oh yes, this was a straight puppet hire. When I saw the name I was like who??? Coached a high school team - 1 yr under Lambieer.
Spoon and the others wouldn't go along with the "puppet" protocol - especially her.
Will see what it looks like in the coming months

Or..once T-Spoon was no longer interested, they went with the cheapest option because the Sun/Merc might be up for sale soon.
I'm good with not going with a retread. The coaches that were fired, were fired for a reason..although personally I would have preferred the candidate that's an assistant with the G league.

She's not just some random career high school coach the Mercury picked, she played in the WNBA, coached in the WNBA (before this past season with the Aces), coached in college and with USA basketball. Not to mention she has coached and trained current and former WNBA players.

Oof. I was most afraid of that G League coach. Sorry. Coaching 3rd rate men as an assistant has almost no value for me. And her experience outside of that was also questionable.

Vanessa is very smart. And a strong woman. She won't be anybody's puppet. That's really a nasty accusation IMO, especially since we really have no idea what happened behind the scenes or who was even interested - regarding the hire.

Takes regarding Phoenix or DT bring out the worst in people.

I agree. Stephanie White and T-Spoon probably make way more money in their current positions. Than the Mercury were willing to pay. Besides, the Aces owner was more than willing to pay Becky Hammon. Can’t say the same for Phoenix.

A four-person panel would interview each finalist: Suns general manager James Jones, senior vice president for people and culture Kim Corbitt, Kozar and Pitman. (The Mercury and Suns are part of the same ownership group.) |
Am I the only person who finds it weird that the Suns GM was part of the interview panel for the Mercury coach? Do they bring Pitman in when the Suns are hiring?
